Thanksgiving is a joyful occasion, but it also brings a bit of chaos and stress. Whether you're hosting dinner or traveling to stay with family elsewhere, it's important to consider how you want to handle the holiday when dogs and children are in the mix. Here are 3 factors that go into a safe and successful Thanksgiving day plan!

Family Paws educators like me *love* talking about safety logistics. If you need help figuring out how to manage dogs and kids amidst the holiday merriment, let us be part of the solution!

"Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really." - Alice Sligh Turnbull

No matter how long and charmed a dog's life, the goodbye always feels too soon. We are mourning the passing of Buster, but are so grateful for the time we shared with him over the years. He played the straight man to his goofball sister and he wasn't shy about letting us know when it was time to quit the shenanigans and get him leashed up for our walk. (Photo evidence of him telling us off included!) We loved you so dearly, Boosty, and we'll miss the way you'd sidle up to us to tuck in under our arms for a butt scratch. Rest easy, sweet boy 🌈❤️

It's time for another installment of Drea and seasonal foliage 🍂🍁 The seasons may change but one thing that remains constant is this old lady's love for sniffing! She doesn't move as fast as she once did but she enjoys her leisurely strolls, checking out all the autumn smells. A senior dog's physical needs will likely change as they age but it's still important that they get mental stimulation and enrichment!

This introduction is long overdue! Isla joined the Hounds Family the very first week she came home, back in August. Her awesome family is so dedicated to giving her the best start in life- it's been a pleasure supporting them through the rollercoaster ride of puppyhood 😅 Now that she's fully vaccinated and ready to take on the big wide world, we're working on some of the skills she'll use in all of life's adventures. We're having so much fun!

Happy 10th birthday to us! It's been exactly a decade to the day since We Leash The Hounds was officially created and we're so grateful for all the amazing people and dogs we've had the privilege of working with in that time.

There are some special faces missing from this recap but rest assured we remember each and every dog we've met with fondness. If you've been a part of our journey to this point, thank you!

It feels like this month is absolutely flying by 🦇 We've been extra busy working with clients old and new but we wanted to poke our heads out and say hi! Here's a little throwback Thursday of Max from the last time we saw him. This grizzled little guy is sweet as pie!

Hope you're all having a happy autumn so far! 🍁🎃

You know who's really dang cute? Muffin! This handsome boy and I had our first session together last week. We took it slow and steady since he was a little nervous to work solo. By the end of our walk I discovered he loves running after a tossed treat and rooting around in the grass to find it. And he's very excited by crinkly p**p bags 🤭

We're going to be working on a few skills and tweaking his routine to help him acclimate to the 'new normal' now that he's a big brother to a human baby. I'm so happy to help support this sweet, sensitive guy!

Seeing as it's Animal Pain Awareness Month, I thought it was the perfect time to look at how pain in dogs and the Family Paws framework intersect.

It's hard for us to see our pups in pain but the good news is that if you're Dog Aware, you already have the tools you need to ensure safety and comfort in your home. Pain can make dogs more irritable and anti-social, or it can cause them to be more anxious and in need of comfort and reassurance. In all cases, it's going to mean they need to be handled with extra special care- something little hands aren't quite capable of.

Family Paws is here to support you, your dog and your children in implementing systems that work for your home and your needs.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month! Many dogs (among other pets) live with undiagnosed pain because we as pet guardians don't understand what we're seeing or know what to look for. Here are some of the most common behaviors that might prompt you to investigate pain with your vet.

As pet professionals, the signs we notice with the most overwhelming frequency are 1. Hesitancy around the use of stairs and 2. Reluctance to jump up or down from one surface to another. When we noticed these changes in our own senior dog, we knew we needed to do something about it. The good news is that there are steps you can take to make life easier and address pain in your dog!

Being a reactive dog parent is hard! It can be isolating, embarrassing, frustrating and even heartbreaking. Those of us who know the struggle can absolutely spot one another in the wild. Getting silent support in the form of a sympathetic smile when your dog is having a meltdown can go a long way. If you've never been around a reactive dog before, here are some of the things we wish everyone knew!
