Gregg Allen Rich, age 60, of Cornish, NH, passed away on January 27, 2025, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on August 25th, 1964, in Park Ridge, Illinois, Gregg was the son of Grant Llewellyn Rich and Margaret Rich (Mascenic). Gregg was born outside of Chicago, then moved to New Jersey before settling in New Hampshire, where he found his home.
Gregg graduated from Cherry Hill High School, in New Jersey, and went on to pursue a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management at Newbury College, in Massachusetts. With this degree, he assisted his parents in the running of the Pleasant Lake Inn, in New London, NH, which the family owned for fourteen years. However, Gregg found his passion in the art of growing gardens and tending to them. He loved growing and planting, working the land, and watching things bloom. Gregg was fortunate enough to work at a private residence in Vermont, tending and caring for the gardens there and expressing his natural love for ‘creating live beauty’ as he would say.
On May 16, 1999, Gregg married Kimberly Rich (Desrochers) on Trunk Bay beach in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the two of them could celebrate their marriage by being surrounded by nature, just the two of them, with the sun on their shoulders, and sand beneath their feet.
Gregg was happiest when he was spending time with family - his wife Kim, their twin daughters, Hadley and Hannah; and their younger son, Liam.
Gregg found the most joy in having his hands in the dirt or his feet on the slopes. He made sure to share his hobbies with all his children, especially his love for skiing, so he taught his children how to ski at an early age so they could enjoy the sport together.
Following, his cancer diagnosis, he was determined to create as many memories with his family as possible. He prioritized traveling and family time to make as many lasting memories as possible. Traveling to places such as Mexico, Belize, Cape Cod, New York City, the Outer Banks, and many more.
Gregg is survived by his wife Kimberly Rich of 25 years, and his three children; Hadley, Hannah, and Liam. His father Grant Rich; sister Gayle Irick; sister-in-laws Nancy Rich, Karen Desorchers, Kristine Desorchers; brother-in-laws Kevin Desorchers and Sean Carpenter; and nieces and nephews Rebecca Russell, Emily Irick, Grant Rich, Lauren Scaramella, Lindsey Poulin, Angel Desrochers, Shawn Birtholet, Alivia Arrey-mbi, Gwen Carpenter, and Shae Carpenter.
He is preceded by his mother Margaret Rich, brothers Grant and Glenn Rich, and nephew Justin Irick.
His celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, from 1 pm to 4 pm, at the Common Man in Claremont, New Hampshire.

Ralph “Tiny” Reed of Unity Center NH came to the end of his road on January 10, 2025. Fourth son of Albert and Abbie Mann Reed of Unity Center, he arrived on August 14th, 1935. Ralph was born at the Sullivan County Home medical facility, because of this he enjoyed recognition as the “Oldest resident who was born in Unity and still living in Unity”.

He and his three brothers grew up on the north side of the street in Unity Center. Ralph stayed there his whole life, only moving across the street to his grandparents’ place next to the Town Hall. He was pleased to round out his years, 89 years later at the place he was born, the Sullivan County Home.

Ralph was preceded in death by his treasured Margaret Hartwell Clark, brothers Charles Reed and Frank Reed, and nephew Jimmy Reed.

Ralph is survived by his brother Ed and his wife Barbara Reed, their children Lori Schrepfer of North Hampton, NH, James and Rachel Schrepfer and daughter Sophia of Hope Mills NC, Mark Schrepfer of Allenstown NH, Kathryn and Brad Kelly of Mauldin SC. Margery Reed of North Charlestown NH and her children, John and Michelle Reed of Claremont, Sue Reed of Hanover NH. MaryEllen Reed of Claremont, NH and her children Scott and Katie Reed of Claremont NH, Jeffrey and Meagan Reed and their daughters Molly and Emma of Sunapee NH. Ronnie and Phyllis Clark of Lempster NH and their children Beth Clark-Moulton; Joe Moulton of Lempster and daughters Sydney Mckenzie, Troy and Melissa Clark of Lowville NY and their sons Matt and Sam. Cousin June Merriam Caster of Murrieta CA.

He grew up helping his grandparents Frank and Carrie Whitney Reed with their farm and blueberry lot, and with his folks’ small farm. Ralph went to Unity School through 8th grade, then Stevens HS in Claremont, graduating in 1953. He followed his brothers into mechanical occupations as a heavy equipment operator starting with Fred Carmen in Alstead, NH. For decades Tiny worked as a driver for O.H. Lewis in Claremont and Johnson & Dix in Lebanon, driving gasoline tankers from Boston and Portland 10 times a week to supply the Upper Valley. He safely drove those trucks over 2 million miles.

Ralph started going to Tunbridge Fair at 16 and said he “survived 69 years” of the fair. He hinted at some wild escapades and loved going to get fresh cider from the Antique Hill press.

Margaret and Ralph met at a dance and built a life together. They supported all their family from the old folks, to the fun excursions with many nephews, nieces and grandkids. They joined several antique tractor clubs, competing at fairs and parades with his John Deere. He was a frequent visitor at Reed Truck Services, run by his brother and then nephew since 1959. Tiny enjoyed junkets to upstate NY to visit Margaret’s grandson or just to go to a favorite diner for breakfast with a fellow driver.

In later years their garage facing the Town Hall became a hospitable gathering place for friends, from childhood through new folks just moved to town, joined by family on Old Home Day. The stories and photos shared there were a mix of family history, vehicle repairs, and tall tales of the old days in Unity.

Thanks to Valley Regional Hospital, Dartmouth Health, the Sullivan County Home and Lake Sunapee VNA and Hospice Care for the kind care they gave Mr. Reed throughout his life, particularly these last months in his period of declining health.

And thanks to the many family, friends and neighbors who visited with Ralph over the years right to his last days.

A service will be held later this year in Unity, NH.

Ronald Erisman, having attained the remarkable age of 95 years, departed this life on January 11, 2025. Ronald is survived by his son, Aaron and wife Kathleen, daughter, Rebecca and husband, Raymond Adams, and son, Andrew and wife, Cheryl; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three descendants in the fourth generation as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronald was born in Mt. Kisco, New York on December 12, 1929, the son of Herman and Emily Reynolds Erisman and younger brother of Winifred Michaels. He lived much of his youth in Katonah, New York. There he was born anew of the Holy Spirit, receiving Christ Jesus as his personal Savior. After serving in the United States Army Medical Corps, with a posting in Europe, he studied Christian ministry at Trinity College in Clearwater, Florida. There he met and married Priscilla Haynes.

Following his graduation from college, Ronald and Priscilla moved to North Charlestown, New Hampshire. Ronald worked at various occupations to provide for his family, but his passion was serving Calvary Baptist Church as a deacon and youth leader. Ronald frequented work days for a youth camp operated by Child Evangelism Fellowship of New Hampshire. In later years he invested many hours establishing hiking and riding trails for the camp. Ronald enjoyed painting and photographing landscapes. He treasured friendships with former coworkers, neighbors, and others encountered in his course of life.

Dad's life was not notable for the comfort that he enjoyed but for his faithfulness. We believe that, having left time behind, he has seen the fulfillment of what was foreseen by the apostle James: “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

A memorial service for Ronald and Priscilla (who passed away August 16, 2020) will be held on February 8, 2025 at 1:00 PM at the Calvary Baptist Church. Anyone wishing to make a memorial gift for them is encouraged to contribute to Calvary Baptist Church Help Fund which is used by the deacons to help people within the church meet financial emergencies.

Norma “Chicky” A. (Ferland) Bowie passed away at the age of 73 on January 8, 2025 at Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont, NH due to complications from recent surgery. She was with her daughter at the time of her passing.

Chicky was born September 27, 1951 at Claremont General Hospital in Claremont NH to George L. Ferland & Gilberta L. (St. Pierre) Ferland. She graduated from St. Mary’s high school in Claremont. She went on to complete cosmetology schooling in Manchester, NH.

Chicky spent the subsequent 34 years serving Claremont and surrounding communities at her hair salon: Chicky’s Beauty Coop on Red Water Brook Rd. Her clients became close friends & family to her, and they felt the same of her. Chicky’s Beauty Coop was not just a hair salon but a place of laughter, friendship, and the kind of therapy you only get with your hairdresser! Her clients brought her much joy and camaraderie over the years as she saw them get married, grow their families, welcome grandchildren and mourn losses. After moving on from The Beauty Coop, Chicky spent several years working for Connecticut Valley & Lake Sunapee Visiting Nurses where she continued to care for her community in their homes as a homemaker. Each of them hold a special place in her heart. Many a holiday she’d put together plates and deliver a holiday meal, complete with a slice of pie, to those who didn’t have family close by.

If you’d met Chicky, even for a mere moment, you felt the joy and positivity that naturally exuded from her. Her laugh was contagious, and her dance moves were ones that only John Travolta himself (think Saturday Night Fever) could have kept up with! However, dancing was her second love: her first and forever love has always been the beach: lake beaches, ocean beaches, ALL the beaches! Her favorite was walking York Beach in Maine with her friend, Denise Bowie Thomas. Denise would vacation every summer at York and Chicky would join her for a day or so to walk the beach, feel the waves, swim in that cold ocean and enjoy some penuche fudge. When she wasn’t at the beach, or on the dance floor, she was probably working on a puzzle or a picture collage. She loved looking at old photos and sharing some with family and friends when she came upon “good” ones, as she’d say. She could play a mean game of Canasta and beat her daughter at many games of Scrabble. And she never said no to a good game of bingo! But the most joy she had was when she got to see and spend time with her granddaughter, Eleanor. Being a Mémère was her most precious role in life, and it absolutely suited her.

If you didn’t know Chicky from The Beauty Coop or the Visiting Nurses Associations, you probably encountered her at one of her several volunteer gigs over the years. Chicky was active in the Claremont Moose Lodge and Claremont Eagle’s clubs when they were active. She also spent a lot of time volunteering with the Sullivan County Humane Society in Claremont NH. She loved every kitty she met there while cleaning. And she loved volunteering for crowd control at their low-cost rabies clinics. Her laugh could be heard inside while she was outside keeping those waiting in line entertained! Here, we speak of that laugh again. People would be in line, on a cold rainy April morning, waiting to bring their dog/cat in for a rabies shot and she’d be outside cracking jokes and keeping everyone laughing. No matter what, Chicky found and shared humor in everything and with everyone.

Chicky spent her last 2 weeks recovering from hip & leg surgery, being cared for by the staff at the Sullivan County Health Care facility in Unity NH. There, she felt fortunate that she was able to see her nephews Derek Ferland & Phillip Perry almost daily, and for the help they provided her at the facility. If you were lucky enough to know Chicky, you know she fell in love with all the staff and her care team there. She was extremely thankful for the care and compassion she received from them.

Chicky was predeceased by her parents, George & Gilberta (St. Pierre) Ferland, three brothers, Renè Ferland, Norman Ferland & Denis Ferland, as well as three nephews, Adam Ferland, Norman Perry and Russell Perry, and a great nephew, Sam Ferland Seamons.

She is survived by her husband, Howard A. Bowie Jr, her son, Howard A. Bowie III, her granddaughter Eleanor T. Bowie, and her daughter, Sara J. (Bowie) Svendsen. She is also survived by her siblings, and many nieces and nephews as follows: Her sister Murielle (Ferland) Fowler and her children Phillip Perry, Daniel McLellan, Kate (Tardiff) Rochon and Peter Hall. Her sister Jeanne (Ferland) Leavitt, her husband John Leavitt and their children Jeffrey Leavitt and Jason Leavitt. Her brother Bernard Ferland and his wife Rebecca Ferland and their children Bradley Ferland, Brent Ferland, Jennifer (Ferland) Seamons and Jeanne (Ferland) Yamash*ta. Her brother, Louis Ferland & his wife Nancy and their son, Spencer Ferland. Her brother Renè’s children: Renè Ferland Jr, Scott Ferland and Aimee Ferland. Her brother Denis’s children: Denis Ferland Jr, James Ferland, Christopher Ferland, Gabriel Ferland and Jan Ferland. Her brother Norman’s sons: Derek Ferland and Kirk Ferland.

To respect Chicky’s wishes, there will not be services. Her wishes to be cremated are being fulfilled through Stringer’s Funeral Home in Claremont NH. Her children will bring Chicky back to her favorite ocean spot this spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider sending a donation in her memory to help the rescue kitties at the Sullivan County Humane Society, PO Box 111, Claremont NH 03743. May the memories of Chicky and her laughter bring peace to those who know and love her. We shall not use the past tense here. A heart as large as Chicky’s, and a life as impactful as hers to so many, will live on in those that have the privilege of knowing her.

MSGT Louis “Louie” Hipwell (ret.)
12/18/1922 - 1/8/2025

Louis Hipwell of Claremont, N.H. passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes at Woodlawn Care Center in Newport, N.H. at the age of 102. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Doris back in 2015 after 69 years of a wonderful marriage.

He is survived by the last of six siblings. His sister Eleanor Patch who resides in Florida, his eldest son Brian of Lebanon and his youngest son David of Claremont. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren

Louie was a 1941 graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Claremont.

Louie was a member of the ever-shrinking “Greatest Generation,” a 22 year Marine Corps veteran who fought in the South Pacific with the 1st. Marine Division at Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu where he received two purple hearts.

He tended bar at the American Legion and the Elks Club in Claremont, but was best known for running the Claremont Country Club where his love for the game and the love for his comrades made it his dream job. Louie ran the bar and the pro shop for a number of years, and fully retired in his early 70’s. He continued on as an active playing member till he was 93!

Louie was very well known in town and loved by many. At 102, he witnessed the Great Depression. He saw technological advances that introduced the telephone, radio and TV to computers, cell phones and electric vehicles into our everyday lives. He witnessed the space race, the first landing on the moon, and the collapse of the Berlin Wall. He has experienced the brutal inhumanity of war and the never ending love of his beautiful wife. He was a man’s man, tough yet caring. A witty, comical man that could make you laugh. When the chips were down, he kept moving forward. The only complaint he had was that he outlived most of his peers and that made him sad. I know this because he was my Father and best friend.
“Semper Fidelis” from one Marine to another. You will truly be missed.

Per Louie’s request, there are to be no calling hours or service
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Claremont Soup Kitchen.
