November is Senior Pet Month

Despite giving them everything and doing our best for them, age catches up to everyone. Elder pets have given so much love in their lives already and can need some extra care to keep 'em going.
There are somethings to watch out for as your pet ages, namely bad teeth and obesity.
It is time to enjoy the best things in life! Food is nice, but should be managed, but it's time with YOU that is best for older pets.

HAPPY WOLFENOOT! (or Thanksgiving)

Whether you are gathering around the table expressing and appreciating all the humans and things you have in your life, don't forget to give thanks to the furry companions that remind us every day to be grateful for the trivial pleasures, like a sunny spot on the floor, or smelling fingers that recently touched pepperoni.

Enjoy your roast meat and moon desserts, give thanks for what we have and what for you don't want, give thanks for starry eyes that make sure we get out of bed each day, and give thanks for the goofy goobers that make everyday an adventure!

Have no fear though, the animals in our care enjoy hearty Thanksgiving with gravy, green beans, and potatoes!
Give Thanks!

November 7th is Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day

Lymphoma is one of the most common canine cancers, accounting for 7-24% of all canine tumors and 85% of all blood-based tumors. In dogs, lymphoma actually refers to a group of approximately 30 different cancers that originate in the lymphocytes – a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection and is found throughout the body but especially in organs that support the functioning of the immune system such as the spleen, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. Consequently, lymphoma tends to target those areas, although it can affect any organ in the body.

Early detection and treatment are both important to ensure a successful outcome. If canine lymphoma is suspected, let your veterinarian know about your dog’s health history, including any symptoms you have seen. The more detail you are able to provide, the more effective the veterinarian can be in diagnosing this disease.

November is Peanut Butter Lovers Month!

can be a great and enjoyable treat for your dog, but some peanut butters contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is toxic for dogs even in small amounts. It's important to ALWAYS CHECK the ingredients on the labels--the fewer ingredients the better.
Peanut butter can be a great high-value reward for training like recalling your dogs back to you. Or keep them busy by licking it out of a KONG either at room temperature or even frozen! Moderation is key.

But it's also important to note that peanut butter may not be suitable dogs with kidney problems because of salt content, overweight, diabetic, or on special diets.

DID YOU KNOW:
We offer Daycare services Mon-Fri 7am-5:30p!
Only $21 a day, we have special offers when you join our Fit Club paying for 10 days of daycare.
Daycare is a great way to get your dog out and exercise throughout the day and to socialize with other dogs in a supervised area! It helps anxious dogs stay calm throughout the day and helps energetic dogs sleep well at night!

From bubbles and ball games to cuddles and tug-of-war, fun abounds every day!
We take breaks for nap times and snacks sent from home or frozen treats (just +$1/day) that way we have quiet time to decompress so we can get back to playing before going home!

Daycare is for dogs who are up-to-date on Rabies, Distemper, Parvo, K9 flu, and Kennel Cough and are on a routine flea/tick/heartworm prevention. It's important to remember that sending your dog to daycare or boarding is like sending a kid to school or summer camp, sometimes our little ones can get too excited, play too hard, hurt themselves or others, or even pick up the sniffles. Our staff is great at keeping dogs engaged and cordial and updating parents at pickup about behaviors they noticed throughout the day.

HAPPY NATIONAL PIT BULL AWARENESS DAY!
🐶🌟BREED HIGHLIGHT🌟🐶
PIT BULL
Today is a day to appreciate those goofy-goobers in your life, that love unconditionally, and have the biggest smiles!
Pit Bulls are the most racially-profiled and discriminated breeds in the world, having been banned or restricted from over 500 cities, airlines, and even entire countries like the UK and New Zealand.
Known as "America's Dog", the Pit Bull was originally bred by crossing bulldogs with various terriers in the early 19th century in the British Isles to develop a strong, aggressive fighting dog, literally putting them in pits to breed and fight, hence the name Pit Bull. However, if raised around humans in a structure they were considered "Nanny Dogs" being left to watch children as babysitters while parents took the night off. When raised by gentle owners, they were incredibly gentle and caring but could also withstand a punch from a toddler without holding a grudge. Despite many coming from horrifically abusive backgrounds, they are incredibly empathetic animals who can learn to trust and protect new people.
With a large head due to very defined temporalis muscles giving them amazing jaw strength, and a strong rotund body, these are hardy dogs that need routine structure, compassion, and space to burn off a lot of energy. They do require consistent training and handling to ensure they do not become too overly-protective and guarding certain humans, other dogs, or even items from others.
Pit Bulls are a true testament that when you put love and kindness into the world, you get it back 10x fold.

OCTOBER IS ADOPT A SHELTER PET MONTH!

Let's talk about the difference between "kill" and "no-kill" shelters real quick. Any shelter or rescue can be labeled a "kill shelter" if they have less than 90% positive outcomes for animals who enter -- meaning adoption, or transfer to another facility -- that doesn't mean that "no-kill shelters" do not have to make the choice to euthanize animals. It is local government facilities that are often cursed with the label of "kill shelter" due to contracts not to refuse animals found in their jurisidiction, as roaming packs of feral dogs pose a serious public health risk. Unfortunately, such facilities are often underfunded and understaffed making it extremely challenging to ensure every animal gets all the attention they need, medically, socially, or mentally.
BUT YOU CAN HELP!!!
If you are considering welcoming a new pet into your home in the future, one way you can make sure you are finding a pet who is a good match for you and ensure welcoming a new pet is something your life can handle, TRY !

Fostering pets is a great way to keep animals out of the stressful environment of a shelter, and helps them start to accomate to home life. An easy way to get started (especially with cats) is housing them in one room -- like a bathroom with an easily cleaned floor in case of mishaps. And once they are post-2-weeks vaccinated they should be ready to socialize with other animals and going out and exploring the world. It's a great way for kids in the house experience the excitement of having pets and understand the responsibility of vaccines, clean spaces, and plenty of things to do!

OCTOBER 11 is National Pet Obesity Awareness Day!

Obesity, a rampant problem in pets, stresses your pet's joints and overall health. But you can help them! Start keeping data by weighing your dog every month and keep in mind to:
- Measure their food accurately, It can be so easy to over feed pets when not paying attention to recommended serving sizes. But using a cheap measuring cup can keep their servings consistent and healthy.
- Maintain an exercise routine for your pet, increase the length of time and engaging in more vigirous activities
- Limiting treats! Treats are just that, a treat! You can always establish lower value rewards (like a peice of kibble for sit) and higher value rewards (like a special jerky treat for a recall) Keep in mind

These can be easy ways to keep your pet's weight (and even your own) in check! Always consult your vet about serving sizes and feeding the proper food to ward off common ailments. Keep in mind any allergies to which your pet may be sensitive.

Mint and Catnip are derived from the same plant. Catnip can have mild pleasurable affects on cats, and can help repeal insects and help reduce negative behaviors in cats.

OCTOBER 3 is the start of ANIMAL WELFARE WEEK

Welfare goes beyond giving an animal food, water, space and shelter. Welfare also means staying mentally and physically stimulated. Pets need to meet physical needs -- like running around, scratching, chewing, digging -- and mental needs -- social groups like daycares or parks, cuddling or playing fetch, sniffing and exploring.
Being a proactive pet owner means making sure you are taking care of your animals physically and psychologically.

SEPTEMBER 28 is WORLD DAY

IT IS CRITICAL TO REPORT ANY BITES FROM BATS OR RACOONS! 513-352-2922

Rabies is the #1 killer of all zoonotic diseases, with a 99.99% fatality rate, in recorded human history only 29 humans have survived the disease, however survival sometimes comes with vegetative results. The terror of all species that come in contact with mammals, this prion virus affects the central nervous system, causing the body to be repulsed by water, overheat, and (at least in animals) seek to spread the virus through saliva, typically through sporadic aggression.

Current society has been able to keep the virus at bay by vigorous and regulated vaccination of domestic pets! It's important to get your pets vaccinated for rabies, especially if strays live in your area, so they do not contact the virus and carry it to your family!
Keep a folder with your pet's medical information and make sure they are up to date on their rabies vaccine.

Give us a call at 513-474-8381 to schedule your pet's annual, or email [email protected]!

09/24/2023

The last week of September is DEAF DOG AWARENESS WEEK!

Deafness can creep up on aging dogs, or be there from the start as a result of genetics. Some breeds can be predisposed to deafness, but can also be a random genetic mutation especially in atypical coats white and merle.
A deaf animal can be a challenge particularly if it's a gradual process. They may stop responding to their name or verbal cues or only reacting to loud noises.

But there are ways you can be proactive for pets who are hearing impaired or aging quickly. Working some of these into your daily routines can help you communicate with your pet effectively:
- Associate verbal cues with hand signals. This can also help you communicate with your pet from far away. Cues like: Sit, down, come, and stay are common and can be easily established when paired with a small reward.
- Using lights. Much like telling kids to come home from playing at night, you can associate turning on a porch light with coming in and getting breakfast or dinner.
- Keeping a routine. While pets can't read a clock, they will remind you when a meal is late -- just keep daylights savings in mind. If you routinely provide meals, treats, or activities at certain times in your day, you can keep your pet comfortable in your life even if their senses fail.

SEPTEMBER 17-23 is Deaf Dog Awareness Week!
Dogs can be deaf due to being born that way or losing their hearing over time. It can always present challenges when working with and training your dog. A way to prevent miscommunication between you and your pet, whether deaf already or not, can be incorporating hand gestures into your training -- having consist hand gestures when you ask for a behavior can help your dog know what you are saying even if their hearing fades.

🌟BREED HIGHLIGHT🌟
🐶DOODLE🐶
The dog that started the Designer Dog craze!
Doodles blend low-shedding Poodles and the docility of Labrador Retrievers (Or literally ANY OTHER BREED) to make an irresistibly cute and intelligent pooch. It's important to note that no animal is 100% free of allergens, but due to their low shedding Doodles are very popular for this reason. Living with an intelligent dog is like living with a 24/7 con artist. It's important to treat any challenge as a training opportunity -- making sure they recall to you directly (from anywhere), and are ok with someone touching their body and feet can help focus all that energy in the right direction. It's important to have a grooming plan or groomer in mind when you adopt.
And just as important to practice and train for good manners (like not jumping, sitting, making eye contact, going to a station or playing with a toy). They thrive on reinforcing good behaviors you want to see from them, and ignoring bad ones (punishment can validate bad behaviors). These masterminds will con a treat out of you.
