Mt. Healthy Hatcheries

Mt. Healthy Hatcheries A family owned and operated poultry hatchery since 1924! We have over 50 varieties of chickens, ducks Mt. From those humble beginnings, Mt.

Healthy Hatcheries is a third generation family owned and operated poultry business. The hatchery was started in the mid 1920's by Hugh "Chick" O'Hara (a local pipe fitter) who started out by hatching just a few chicks in his basement for friends and neighbors. Healthy Hatcheries has grown to produce over 4 million chicks, ducks and game birds annually. Our success has been achieved through a comb

ination of good old fashioned hard work, attention to detail and the use of the newest hatching technologies.

It's a common question that sometimes comes with a little pushback, but we stand by our recommendation to use a heat lamp in your brooder. We recognize that people worry about safety issues but done properly and using the right equipment, you can safely use heat lamps. We also understand the inclination to keep your babies warm in a natural way, something that mimics a mother hen's heat.
But despite these arguments and because our number one reason for babies not thriving is because they were not warm enough, we still think a heat lamp is your best option to keep those babies happy at all times.
And no matter what heating option you choose....make sure you are using a thermometer that is placed away from the heat source so you know you are getting an accurate reading.
We welcome your comments and experiences, so please share away!

It's that time of year again! The hot weather has arrived my friends and it is important to know what to look for when your chickens are overheated and how to keep them CALM, COOL AND COLL"EGG"TED in the rising temps.

If you would like to share your ideas here, or if you are a newbie and have questions....this is a safe place! I have attached an informative article provided by Homestead and Chill that I think you will find useful!

WE HAVE EGGCITING NEWS!!

Our very own Danielle O'Hara is going to start hosting a podcast about everything chickens!! It will be called "Chicken Chat, Cluckin' Good Conversation!" Danielle is 4th generation in our family owned business and has worked at the hatchery for several years, and yes, she is a chicken tender herself!
For her first program content, we are asking that you drop any and all questions about poultry or Mt. Healthy Hatcheries here in the comments where she will pick them up and answer them on her first show!

We are open to any and all other ideas for show topics as well!

Thank you for your input and we hope you are as "eggcited" as we are to get Chicken Chat going! More details to follow soon. :)

Let's talk Marans egg color variations! There is a wide variety of colors that are actually narrowed down to 9 color depths to help people choose what their goal is.
For our birds, the Noir and Cuckoo lay more eggs so their color is a little lighter. Our Black and Blue Copper Marans lay less, so their egg color is darker and richer.
Things to note, your Marans will lay her darkest eggs in the first sixth months. On average a Marans will start laying at about 32 weeks and lay between 150 - 200 eggs per year, (3 - 4) a week.
We know that those chocolate eggs are highly sought after and we'd like to hear about yours and see some pictures! , ,

When I'm handing out pick up orders, I frequently get questions....especially from first time chicken tenders. I like to put those questions out here because I think we have a kind and helpful group. Recently, chicken grit has been a popular one! Here is a little bit of info that I put together but I would love input here from our experienced flock owners! What have you tried? What works best and what doesn't. Anything you would tell newbies to avoid doing when it comes to grit? We thank you and so do those new flock owners! ,

I found this post by Gwendolyn Mayfield extremely informative and useful. For me personally, since I have a severe egg allergy (ironic, right?), the idea of trying a duck egg instead is intriguing!

I did meet a customer last year who bakes a lot and she said she will never go back to chicken eggs!

What say you?

Duck Eggs V’s Chicken Eggs

- Duck eggs are larger in size than chicken eggs. The whites in chicken eggs have a higher water content (more runny) than the whites in duck eggs. Duck eggs have larger yolks and a higher yolk-to-white-ratio than chicken eggs.

- Duck eggs are GREAT for baking.
- Chicken eggs have thinner shells.
- Duck eggs are larger and richer than eggs
- Chickens are prolific layers year around if taken care of correctly but ducks are as well with much less light necessity.
- Duck eggs stay fresh longer because of their insanely thick shell.
- Duck eggs contain 30% more protein, and a different type of protein that chicken eggs so if allergic to chicken eggs, most can eat duck and visa versa.
- Ounce for ounce, duck eggs contain more Omega-3, Vitamins A and D, fatty acids, choline, folate, and iron than chicken eggs.
- Chickens lay well for about 1-2 years then dramatically start slowing down production while ducks lay a solid 4-5 years before they slow down.
- Chicken eggs come in a lot more colors. -

For the second year in a row (and hopefully many more to come) we have partnered with Tikkun Farm in Mt. Healthy to support their chicks in the classroom program! We donate day old baby chicks (and this year guineas) and they take them into Mt. Healthy schools to teach children how to care for and raise them! Once the schools are done with the chicks, Tikkun takes them back to the farm to live.
I encourage you to check out their website at www.tikkunfarm.com - they have a lot of great things going on!
