Last week, volunteer trapper Sarah (who also happens to be the person behind this page) became aware of a injured and unwell cat in Chico. I went to scope out the location and see if I could see the cat and I saw him right away. I approached him slowly and eventually was able to lean down and give him some head scritches. I left to go get some trapping supplies (E-Z Nabber Cat Catcher Net, a regular net, a transfer cage, and a regular trap) and returned to the location within 15 minutes. The kitty was still there.
I placed the transfer cage around the corner of the house but near where he was laying. The plan was to scruff the cat and drop him into the transfer cage, but plans don't always go ... to plan, so that's why I brought all the extras. I approached him again, gave him some head scritches, and started to rub the back of his neck. Then, when he relaxed a little, I scruffed him and dropped him into the transfer cage. He was very clearly sick and in pain and had nothing left to fight.
He was seen at PawPrints Spay/Neuter Clinic the next day. His foot was worse than I imagined. It was very infected, necrotic, and the skin was no longer attached. We also ran a triple test on him while he was sedated and sadly, he came up positive for FIV. We made the decision to end his suffering.
That same day, we had another cat with an injured foot that also came up positive for FIV (from a different town entirely), so he too was euthanized.
And then, just as the dust was settling, we discovered a mama cat had given birth in her trap! This has happened only one other time in our history of doing this work, and has never happened at our clinic! After such a sad and heavy day, we were delighted (albeit slightly frustrated) to see a mama give birth and take care of her four little babies.
This work is HARD. We never know what we will encounter day to day, but at the end of the day, preventing suffering and unwanted litters is our mission. But, if a litter magically makes it just under the wire, we're not going to be angry about it. π»
Mama and babies are safely in foster care right now, and mama is doing THE BEST JOB taking care of her littles.
