Dogs are den animals in the sense that may seek dens out as a place for safety, sleep or rest. Our house is a den that we also use for safety, sleep and rest. But we also work, exercise, celebrate, laugh, cry, and move from room to room without really leaving our “den”. Dogs need twice as much rest as we do but when they see us moving around the house and they’re following us; they aren’t getting enough rest and then when we actually have to leave the house and they can’t go they can get confused and anxious because they don’t understand why they aren’t going with you. This can unintentionally create separation anxiety. So teach your dog to rest as you move around the house. It’s a very overlooked exercise but also just as important as teaching them to walk well on leash with you. humblek9

Sometimes she’s Juniper who needs to look like Nacho Libre to see the vet and sometimes she’s Juniper who gets dressed up in beads. Either way she’s not a huge fan of getting her ears messed with so the muzzle and the collar both require a certain amount of trust. In this instance it’s not about commands. It’s about time.

You adopted a new dog and you both have this great connection. It appears you both love each other but that doesn’t mean you know each other. So take it slow. Maybe hold off on the coffee shops, dog beaches , parks, play dates, etc and focus on getting to know each other and how their new house operates and where they fit into that. You gotta remember we may never know a rescue dog’s full story but we do know they probably have been moved around quite a bit before they got to you so take it slow. The one in the relationship with the most information is the most responsible. And having a dog in a human led world, that responsibility falls on us. 😊

I believe that teaching your dog to rest inside the home is just as important as teaching your dog to walk well on leash outside of your home. I try not to label dogs “good” or “bad” with other dogs, kids, cats, etc. instead I have my categories as probably, maybe and probably not. When you’re working with rescue dogs who haven’t been adopted yet there are many unknowns. “How does the dog respond to being in a crate?” “How long does it take for the dog to settle down when you’re in the room?” “How about when you’re gone?” And the list goes on and changes from dog to dog. Once we gather the info , we share it with the rescue and we start filling out their “dating profile”. So while the rescue is looking for a foster or adopter who can handle their dog we work on their challenges to not only make it easier for the next person but also to provide guidance along the way. We like to be there for the dog for as much of the process as needed. Thank you to all the rescues who trust us with their dogs. 🙏🏾

Sometimes rules and boundaries are set to enjoy freedoms not necessarily restrict it. And it’s ok to have different rules in different areas. For us, the rule in the house is simple. It’s to rest. “Rest” is such a simple rule for the dogs (and us.) the it completely eliminates any list of no” foe the dogs that we might have.

How a dog acts in one environment is not always how they will act in every environment . Even if something changes in an environment they are comfortable in, the behavior can change. For example, deciding to have a party in your house in an area where your dog is used to sleeping. So before you take your dog somewhere new, or change anything. Have a plan beforehand so you don’t find yourself over correcting your dog . Being aware and having a plan can mean more to your dog than “commands”. You can take your dog to the best trainer in the world and spend thousands on training but if you’re not going to put in the work, it’s not going to work. It’s like hiring a personal trainer and eating like crap and not doing the workouts and complaining to them that you’re “regressing” . Do the work or it won’t work.

More than likely your puppy needs rest, close to 85% of the day. Many behavior problems, and I feel this holds true for humans, are caused by lack of sleep/rest and not lack of exercise. We are our best selves when we are well rested. So when your puppy is awake and needs physical exercise, be intentional with your time. And if you don’t know what do to, “rest” can be your exercise. Sometimes having a reactive dog is a lot like having the same argument with your significant other over and over again. You gotta recognize the pattern before it starts and then break that pattern. The one in the relationship with the most information is the one most responsible so when it comes to you and your dog, that responsibility falls on the human. It’s all about communication and every relationship will have disagreements . So at the end of the day are you seeking to “win” or are you seeking to understand. Difficult conversations are hard to have but if you’re not willing to face them and get through them the pattern just keeps repeating. For every negative reaction your dog is having they are expressing a need that’s not being met and vice versa. The whole process is simple but it’s definitely not easy.

Farrah (lab mix from Outta the Cage) and Tippy ( pittie mix from All For Love Animal Rescue) are ready for their new homes!

Out of these two dogs, one usually gets all the space they need because of he looks and the other one gets no space for the exact time reason. One of these dogs will get asked permission to pet while one just gets touched if they are within arms reach. One of these dogs also gets way more chances to “mess up” than the other. And most people will decide this before ever getting to actually know them. At the end of the day, both of these dogs deserve respect regardless of how you think they will react. People get confused when they seem them walking together. Also, one of these dogs prefers belly rubs while the other prefers circuit training. 😂😂😂 #humblek9

In July of 2023, @blues_babes brought home a 10 week old husky to foster for @istandwithmypack . 7 days later we adopted him. Even though Elvis was retired and settling into his role as couch potato, I wasn’t really looking for a “helper dog” , let alone a husky, but he showed up and he kind of checked all the boxes.
