Exciting News! Meet Our Newest Team Member, Talyn!

We are thrilled to welcome Talyn to our clinic family as a veterinary assistant! Talyn joined us in February 2025, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and a passion for all things avian and exotic.

They graduated from SUNY Oswego in 2023 with a degree in Zoology, focusing on ornithology and behavioral evolution. Talyn has already made a huge impact in the world of bird research, working on projects related to bird behavior changes caused by urbanization and even helping band birds at the Rice Creek Bird Observatory.

But Talyn's talents don’t stop there! When they’re not helping animals, they’re a “creature concept artist” for a startup game company, the author and illustrator of The Birds of Rice Creek field guide, and an avid musician and woodworker. Currently, they’re building a cozy indoor playroom for their three feathered friends: Ozzie (yellow budgie), Gully (blue budgie), and Pickled Cabbage (green-cheek conure).

We’re beyond excited to have someone with such a unique combination of expertise, creativity, and dedication to the world of birds and exotic animals! Help us give Talyn a warm welcome to the team!

🦠 Understanding Avian Influenza (AI) and How to Protect Poultry 🐦

Avian influenza (AI) viruses naturally occur in wild aquatic birds and can spread to domestic poultry. It’s important to understand the different types of AI and how we can prevent its impact on poultry populations. Here’s a quick breakdown:

🔹 Basic Facts:

AI viruses are classified as low pathogenic (LPAI) or high pathogenic (HPAI), based on their severity in poultry.
LPAI causes mild respiratory signs, while HPAI can lead to severe disease with mortality rates up to 100%.
Transmission occurs via ingestion or inhalation, with infected birds shedding the virus in saliva, mucus, and f***s.
🔹 Details:

AI viruses are identified by H and N surface proteins. Most are low pathogenic, but some H5 and H7 strains can be highly pathogenic.
Human infections are rare and usually occur through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated surfaces.
While low-pathogenic forms are common among migrating waterfowl, highly pathogenic strains can emerge from mutations.
🔹 Clinical Signs:

LPAI often results in mild symptoms or no noticeable signs unless birds are under additional stress or infected by other diseases.
HPAI can cause severe symptoms, including sudden death, swelling, discoloration, and hemorrhages. Survivors may show neurological symptoms like torticollis or paralysis.
🔹 Treatment & Prevention:

Vaccines are available to prevent clinical signs and reduce viral shedding in poultry.
AI outbreaks are reportable to state and federal authorities. HPAI outbreaks may require depopulation to control spread.
🔹 Precautions:

Wash your hands and wear gloves when handling healthy waterfowl.
Additional PPE (like face shields or Tyvek suits) may be needed for birds showing symptoms of AI.
Maintain strict biosecurity measures to prevent spreading the virus, especially when moving between sites or entering poultry facilities.
🐔 Stay vigilant and informed to help protect both poultry and people from the risks of avian influenza!

We're thrilled to introduce our newest licensed veterinary technician, Andrea! Originally from Hilton, NY, Andrea brings a wealth of knowledge and a special love for all things rodents, especially guinea pigs!
When she's not at work, Andrea enjoys spending time with her variety of animals (including her uromastyx, Dwight, who’s definitely the boss! ), caring for her house plants, doing arts and crafts, and, of course, buying way too many books and collecting rocks. We’re so excited to have her join our team! Please help us give Andrea a warm welcome!

A current client has 2 baby male degus (born October 7th, 2024) that are the last of the litter in need to be rehomed. They are funny little guys who love their treats and love to climb and run for endless hours on their wheel. They will come with a bag of food and some of their favorite treats/toys. They do require a pretty large cage, but she also has a small cage that can be negotiated in. She is asking for $90 for the pair and may be willing to travel to meet for pick up to Rochester/Chautauqua County areas if needed.
