National Pet Hydration Awareness Month
Stay cool, stay hydrated! π§πΎ
July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month, reminding us to keep our furry friends refreshed and revitalized during the summer heat to help prevent dehydration and/or heatstroke. Remember to provide fresh water and shade, especially during outdoor adventures. Let's keep those tails wagging and tongues lapping with plenty of H2O!
Please share to help spread awareness!

Is your pet on year round heartworm prevention?? π¦ Fun Fact: Here in Maryland, the temperature never drops below freezing long enough to kill off our mosquito population! π₯Ά #heartwormprevention #heartwormawareness #petwellness #cutestever

Ultrasound or ultrasonography is an incredible diagnostic tool that has gained deserved popularity in veterinary medicine in recent years. It can help detect and diagnose a number of issues and conditions that arenβt readily apparent on radiographs or blood work alone.

A transducer, often called a probe, produces high-frequency sound waves. We use the probe with a conductive substance called ultrasound gel to help eliminate air pockets between the probe and the skin to allow the sound waves to travel directly to the organs of interest. This produces 2-dimensional images on a monitor in βreal-timeβ and allows us to see the structure, movement, and blood flow of the organs. We save the images and videos to submit to a veterinary radiologist or internist for interpretation and receive a detailed report. Your veterinarian will then follow up and discuss the results with you to come up with a plan.
Here you see Dash, who is a little nervous but very cute, demonstrating how we perform abdominal ultrasounds. We use a V-shaped trough which encourages pets to lay on their backs comfortably for us to acquire the appropriate images. At times, pets may be too wiggly, tense, or painful with probe palpation, so we may need to use a injectable sedative to help relax them for us to obtain the appropriate images. Your pet does need to be fasted for at least 8-12 hours for accurate abdominal imaging and may need to be shaved for best contact with the probe.
