I have often wondered why our Ranger11r bull is in the BOTTOM 5% of birthweight EPD in the breed, inferring he is a high BW bull. We AI him to every heifer that is not a daughter, and lots of cows as we are wanting to build an extensive Ranger11r genetic base. We use a very accurate scale to weigh calves. We currently have had 8 Ranger calves, with a high of 78 # and a low of 59 # for an average of 70 #. We have never calved ANY Ranger calf over 89 # This is indicative of my experience for 10 years. Because of such experience on not only Ranger, but several bulls and cows alike that I have significant data accumulated, I find it difficult to rely on Braunvieh EPD's for breeding decisions.
As a breed we all need to understand that many of our customers come from a breed that rely heavily on EPD's, AND use ours to make buying decisions. We all need to do what we can to make our EPD's meaningful. Turn in all the data you can, on every animal in your herd. Consider testing your bulls. I believe we ALL want our breed to become successful. It is hard to argue, more documentation of our cattle will not aid in that goal.
