We always get SOOO PROUD when we get pics and videos like this, letting us know the breeding program we have really does create some incredible, naturally instinctive field dogs!!
Here is RIP, 7 months old and already in the field! He is from our Holly SH x Duke litter this past Feb and is completely owner trained!!
Rika Koeshall you’re doing wonderful with him! We’re so glad he’s with y’all!

When your dogs are trying to cast spells against you so they can get double feedings and sleep inside….. but they misread the ingredients in the witch’s spell book and instead of an eye of newt, they throw in a whole salamander!!!!!….. 😬😬😬😏😏😏🤣🤣🤣
Matt Breding what have you been teaching this girl!?!

We rotate between communal feedings and individual feedings for the young pups just until about the 6 month range then they’re completely individually kenneled and trained until tie out, and eventually honoring is being taught…. Teaching them to respect and tolerate each other is a critical part of the socialization process.
Regardless of what they’re doing though, obedience and patience are incorporated into every aspect of daily life….. getting these young pups to be steady as a group helps the transition to honoring, and working around multiple dogs later on, tremendously! Having the dogs “work” for their meal (ie listen, be patient and steady, and ultimately obedient and follow commands) correlates later on to working for their rewards in training!
These little guys start their formal retrieving work in just short time ….. it’s teething time right now lol

When we say our pups are naturals, we mean it! This is Alpine, on of our SH Holly’s pups from this year….5 months and just look at that marking….. keyed in on gunshot, and watching the bird the entire arch all the way to the ground! Quick, driven retrieve, with a nice delivery to hand! It’s everything we love to see in a young pup like this!
Alpine is owned by John W Bouvette and we are stoked to get him ready for that guide dog life!!

Honor drills and obedience this week at the Kennel
Grounds!! Our girl Holly and a client pup, Sage, are on the stage here in this video!
We strive for steadiness above all else here at PPGD, and part of that is being patient! Patience for a dog is taught, without a doubt. One of the ways we accomplish that is to pair a younger/intermediate level pup with an advanced level pup and we do alternating marks, depending on the behavior of the pups! Movement or anxiety gets a denial, good conduct gets a retrieve! We also try and take our time when we do this, the longer the session the more you’re building patience. This is just a small excerpt but this session was about 30 min of placeboard time, with maybe 5 minutes of marking and retrieves!!
Few different things to note from the video…. Younger dogs are tethered to the stand to ensure they aren’t allowed a retrieve should they break, this also allows us to be hands free and creates a new mindset for the pup teaching that we (the handler) still have control even without us touching them. We also found that the shock from the stand following them if they break (still clipped to the pup lol), followed by a stern “no”, DRASTICALLY deters the behavior from recurring…. It stopped breaking instantly in more than one dog we’ve worked with. Additionally, the honor dog is always rewarded for good behavior, we give praise and a few pieces of kibble during training, who doesn’t like a snack! (We understand some don’t use food, and that’s perfectly fine, we do lol) Lastly, the retrieve was delivered directly to hand… our older dogs will place then release, the younger ones we just want to deliver to hand either way! We also end the retrieve by insisting on place, it’s important the pup learns the reset is important as well, not just coming back to the handler!
Pups are also required to sit and remain at place while I go reset launchers halfway through, putting me about 75 yds away, ad
Not even 5 months, marking to gunshot off the launcher….. that’s what a good quality breeding program gets you!
This is Koda, one of our March 15 litter pups from SH Holly x Duke. Koda is owned by @robert rose and will be with us throughout his started dog program ! We can’t wait to see what he turns into!!

So we have been working AVIDLY to make this delivery to hand happen for this little pup…… we’ve done a couple months of hold conditioning in various degrees and approaches, mastered walking hold, and she loves the birds, just couldn’t seem to put two and two together…… well today, Kya went 3/3 on marks on the launcher during her FIRST introduction to it, and made absolute perfect deliveries to hand……. I know this seems like normal business for a retriever but those of you who I’ve talked with about her know we were trying every approach in our arsenal, and we were SUCCESSFUL! NOW we can start the fun stuff and get her into some scenarios and advance those hunting skills!! Well done Kya!
Excuse the videoing lol. After the first two retrieves I was so excited I finally realized I should video, and didn’t even start till after the mark 🤣🤣🤣. One day I’ll get my act together!

“Sophie” is up for discussion!! SH Holly X Duke litter! Incredibly sharp and biddable, health guarantee.

Ms. Kimber just doing some searching through cover, and working on recall on command, as well as proximity to the hunter, she also worked on some hold conditioning and walking hold with cold game today too! She’s not quite where we want in order to start some formal retriever training but definitely improving every session! We went from running away and dropping everything to now having a controlled walking hold , before long it’ll be a solid delivery to hand!

Ms Rue finally retrieving bumpers and delivering to hand like a champ….. hold conditioning for the win!!!
Now the real work begins!! Placeboard work and structured retrieves can begin now that we have her excited for the retrieve, and now that she understands we’re asking her to retrieve, bring it back, and hold until released. That foundation and understand is a MUST before any formal retrieving can truly begin.

Todays session was about extending marking distance! The Junior dogs moved to our front field and we did some confidence building marks out to 120 yds!
The concept here is to teach the dogs to not hang up on cover or distractions on the way to their mark. The method used is what I call “stacking marks”. Basically throwing additional marks on top of the first to continue keeping their focus and confidence on the original mark location. Usually we will throw a mark once the dog reaches the halfway point regardless of whether they’re still locked on or not. I’m just this one session we saw Gus go from locking up at cover barriers to blasting through them, and decoy spreads, and old falls headed straight to his marks.
Mr Gus was on top of it today and we got to see some afterburners on him that were impressive to say the least! This guy lovessss to work!!!
Keith Schwandt, you’ve got a race car on your hands!!

Drake working on some marking and opening that distance up beyond the decoy spreads.
We were out to 100-120 yds in this session. Junior dogs doing very well!

And just like that, we have a retriever!!!!!
Little Rue making us PROUD today…… we’d been struggling big time to find that retrieve desire and gone through all the play books….. decided a few weeks of hold conditioning was needed, ran her through numerous sessions…. And today, we did cold game pigeons and the light switch turned on!!! It was hard not to jump and shout we were so excited! Good job Rue, now the work begins!!!
