Professional angler Kevin VanDam spent part of last week in Oklahoma for Major League Fishing’s REDCREST Championship. During his time in our great state The Kevin VanDam Foundation generously donated $5,000 to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC) to kick off an F1 Largemouth Bass stocking program at Grand Lake. The Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Foundation matched that donation, then three others followed suit — Flying Squirrel Farms gave $10,000 and the Swank Family Foundation and Whiskey Point at Grand Lake donated $5,000 each.

In all, as of now $30,000 will go toward stocking Grand Lake with the F1 Florida Strain Largemouth Bass. They’re also known as Tiger Bass and have the potential to grow larger than Oklahoma’s native largemouth bass. ODWC’s fisheries biologists have been studying Tiger Bass and say they will not impact the state’s native bass population.

“Hopefully we can continue to do this year after year after year,” VanDam said. “If we can get these fish to take off you might start seeing things that happen in Texas and Tennessee where we’re seeing these 10+ pounders turn up on a really regular basis.”

The KVD Foundation also donated toward putting more artificial fish habitats in Grand Lake.

We are so grateful to Kevin VanDam and The KVD Foundation for caring about Oklahoma’s conservation efforts. Thank you, KVD, for the generous donation and to all the others who have stepped up to match his gift.

Turkey Hunting Rules Change for 2022: Spring turkey season won’t be the same this year because the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has changed season dates and bag limits statewide.

-The spring turkey season dates are April 16 to May 16, statewide.

-The spring turkey season bag limit is one tom turkey per hunter. A tom is defined as any bearded turkey.

-The youth spring turkey season will be the Saturday and Sunday before April 16 (this year that is April 9 & 10). A turkey taken during youth spring turkey season counts toward the regular season limit of one turkey per hunter.

Here’s an Outdoor Oklahoma article that explains why ODWC decides to make these changes.

How fat are the Stouts? Too fat for oysters?

It started with the Stouts in the 18th Century. Maybe it’s because opposites attract – the saline character of a fresh oyster and the dark-roasted malts of a glass of Stout. Or, perhaps it’s because oysters were a common snack served at public houses and taverns when Stouts were emerging in the pubs of Ireland and England. At any rate, Guinness first popularized the word stout to characterize their really strong Porters and the Stout Porter was born and advertised as a healthful, strengthening drink.

Dark beers are brewed with barley, roasted in a process similar to the roasting of coffee beans. The end result is a hint of bittersweet chocolate and espresso tones that serve to balance the briny oyster.

There is even an Oyster Stout - it first appeared in New Zealand in 1929 and was made with a handful of oysters in the barrel. Brewers warned that their Oyster Stout was not suitable for vegetarians!

Today, Marston’s Oyster Stout uses the name to imply that the beer would be suitable for drinking with oysters. We can relate to that!

Have you signed up for Oysters & Ale yet?!
