Let’s feed Sapphire! 🐢 This month marks Sapphire’s 10 year anniversary at the Living Coast! As a non-releasable resident, she requires specialized care 24/7 365. This year in honor of #SanDiegoGives we are raising funds to support Sapphire and her fellow neighbors in the Shark & Ray Experience. Learn more at the link in bio!
Meet Sapphire, the Living Coast’s loggerhead sea turtle, who has overcome incredible challenges!🐢
She’s big, beautiful, and oddly buoyant. Sapphire is often found in a sort of turtle-headstand position due to her buoyancy challenges. Her buoyancy imbalance had to be corrected by gluing marine weights to her rear shell, allowing her the ability to surface and dive down at her leisure. Thanks to your support, she’s now 26 years old and thriving in our Shark & Ray Experience.
Your generosity during San Diego Gives will help us continue providing exceptional care for Sapphire and all animal ambassadors at Living Coast. Dive in and make an impact, link in bio!

Do you #KnowYourCoast? Meet the light-footed Ridgway’s rail. (Rallus obsoletus levipe)
The #lightfootedridgwaysrail, an endangered bird species, is exclusively found in Southern California and northern Baja California, Mexico. The presence of the Ridgway’s rail is not just a sign of a healthy tidal salt marsh ecosystem, but also a crucial part of it. This hen-sized, long-legged marsh bird nests in coastal salt marshes and relies on shallow water and mudflats for foraging.
The rail, a victim of habitat loss due to coastal development, is now benefiting from recent conservation efforts.
The Living Coast is a part of Team Clapper Rail, an alliance working towards rail conservation through various measures, including zoological propagation, field research, and re-introduction into the wild.
Do you #KnowYourCoast? Meet the green sea turtle 🐢 (Chelonia midas)
Did you know that Southern California’s coast is a favorite hangout for both juvenile and adult green turtles? They travel all the way from their nesting beaches in Mexico to enjoy our bountiful coastal ecosystems! These ecosystems are loaded with their favorite foods, like seagrass, algae, and invertebrates.
As keystone species, green sea turtles hold a pivotal role in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. They’re akin to the VIP guests of the environment, influencing other species around. What’s genuinely awe-inspiring is their unwavering dedication to maintaining the health of the world’s oceans, a responsibility they’ve shouldered for an astounding 100 million years!
Visit the Living Coast to meet Emerald, a non-releasable Atlantic green sea turtle!
Do you #KnowYourCoast? #SharkWeekEdition 🦈 Meet the leopard shark. (Triakis semifasciata)
They are some of the most common sharks found along the coast of California. Named for their appearance, Leopard sharks arrive in San Diego in massive numbers during warm summer months and have been observed to be primarily pregnant females!
While here, they enjoy the warm, shallow, protected waters of the Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve in La Jolla. If you’ve visited La Jolla Shores, chances are you’ve swam with one of these sharks, whether you like it or not! They can be seen right off the coast in water that’s not much higher than your waist.
These sharks are adapted to living near the ocean floor due to their lack of a swim bladder, an organ fish use for buoyancy. They compensate for this by storing oil in their livers, making them slightly less buoyant than the surrounding water, causing them to sink when not swimming.
Visit the Living Coast to catch an up-close view of the leopard sharks in the Shark & Ray Experience!
