CANTER Chicago is your trusted resource for retiring racehorses in the greater Chicago area. This service is provided free to racing trainers and owners.

Through our website and social media channels, CANTER Chicago provides the means for the public to view retiring racehorses that are located at Hawthorne Race Course and Arlington Park. CANTER is a volunteer-run organization, with all donations directly benefiting the horses. CANTER Chicago volunteers are OTTB advocates. We believe in the tremendous heart, versatility, spirit and athleticism of th

oroughbreds. We work closely with the Chicago-area racing and equestrian communities to promote the responsible retirement, retraining, rehabilitation and rehoming of these beautiful animals. We believe – and work towards – finding a home for every horse. We love seeing CANTER alumni excelling in new careers such as jumping, eventing, cross country, polo, dressage and pleasure riding. REHOMING NEWS:

Two more retiring racehorses are in their OTTB-era!

Z U Soon has been rehomed and now lives in MN. That’s him enjoying the good life with a buddy on a beautiful fall day.

Be Lucky has also been rehomed. What made this rehoming extra special is his new owner has another OTTB from the same racing connections that we had previously listed.

Wishing these horses and their new families nothing but the best in their adventures to come.

REHOMING NEWS:

We have an unbelievable, heart-warming, relief-inducing update to share.

Tale of the Nile raced 81 times. He’s been listed on our website since July, and we know full well how hard it is to find a great home for a horse that has some age and that number of starts.

Yesterday we learned that Tale of the Nile has found his forever home with a local equestrian who has experience in both racing and racehorse aftercare.

His new barn name is Moose and he has a beautiful home, a loving family and an OTTB sibling.

We are over the 🌙 at this outcome for this ultimate warhorse.

TB racing in Chicago is done for 2024, so some trainers are flexible on pricing to get retiring horses moved into excellent off track homes quickly.

This unbelievable animal raced 81 times.

You read that right. 81 times!

While he’s already been retired from racing since June 2023, he’s living at the racetrack.

He’d give anything for turnout and a family of his own.

Featured Power has been sold! She left the track yesterday. We are so happy for everyone involved - the seller (racing owner) feels really good about the match.

Our volunteers fell in love with this sweet little kitten on the Hawthorne Race Course backside. If anyone knows who owns this kitty and if they are looking to find it a home, let us know. And yes, we took horse listings today too. More on that in another post later 😁

While 99.9% of the horses we help rehome are on-track racehorses still owned by their racing connections, there are a few exceptions, such as “Skippy.” Skippy is a CANTER Chicago-owned horse that has been in our rehab and retraining program for the last 6+ months. While he’s still a green bean by all accounts, his brain and willingness to please make him a rare and wonderful sport horse prospect.
