You know who's really dang cute? Muffin! This handsome boy and I had our first session together last week. We took it slow and steady since he was a little nervous to work solo. By the end of our walk I discovered he loves running after a tossed treat and rooting around in the grass to find it. And he's very excited by crinkly p**p bags 🀭

We're going to be working on a few skills and tweaking his routine to help him acclimate to the 'new normal' now that he's a big brother to a human baby. I'm so happy to help support this sweet, sensitive guy!

Seeing as it's Animal Pain Awareness Month, I thought it was the perfect time to look at how pain in dogs and the Family Paws framework intersect.

It's hard for us to see our pups in pain but the good news is that if you're Dog Aware, you already have the tools you need to ensure safety and comfort in your home. Pain can make dogs more irritable and anti-social, or it can cause them to be more anxious and in need of comfort and reassurance. In all cases, it's going to mean they need to be handled with extra special care- something little hands aren't quite capable of.

Family Paws is here to support you, your dog and your children in implementing systems that work for your home and your needs.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month! Many dogs (among other pets) live with undiagnosed pain because we as pet guardians don't understand what we're seeing or know what to look for. Here are some of the most common behaviors that might prompt you to investigate pain with your vet.

As pet professionals, the signs we notice with the most overwhelming frequency are 1. Hesitancy around the use of stairs and 2. Reluctance to jump up or down from one surface to another. When we noticed these changes in our own senior dog, we knew we needed to do something about it. The good news is that there are steps you can take to make life easier and address pain in your dog!

Your dog can't talk. They can't say "Sliding around on the stairs is painful" or "I prefer not to walk there because it's too slippery". What you might notice is changes in their behavior that indicate they'd rather *not* do something, and that's often because it's hard or unpleasant.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month and if there's one thing we believe in, it's advocating for simple accommodations that help to avoid or reduce pain in dogs. No matter their age, your dog can seriously benefit from better traction in your home. How many times would you need to slip or fall before you did something about it? Probably not as many times as your dog has.

Paws up with Charlie! We were doing some sniffy exploration (and a sneaky desensitization and counter conditioning session with traffic sounds from big trucks) in a field when we passed some metal benches. It was the perfect time to show Charlie a super simple cue we can use in lots of different environments. He got it right away, of course!

Our summer break did not go the way we were expecting and we found ourselves unexpectedly navigating the end of life journey with our mascot and beloved companion Nox. Our hearts are very, very tender at the moment, as you can imagine. We ask that you bear with us if we're a little quiet or quick to get the pups outside over the next week or so. We promise it's not personal, we just need a little space πŸ«‚ We look forward to the comfort of all our furry friends when we return to work on Tuesday ❀️

Ok, so our "birthday" isn't *technically* until October, but we just couldn't wait to start using our new logo 😁 After almost 10 years in business we thought it was time for a refresh. Our colors and our inspiration- our senior girl Nox- are the same as ever, but our new logo now reflects the full scope of what we offer. A big thanks to for the help!

You'll start seeing this new logo moving forward but rest assured that you're getting the same professional and dedicated service you've come to expect from We Leash The Hounds πŸ•

"Reduce, reuse, recycle" - Maddie, probably πŸ˜‚ It's not uncommon for dogs to bring toys out on a walk with them or find a good stick to carry along the way. Holding something in their mouths can provide an outlet and a source of comfort for dogs in overstimulating environments. Maddie likes to pick up recyclables! Here's a recent photo of one of her emotional support water bottles.

Being a reactive dog parent is hard! It can be isolating, embarrassing, frustrating and even heartbreaking. Those of us who know the struggle can absolutely spot one another in the wild. Getting silent support in the form of a sympathetic smile when your dog is having a meltdown can go a long way. If you've never been around a reactive dog before, here are some of the things we wish everyone knew!

We are grieving the unexpected loss of a beloved Hounds family member today 🐢🌈Rooney was such a unique spirit, a cannonball of love, humor and joy. We loved him so much and will never forget the feel of getting gently scraped by his bottom teeth when he tried to give smooches. Rooney Tunes, Roo Roo, The Tactical Meatball- you were such a goofball in the very best way and the world is a little less bright without you in it πŸ’”
