Keeping theses fatties warm
Putting the Bigs to bed
One way goats can keep themselves warm
Goats and other ruminants (cows and sheep) have an special chamber in their digestive system called the rumen. The rumen is a kind of stomach, but instead of being filled with acid to break down food, the rumen is teeming with specialized bacteria that break down food into forms of energy and nutrients that the goats’ bodies can use. A normal by-product of the work of the bacteria is heat. So inside each well-fed goat is a little furnace emitting steady heat. Goats need fuel for the rumen, like we would need food for a wood stove.
For our goats at GNR this means grass hay and species specific feed twice daily for our small herd and once for the large herd.

Interesting Goat Fact Did you know goats normally suck in their water but they can also lap it up if they choose BUT they can not vomit. This is baby Waylon. He was born to a very senior momma. Since birth, he has a breathing issue but the vet has NOT been able to diagnose cause. His twin was not born living. At this point he is healthy and doing well as is his momma. They are enjoying their new lives and friends here at GNR. #goats
