Does your pet eagerly watch you cook, hoping for a tasty treat to fall their way? Remember, it's essential to never leave pets unattended in the kitchen while cooking. Pets may accidentally jump onto stovetops or knock over hot items, causing fires or burns. Use stove k**b covers to prevent pets from accidentally turning on burners.

And the answer is :
BLADDER STONES
Bladder stones are fairly common in dogs, cats, Guinea pigs and other rodents, and sheep and goats as well as many other species. In rarer instances, they can also form stones in the kidneys with or without bladder stones but these are usually smaller and fewer. Stones come in all shapes and sizes as you see in the pics below. Their appearance can depend on the mineral type they’re made of and how long they’ve been there. There are several types of stones with the most common being magnesium ammonium phosphate (Struvite) and calcium oxalate, but there are many others. Some of these stones can be dissolved with a specific prescription diet. However, as in this case, some dogs even on the prescribed diet have stones that won’t dissolve or dissolve very slowly leaving the animal uncomfortable and perhaps having symptoms of straining, incontinence, and UTI’s with blood. In these cases a Cystotomy (surgery of the bladder) is needed. The stones are removed and sent for mineral analysis to determine the best prevention strategy because they can come back, even within 1-2 years. To diagnose stones, first a urinalysis is done to look for signs of infection and/or crystals and these are treated with antibiotics and sometimes prescription diet. If symptoms recur, the next step is to do X-rays (or ultrasound) to look for stones and rule out other causes. Blood work should also be done. if kidney stones are found, dissolving with prescription diet or surgery will be recommended. If your pet is urinating frequently, straining to urinate, has blood in their urine, seems uncomfortable, having accidents in the house, call our office to make an appointment for an exam and urinalysis (bring a sample if possible). There are many other possible causes of all or some of these symptoms such as urinary tract infection, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, adrenal gland disease, behavior, or hormones. So get your pet checked out so they can be properly managed or treated, we can relieve any pain or discomfort, and we can prevent life threatening consequences such as complete urinary obstruction, permanent bladder or kidney damage, bladder rupture, and sepsis (whole body infection).

Did you know . . .
Pets can suffer from behavior problems much like mental illness in humans. Dogs and cats can have anxiety, depression, phobias, aggression, etc. that affect their behavior, activities, and even everyday lives. This, of course, affects your life as their owner as well. The number one management key to all of these is training by a professional. If your pet is having behavior problems, we encourage you to seek treatment by a veterinary behaviorist or trainer that is qualified in the treatment of your dog's specific issues located in your area. Supplements and medications can also help behavior problems and easement of anxiety, especially when paired with training. Call our office to schedule a behavior assessment and consultation and discuss options including oral homeopathic supplements, aids such as wearable comfort devices, room diffusers or sprays containing safe calming pheromones, or prescription medications. Many of these can be used just for stressful situations and and some can be used on a daily basis if needed.
