🐾 The Whelping Box day 12. Hard to believe but here we are. As I was doing weight checks, neurological stimulation, and scent (leather) introduction today this was the scene.

🐾 Introducing the “Wine Country Litter” of 2023.

Firemark For All The Right Rieslings NH WCX “Ries” x Redtail Little Miss Sure Shot VSWB “Oakley” welcome 11 puppies. Six girls and five boys.

🐾 Boys are Zin, Paso, Brix , Brut, and Champ. Girls are Sherry, Chablis, Sauvi, Rosé, Sonoma, and Napa.

🐾We will be sharing individual pictures from their photo shoot at one week of age.

🐾 The names are for fun and to fit the litter theme. Who knows, the names might be keepers.

🐾 I have it on good authority that one of the girls will become Luna.

🐾 From The Whelping Box day 7. One whole week.

🐾 This is what I saw at the 6:45a wake-up today. Tried to capture the beauty with just the light from the window.

🐾 All puppies are now over one pound. As they grow we are watching for their eyes to begin opening. Once we see that the room will stay darkened—den like—until the puppies have adjusted to light.

🐾 It is day 5 from The Whelping Box. Eight of the 11 puppies are over 1 pound this morning. All still in the green (see post from yesterday)This is their job after all! Eat, sleep and grow. The elimination thing is mom’s job for now.

🐾 Today we will add large stuffed toys to the box to create opportunity for puppies to grow strong muscles and engage their brain to solve the problem of getting to mom with the mountain in the way.

🐾 This also adds problem solving for the breeder’s brain when counting puppies and the last one is always hiding under said “mountain”. 😂

🐾 And today from The Whelping Box nursing continues!!

All puppies are “in the green” (it’s a chart we use to measure any puppy needing extra time at the breast) and gaining nicely. One puppy has reached the 1 pound milestone.

🐾 Eyes and ears are closed, but their little nose is working, working, working.

🐾 Today we offered DIRT for ESI (Early Scent Introduction). It was fun to watch them respond. A few were like “meh, just put me back with mom”. But a couple little noses went “oh wow, what is that divine new smell?”

🐾 You cannot buy collars this small in a store which is why we all start keeping track of our litters with rick rack or ribbon.

🐾 True. Annie Oakley had her temp drop this morning. It’s stage 1 labor.

We went back and rechecked all the numbers to figure out why we had her whelping window between the 12th and 15th. Then called our Therio (Reproduction Vet) and they said, “we have her window as opening TODAY” 😮

🐾 The good news is we already have everything set up for the big day. The better news is my friend and mentor, Mary Livingston, of is on her way over with her Doppler and we are going to listen to puppies heartbeats and try to count. TRY!

🐾 Our “Redtail Little Miss Sure Shot” is about to become a first time mommy. She has passed ALL her clearances with flying colors. She is ready.

🐾 Stay tuned for the revealing of the stud we have carefully selected to produce the most gorgeous puppies on the planet (I may be exaggerating a wee bit but they will be dang cute and super healthy…we guarantee it)

💙Happy birthday! Today you are a whole 2 weeks old. Your eyes are starting to open. I hear you doing more vocalizing probably because your ears are also opening. Yet still relying on your sense of smell to guide you to the all important food source.

🐶Day 10 and mom remains hard at work nursing her puppies. It is a full time job.

🐶 Puppies are growing strong and healthy. It was time to graduate from ribbons to real puppy collars.
