Great information about why the rabies vaccine is so important! ⬇️

BVC TALKS: Rabies

Rabies Month: It's Rabies month and we are having discounts on our Rabies vaccines! $4 off 1 year and $12 off 3 year vaccines. Here are some facts about Rabies vaccinations and your pet:

1. Rabies is spread by bites from one infected animal to another animal. In this area, bat and skunk rabies is not uncommon and there are several reported cases in wildlife and pets each year. The most common reason for pets or people to get exposed is through a bat getting into your home and biting. Therefore, even indoor animals can get exposed to Rabies.
2. Rabies is 100% fatal in animals and nearly 100% fatal in humans. There have only been a few cases of humans surviving, and this is with life long debilitations.
3. Signs of Rabies include disorientation, excessive salivation, stumbling, inability to eat or drink, repulsion of water (hydrophoby), seizures, fever, lethargy, coma, among others. Death occurs within 2 to 10 days of start of symptoms.
4. Once signs of Rabies occur, there is no treatment. And the only way to test for Rabies is through brain tissue. This is unfortunately done with a deceased or euthanized animal and submitting the brain to look for the Rabies virus. There is no blood or body tissue sample test.
5. The vaccine is extremely effective and very safe. Rare reactions do occur but less than 0.5% of the time. These are sometimes pain or swelling at the site of injection, facial swelling, or hives. These can be easily treated with antihistamines and pain medications. More serious reactions that require more intensive treatment are even rarer, < 0.006%.
6. Rabies is required by law in the State of Tennessee and on a local level as well (county/city laws). It is required in all dogs and cats starting between 3 to 6 months of age, and boostered according to state and local laws and manufacturer labels. Rabies certificates are the way your pet is also registered in Montgomery County as well, and the cost of your Rabies vaccine includes this mandatory fee.

Calendars are back!
Thursday Feb. 6th - Saturday Feb. 8th we will be hosting our annual Pupper Bowl party! Dogs will vote for the team they think is going to win, paired with hot dog treats!

Monday Feb. 10th-15th will be our Valentine's day party! Bring treats for your pups to give to their valentines. They will also be getting their photo taken with our sweethearts backdrop.
Be on the lookout for our Valentine's Weekend boarding special. Details coming soon.

Thursday Feb. 27th is National Chili day! Pups will be offered dog friendly. homemade chili to celebrate this day.

This week we said goodbye to our gentle giant, Rocky. He was the guardian of the littles, always watching over the pack with love and patience. Our hearts are broken, but we’re so grateful for the joy and comfort he brought to everyone he met.
