Good morning!!!! I see we have a lot of new followers. I'll introduce myself and tell you a bit about Wiki Worms. My name is Courtney 😀 and I started Vermicomposting/Worm Composting/Worm farming a few years ago. I have a 8'x32' garden that I had been trying to work with for years. I had added topsoil, tilled, added cow manure and had done many other things to try to turn our horrible Cincinnati clay soil into something workable. One day I just googled something like "how do I make the soil better in my garden?' and worm castings came up as an answer. So I started googling that. When I found out how much it was going to be to order a large amount I thought what if I can make them myself? And that's when I got into actual worm farming. Since then I have added at least 100 lbs to my garden and it is flourishing. I no longer have any issues with the compacted clay or drainage or water retention. My garden pretty much takes care of itself. After seeing the results of my outdoor garden I wanted to try indoor plants which is something I've never done before. And now I have a crazy amount. I'll post a picture below. I love propagating new plants from my old plants. You'll see those posted for sale also. Anyway after I was content with my plans being where they need to be I realized that there was a demand for worm casting in the area. Especially with the indoor plant enthusiasts. So since I didn't need them any more for myself I decided to start selling them per pound. I found that my castings were a much better quality than those on the store shelves. The fact that they're fresh makes all the difference! I've been told dozens of times how my castings have improved people's plants even though they have been using store-bought casting for years and never saw any improvement. They just used it because they we're told they were good for the plants. So now that I'm somewhat established with the indoor plants enthusiasts I'm trying to blanch out to other people locally. Not only to sell castings but to educate on what they are and to educate people on worm farming itself. It's actually not as hard as you think it is. I promise! It's my goal to one day have a space of my own for Wiki Worms to house the farms, the sifters, employees and to hold workshops/classes. If you made it through all that I thank you very much for being here and for taking the time out of your day to read my introduction. If you could share my small business that would be great it will help me towards my goal. Also if you have bought for me and would like to leave a review that would be great! Feel free leave any comments concerns or questions!

What are Worm Castings?

Vermicompost, also known as worm castings, is a nutrient-rich natural fertilizer produced by earthworms as they break down organic matter. Here are some of the key nutrients found in vermicompost:

Macronutrients
1.Nitrogen (N): 1.5-3.5% - essential for plant growth, leaf development, and protein synthesis.
2.Phosphorus (P): 1-3% - crucial for root development, flower and fruit formation, and energy transfer.
3. Potassium (K): 1-2% - important for overall plant health, resistance to disease, and water balance.

Micronutrients
1. Calcium (Ca): 1-5% - essential for cell wall development, root growth, and nutrient uptake.
2. Magnesium (Mg): 0.5-1.5% - crucial for photosynthesis, cell wall development, and nutrient uptake.
3.Sulfur (S): 0.5-1.5% - important for protein synthesis, plant defense, and nutrient uptake.
4. Iron (Fe): 0.5-1.5% - essential for chlorophyll production, photosynthesis, and plant growth.
5. Zinc (Zn): 0.05-0.15% - crucial for plant growth regulation, protein synthesis, and disease resistance.
6. Copper (Cu): 0.05-0.15% - important for plant defense, enzyme activity, and nutrient uptake.
7. Boron (B): 0.05-0.15% - essential for cell wall development, plant growth regulation, and nutrient uptake.
8. Manganese (Mn): 0.05-0.15% - crucial for photosynthesis, enzyme activity, and nutrient uptake.

Other Beneficial Compounds
1. Hormones: Vermicompost contains plant growth hormones like auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins.
2. Microorganisms: Vermicompost is rich in beneficial microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes.
3. Humic Acids: Vermicompost contains humic acids, which help improve soil structure, fertility, and water-holding capacity.

Vermicompost's nutrient profile can vary depending on factors like feedstock, worm species, and processing conditions. However, it is generally considered a rich and balanced fertilizer for plants.

If you're like me you've heard about worm farming/worm castings/Vemicomposting and you want to learn all you can about it. YouTube is a great place to start. There's several people I follow. I'll put links to some of their videos on the page. If there's anything specific you're looking for let me know.

I know it can be confusing because we've gone through a few different packaging changes. This is our current packaging. It has air holes punched in at the top and a moist folded paper towel on top of the castings in the bag. If you're not going to use them within a few days it's recommended you just leave the bag open to air and remoisten (is that a word?🤣) the folded paper towel when dry. Air and water are really important to keep the microb levels high which is the main benefit to castings.nif you're not going to use them till spring place them in the garage and forget them. Then about 2 weeks before using open it up and wet the paper towel. The microbes will come back! 🦠
