A bit early, but always a welcome sight to have our first California Pipevine swallowtail 🦋🦋🦋hatch this year. This subspecies (Battus philenor hirsuta) is endemic (only found here) and isolated to Northern California but the species (Battus philenor philenor) which looks virtually identical ranges broadly through the southern US and east coast. While not endangered, this locally-rare butterfly still calls SF county home despite the extensive loss of riparian habitat along brotherhood way and the isolation of its only host plant, California Pipevine. It still grows wild in just a few places left in the city- surviving in a few of the city’s undeveloped parks. Outside of SF County, these butterflies are still quite common in the sierra foothills and all of the way to the coast- anywhere where their host plant has been spared from development and encroachment of invasive plants. If you living within the butterfly’s native range, consider planting California Pipevine for these beauties! Want to know if you might have a shot at creating habitat for these butterflies- check in @inaturalistorg using their map feature to see if observations of them are within a few miles of where you live. Though capable of flying several miles, they love to stay close to their larval lifeline, Pipevine plants.

High five for California Pipevine season! 🤚 🦋 These native butterflies have been hatching over the last few weeks and will feed on nectar, mate, and search for the new growth of California Pipevine plants to lay their eggs on. Hope these guys come back to leave us (and our neighbors growing California Pipevine) some eggs! We are lucky to live right in Brotherhood way, one of the few streets in San Francisco that still has a decent growth of wild California Pipevine growing to support these guys. Wanna help out? Contact your local native plant nursery and plant California Pipevine to support these beauties!

Sound on 🔈
This dinosaur egg looking #CacaoPod was picked fresh this morning at the Waimanalo Cacao Orchard. It’ll be used during our Chocolate Factory Tour today to let people taste chocolate in its purest form. The vast majority of people don’t realize chocolate comes from a fruit! We’re always thrilled when we can share the fresh stuff and see faces perk up when they taste its fruity deliciousness 😁. Have you tasted fresh cacao before? If so what do you think it tastes like?
