If you think a houndsman is a lazy hunter who has an unfair advantage , you may need to know that a houndsman spends countless hours sitting beside a welping female , they have many sleepless nights caring for an injured hound, Spend more frustrating days in the woods trying to train a stubborn pup than actually hunting, all while spending thousands of dollars on equipment , vet bills and travel.

All mighty God , we know that You do not dwell in temples or buildings made with human hands, for even creation itself - the beautiful fields, hills, and valleys all around us, cannot contain your splendor, majesty, and glory.
Bless the hounds that bring us much joy. They, too, are creatures of Your creation and You have entrusted them to us for our use and pleasure. May their run be swift, their scent be keen, and may they bring glory to You even as You have created them.
Bless the game that gives us sport.
May he be swift and sly as You have created him, so that he may escape to run yet another day. Help us all to understand the worth of all Your creatures and in doing so understand Your worth as well.
In your name Lord, May each person that has gathered here share in a spirit of sportsmanship, respect, and mutual care. Amen.
🙏

What it’s all about y’all!
• People have a tendency to think that we just push some sort of button. That houndsmen are cruel to their hounds and the game they pursue. That is far from true! These little hounds are our family. I promise they’re in better shape than your pet. They love what they do. It’s about the process of the hunt. I pass up killing rabbits more often than killing for the sake of listening to my dogs run. Its the journey not the kill.

So God made a Hound.

God said I need someone brave enough to fight the hurricane force of a bear that won't tree, so God made a Hound.

God said I need someone with feet tough enough to run miles in the snow, ice, rocks, and hot sand, so God made a Hound.

God said I need someone with a nose able to smell its quarry while driving down the road, so God made a Hound.

God said I need a companion for the hunter with the desire to wander into the unknown and make it home safe, so God made a Hound.

God said I need someone with the grit to bay bears, hogs, c***s, lions, bobcats, coyotes, deer, leopards, and all other beasts of tooth and claw, yet gentle enough to sleep at the foot of the bed, so God made a Hound.

God said I need someone with the tenacity to lead the pack into a battle of unknown, so God made a Hound.

God said I need someone who will sit and shake and play ball with its handler and provide a meal for the pack and owner in the same day, so God made a Hound.

God said, with a tear in his eye, I need a best friend, for every hunter I created, someone who will walk many miles next to them and share a life many will never know. He said I need someone who will be loyal and loving no matter what the day brought to them, someone who when the time comes, will continue to hunt on in heaven, so God Made A Hound.

GOD BLESS THE HOUND!

If you’re in the dog world I’m sure everyone by now has heard about William Gray from Sumter, SC. How he shot a Hunting Dog on his Property, called DNR and the officer let him off with $125.00 fine (which if you read the SCDNR rules & regs you’ll see this is far from what William should’ve received) then William came to brag about it on Facebook & threatening there would be more dead dogs. As far as technology has come us houndsmen have gotten a whole lot better at doing everything we can to avoid crossing private property but it’s still not a perfect system & at the end of the day a Hound can’t read a posted sign these dogs are simply doing what they were bred and trained to do. I’ve been reading a lot of comments that state “if it had been my dog…” & in reality if you own hunting dogs you should be just as livid as if it were your own dog because if you don’t use your voice and demand that the rules and regulations regarding hounds be followed, demand that every officer who takes that oath treats every hunter with the same amount of respect and fairness without regards to their own PERSONAL beliefs of what should be allowed acts like this will continuously be swept under the rug. Time & money go into these hounds just as still hunters pour theirs in food plots & stands and what the majority of hunters don’t understand is once they outlaw dog hunting what do you think comes next it’ll be the still hunters because this government today is not gonna stop until they have full control, until people are solely relying on them for meat/food that we right now can provide for ourselves. Everyone better come together for this tradition dies. Welcome to the New World.

A little something I wrote several years ago. I’m glad to see it is still being shared.

Attention all outdoor enthusiasts. That's right the bikers, hikers, horse back riders, hunters, campers and houndsmen will all converge on this wilderness, we call the NF.

1) Please don't pick up any hunting dog!
2) Our dogs that are on the side of the road are not lost. That collar with the antenna sticking up is a GPS tracking device that allows us to see where they are on a satellite map on a handheld device we have in our hands. It picks up miles away!
3) Please don't feed/water any hunting dog, they have a strict diet as they are athletes ,it's not hungry, nor thirsty.
4) If you see a hunting dog in the road slow down, don't pull up and try to talk to it. It's busy looking for a track and will be gone again in a few minutes. If it isn't, we will find it. Leave it alone.
5) If you see a truck on the side of the road with a dog box slow down, there could be a dog coming out of the woods.
6) Please don't pet any hunting dog it doesn't need a friend.
7) Please don't pick up any hunting dog !
8. If you have a hunting dog you are obligated to call the phone number on the collar.
9) The extremely expensive tracking devices are not to be tampered with in any way. Removal is considerd theft.
10) If a hunting dog appears to be thin it is because it is a marathon runner regularly traveling up to 30 miles a day at high rates of speed. Please understand it is to be considered conditioning not neglect.

We view our dogs as a hunting partner/family member and do everything in our power to keep them safe. Please respect our right to enjoy our heritage.

Sincerely,
A Houndsman.

It was an English “Redtick” Coonhound that started it all!

These sleek and racy, lean but muscular hounds work dusk to dawn in pursuit of the wily raccoon. The sight of the American English Coonhound tearing through the moonlit woods, all sinew and determination, bawling their l***y night music, is coon-hunter heaven.

Why do you love the breed?

So you've found a hunting dog all alone out in the woods or mountains what do you do now? We tend to have a lot of people pickup dogs that they think are lost when we are out hunting. Hounds can range more than a mile or two from their handler in a hunt while still being tracked on GPS by the owners. bird dogs tend to stay closer but sometimes they range out also. So here are some tips on what to do if you find a loose dog.

1) Unless its injured or doesn't have any collars on please leave it alone, if you're worried check the collars for contact numbers and names to call. Most hunting dogs will have tracking collars on that allow the owner to follow their every move even when they can't see them.

2) If you do end up taking the dog please DON'T remove any collars from the dog as if he gets loose from you to go look for his owners his chances of finding his owner is immediately diminished with no collars/contact info.

3) Don't automatically assume the dog has been abandoned, abused, or left to fend for itself, I've had more dogs spend days at the pound because someone assumed this and took the collars off and turned the dog loose to "find a good home" this is gut wrenchingly stressful to us when we can't find our hunting companions.
Do take us to the vet or pound to be scanned for a microchip.

4) Realize you may have surprised us when you tried to catch us and made us a little nervous so if we act afraid it's because we're confused as to why you're calling us not our partner.

5) If you can't leave us and have to take us home please try everything you can to find our owners as they will be worried sick about us and we love them and want to get back to our family.

Our owner appreciates your concern and asks you to realize that we are doing what we are bred to do and love to do.

Sincerely,
The New Mexico Houndsmen Association
