Know the difference between canker and thrush to get the right treatment. 🐴

This is CANKER- not Thrush

This is Heath with Four Oaks. Be sure to know how to spot the difference between the Canker and Thrush. It's important.

Here is the gist. Canker is a Growth. When you first see it, it is typically a white growth that looks and feels like cottage cheese. The growth will come out of the sulcus or the clefts, or both. Here in this photo, it is growing out of the open sulcus (the heel cracks we are always talking about) and it is overtaking the frog.

NOTE: This customer had already been using No Thrush prior to this photo, thinking she was dealing with thrush, which is why the growth has become black and necrotic-looking. More on this below. I will try to remember to add a couple of additional posts with some examples of what canker looks like when just discovered / diagnosed.

While canker is FAR more rare than thrush, it is important to know the difference. Too many times (such as with the photo in this post) I get calls from people who are using No Thrush on what they suspect is thrush, and complaining to me that the results are not as we claim. Treating canker is a completely different protocol when using No Thrush® versus the typical thrush treatment.

We have successfully used NT on dozens of canker cases, but I'll be honest, it is not an easy fix. It takes several / many months, and most horses wind up being lifers on the product to keep the canker from returning. Of course the alternative is a very invasive surgery.
