Today is the day! #apdt2024
Doing a little agility with Poppy this morning and Jojen wanted to play too! 12 years old and he still remembers and loves the game….the cookies don’t hurt either 😊
Weave practice with Poppy using the Pet Tutor remote treat dispenser to help with forward drive and distance!(Its hard to video and activate the machine at the same time LOL) #dogtraining #positivereinforcementdogtraining #cattledogmixesofinstagram #cattledogmix #PetTutor
I love how Poppy plays with Jojen. He is respectful of his size by consistently handicapping himself by lying down. He respects the pauses important in healthy play and listens when Jojen tells him he didn’t like something. The slow motion video shows some really good inhibited mouthing as well as quick tongue flicks and pauses in play. Watching good healthy play is so important to being able to understand dog body language and gives you a better idea of what to watch for when your dog is playing with another dog. #dogbodylanguage #dogplay #cattledogmixesofinstagram #cavalierkingcharlesspaniel
Having coated dogs means I need good grooming tools in my arsenal. My trusty Wahl clippers I’ve had forever started to die so I reached out to our wonderful groomer that takes care of Jojen and Sadie, for her recommendation. Our new clipper came today! I’m so excited to see what it can do to help me tackle the mats that Maverick has accumulated 🤦♀️ Thanks @snailshellgrooming #wahlanimal
We got our restock of Bocces today! Even Maverick loves their treats! #boccesbakery
It’s been a while but I finally got the scratch board out for our second session. His whole demeanor was different this time, even though it’s been weeks since I first introduced it.
I started by letting him eat treats out of it a few times (not shown here) then started the session. He was much less worried and more persistent than last time! He’s so fun to work with! #positivereinforcementdogtraining #animalbehavior #positivereinforcement #cattledogmix #cooperativecare
I finally got out the nail board to work with Poppy. This is the first 20 seconds and last 26 seconds. In between was about 7 minutes of staring at me and circling the board.
This video demonstrates a couple things; 1) Poppy’s sensitivity 2) his resiliency 3) the cool new way to have your dog file their own nails.
In the first 20 seconds you see his immediate interest and correct skill, however you also see his recoil when I shut the treat drawer too fast, for the next almost 7 minutes he was working through that. Also, I was given an opportunity to modify my behavior in shutting the drawer less quickly to avoid that reaction. By the end you can see he re-engages with the board but is still hesitant to get the treat. His resiliency helped him push through AND I made sure to make it safe for him. That builds his confidence in working with new things and his trust in me as his partner in learning.
I ended on a success and put the board away, hoping to access some latent learning so when I bring it out again he is more comfortable engaging. #cooperativecare #positivereinforcementdogtraining #cattledogmix
Playing agility this weekend with Poppy! Had some great runs and some runs that show us where we need work 😜
