Bernard Gene Haake
February 17, 1932 to December 30th, 2020
We Love You
Bernard was the founder and creator of Skunkie Acres, Inc, an Educational 501(c)(3) not for profit Animal Park ,No Kill Animal Rescue , and Wildlife Rehab in Citra, Florida.
As a young man he spent his summers driving a concrete truck in Joliet, Illinois for Newkirk's Concrete Company,
Newkirk's would call for Bernie when the excavations were too close because he was the only driver that would do it.
In the winter months he would pick up the milk cans from the dairy farms and deliver them to the warehouse and when finished would drive a fuel truck and deliver home heating oil ..
He worked in construction, becoming a foreman and eventually started his own construction company, Haake Builders in Joliet Illinois. He built many fine homes.
Bernard later operated the concessions and amusements in Pioneer Park in Aurora Illinois and Pilcher Park in Joliet, Illinois. He loved making children happy.
Bernard loved Baseball and had his own team , He had 2 letters from the Chicago White Sox wanting him to try out because of his pitching skills. He had a mean curve ball.
He also loved to box and had won 2 Golden Gloves. He never lost a match.
Bernard and Barbara were wed in 1983 and moved from Joliet , Illinois to Florida where they were owners/operators of family run amusement rides and games for church events..
Bernard retired to White Springs, Florida where Bernard started Skunkie Acres Animal park and No Kill Animal Rescue. They became a 501(c)(3) in 2007.
There were always teens that would come out to volunteer at Skunkie Acres and they learned that there was more to life than computer games and television. These teens learned how to care for animals and also learned how to ride horses.
Skunkie Acres relocated to Citra, Florida in 2014
If you ever needed to find Bernie all you had to do was to follow the crowd of animals which always surrounded him. The animals miss him dearly.
Above all Bernard always cared for his children and made sure they needed nothing. Family was always a priority. . Children were always first. He would have happily given his life if needed without any question for any of his children.
Bernie had a big heart. There were many times that we had extra plates at the table for travelers that were broke down, especially over the holidays, and he helped them get back on the road again.
He will be terribly missed by all who knew and loved him. He will also be missed by Bill William, the head skunk and the skunk family of Skunkie Acres.
As a note for some of his older Children not part of his immediate family , Bernie wanted you to know that he forgives you.
