APSU Paws to Care·Tuesday, October 9, 2018·
Paws to Care (http://www.apsu.edu/paws-to-care) seeks to help the feral cats that reside on APSU's campus by transforming individuals' kindness into organized care. Feral cats have had very little contact with humans

; they typically are born to stray cats or are stray cats that have reverted to feral behavior. From living in the wild, feral cats are more susceptible to feline leukemia, rabies, and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). Also, as they have never been spayed or neutered, feral cats reproduce at an exponential rate that easily can increase a population from 12 to 2,000 in four years! However, a group, organization, or club with more resources can participate in the Adopt-a-Cat program. For $300, you can provide one feral cat with vaccinations, a spay/neuter procedure, and food for one year. We also gladly accept Purina Cat Food (Purina Cat Chow Complete in the blue bag) or coupons to be used toward the purchase of food for the cats. If you have coupons or food to donate, please see Corina Ravenscraft at the APSU Woodward Library. Good morning, everyone. It's the dreaded "Meow-nday morning" again. Today, we'd like to share a post from our sister rescue, Pawsfund. Meet little Dora. Dora is about 6 months old. She's very playful and likes to explore. She's very affectionate and loves to get pets. She's good with other cats but has never met a dog. She is skittish around unfamiliar people. Dora's 3rd eyelid was injured before she was taken into rescue. There is some scar tissue, but it does not require further medical care. She is fully vetted and ready for her forever home. If you think you'd like to meet this precious girl, please PM us or check her out on PetFinder: https://www.petfinder.com/cat/dora-71017218/tn/clarksville/pawsfund-tn1025/

Good morning, everyone! It's Thursday, which means it's a "Thankful Thursday" here on the beautiful APSU campus. Today we are thankful for many things! Monday afternoon, we got a call from one of our pawsome staff that a kitten had been found by the Dunn Center. This is Freddie. This poor little guy is about 5-6 weeks old and was *severely* flea anemic from all of the fleas he had! He would certainly have died from dehydration in the heat and was already weak and exhausted when he was found. We're SO THANKFUL that he was found and brought to us.

One of our dedicated fosters took him in, and she knew enough to triage the baby with a flea bath, Capstar (to get rid of any remaining fleas from the bath), Nutrical (for calories) and sub-q fluids and food to help re-hydrate the wee one. We're tremendously lucky and thankful for our foster Kelly! She helps us SO much!

Lastly, we're THANKFUL for all of YOU! We couldn't continue to care for these little foundlings without help and support from our amazing community and fans. If you'd like to donate to help out Freddie, you can send PayPal to: [email protected] or through our link on the APSU website: https://securelb.imodules.com/s/1806/20/lg/form.aspx?sid=1806&gid=2&pgid=413&bledit=1&dids=338 We will be taking Freddie to The Cats on Commerce, so if you'd rather make a donation directly to the vet, you may call them at (931) 292-2829. THANK YOU for any help you can give! We (and the cats) truly appreciate you! 🎩🐾💗😽

Happy Fur-i-day, everyone! We've posted for this fella before, but thought it couldn't hurt to post again. Meet Romeo. He got that name because he's such a lovey cat when it comes to people (students and faculty/staff alike) on campus. He loves Temptations treats and loves to be petted. Unfortunately, Romeo is a bully to the other cats 😔, so we're trying to find him a forever home where he can be the king (i.e. only cat) and get ALL the loves! If you're interested in giving this lover boy a forever home, please message us. Note: To keep him from trying to get back to the APSU campus, he would need to be contained for a few weeks to get used to his new environment. We have no idea how he is with dogs or kids, but we know he loves people in general. 💗

BIG SHOUT OUT to these TNR heroes! On this "Thankful Thursday", we'd like to share this post as a THANK YOU to those out doing this daily. They aren't paid to do it, but they do it because they care. We (Clarksville, TN) have a huge over-population of feral and stray cats because people don't fix their animals. We're all fighting it, but we're behind the eight ball and playing "catch up". There are just. so. many. If you can help out these wonderful hoomans, please do. If you can't donate, perhaps you can share their cause? ❤😼🐾

😸DONATION CHALLENGE!!😸

Our Cats MEOW TNR team currently has four caregivers trying to finish up colonies of cats abandoned in their areas. These individuals have big hearts but very limited income, and the financial demands on our TNR program serving our community's needs limits the amount we can contribute to each colony. Fixing these cats is critical to preventing inbreeding, suffering, & additional expenses associated with sickness & feeding.

If you are in a position to help, please use this link (http://clarksvillehumanesociety.org/programs/spay-it-forward) and select one of the following from the dropdown list:

FERAL CAT w/ ear tip - $35 to provide spay-neuter & ear tip
or
FERAL CAT PACKAGE - $55 to provide spay-neuter, ear tip, vaccines & flea/tick/ear mite treatment

In the notes, include the hashtag of the caretaker you want to help:

is a 68 year old grandmother who teaches her grandchildren compassion by feeding and sheltering the cats abandoned at her trailer park. She needs funds for just 4 MORE surgeries!

is a 70 year old disabled Clarksville resident who has given up vacations and car repairs to wake up each day at 6am to feed cats dumped at his retirement complex. He needs just 5 MORE surgeries to completely his colony!

& are 55 & 47 year old disabled veterans using their limited resources to provide for relatives, but recently three stray mama(s) and six kittens have moved in under their porch. They are willing to let them stay & feed them but can't afford the cost of fixing. Let’s honor their service & big hearts by helping them fix this newly discovered colony of 9.

If you don't have a preference on who to help, feel free to use the Facebook donation button to be applied to our general Cats Meow TNR fund to help these & other colonies in need.

THANK YOU for supporting TNR efforts in our community!!

Good morning, everyone. Today's post is a sad one, unfortunately. We don't blame you if you keep scrolling or grab a tissue.

We do our best to take care of the cats who find themselves on the beautiful APSU campus. With your generous help, we're able to keep them fed, sheltered and get them to the vet when necessary. A few days ago, one of our feeders noticed that Jet (one of our cats who has been here for about 5 years) seemed to be very thin and didn't show much interest in the dry food. She was looking kind of rough, so we decided to take her in to get checked out. It's not always possible with the ferals, but Jet has always been friendly, so it was pretty easy to catch her. She was able to feast on some delicious wet food as a treat.

Unfortunately, the news was worse than we expected. She had a mouth full of rotten teeth that needed to come out, one kidney was a lot larger than the other, she had suffered some kind of trauma (unbeknownst to us) that had misaligned her spine and ribs, and had an ear infection on top of all of that. If it would have just been the teeth, we would have fostered her for adoption and fund-raised for the money. The kidney issues and misalignment of her spine and ribs, however, were serious enough that we all felt it was kinder to let her pass the rainbow bridge. 🐾🌈

Cats are so stoic. We never suspected she was in terrible pain from her teeth, as she was always sweet and there to greet us on top of the feeding station with a small meow. The campus cats are not our personal pets, but we love them just as much. We wouldn't spend as much time, energy, and money to do what we do if we didn't care. It leaves a hole in our hearts every time we have to say goodbye to one of them, but it won't stop us from caring. They have no one else. But they have us. And they have YOU. THANK YOU for caring about them like we do. We're sorry to share such heartbreaking news.

R.I.P. Sweet, beautiful Jet. We're so sad that you're gone, but we're glad that you are no longer suffering. Thanks for all of the wonderful memories. Run free, pretty girl. 😿💔

Happy Fur-i-day, everyone! If you're on campus, we could use your help. We have a relatively new kitty that has been hanging around. He's a beautiful Flame Point (white/cream with orange mask, ears, legs and tail) that we've nicknamed "Ghost". He has been seen several places on campus, including the Honors Commons, Sevier Hall, in front of Ellington and in the wooded area behind Marks. We're trying to figure out where/when he's feeding so that we can catch him and get him fixed and vaccinated. If you happen to spot him, *please* let us know where and what time, and if you can possibly get a picture, that would be good, too. We've used our trail cam on a couple of feeding stations so far to rule them out, but this gorgeous guy seems to get around! Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated! 🤔🐾😼👻

Also, CONGRATS from the CATS to all the grads today! Let's Go, Peay! 💗🧐🎩

As a Pay it Forward, we'd like to share this request with all of you. The Cats MEOW TNR is an amazing organization that is trying to TNR as many ferals in Montgomery County as possible. They do GREAT work! They also try to adopt out the feral kittens, so that they can enjoy the safety and love of a forever home. Please help if you can, or share if you can't. They are a fantastic group and could use the help. Thank you! 😻❤

Is this not the cutest kitten pile ever; these littles born to a stray momma was taken in off the streets to find a better life. The momma was spayed this week as well, no more litters for her. She too will be able to enjoy the comfort of not being attacked while in heat.
This is a win win for mom and the babies. You see, our goal is twofold. One is to get the adults fixed, the second, work on getting kittens into a rescue. We have saved approximately 100 kittens thus far from entering the TNR process, rather they will be adopted into loving homes. We could not do this without our wonderful cat rescues, we want to give back to them but need your help. These little mouths need lots of food while growing up, we would like to do a food donation drive for the babies.

Chewy is a great thing, if you can purchase a case or 2 to help, that would be most appreciated. Maybe an office or school collection drive can be started, the more involved the merrier. Donations can be sent to The Cats on Commerce at 136 Commerce Street. Disbursement of donations will be made from there. Every can matters.

Good morning, everyone. We really appreciate our adopters, and especially so if they're APSU alumni/former Govs. Amanda and her father, Michael, adopted a Paws to Care kitty, Clove, a couple of years ago. We received a message yesterday that unfortunately, Michael's house had a tragic house fire and he lost everything, including his two fur-babies. 😿💔It's always heartbreaking to lose loved pets, but especially when it's unexpected and so tragically. We're sharing his GoFundMe in the hopes that some of our followers and fans are willing and able to help him out a little bit. Nothing is too small and everything counts when it comes to this kind of thing. If you cannot donate, please share so that the campaign can reach further in the community. R.I.P. Clove and Tiger. Michael and Amanda, we're so very sorry for your losses and we hope this will help even a little bit. 🌹 https://gofund.me/b1bb6460

Good morning, everyone! *Whew* We finally made it to Fur-i-day! Before you get to relax on your well-deserved weekend, we wanted to share with you a boy we've been trying to adopt out for over a year. Yes, he's been in foster care for over a year, now! 😿

This is Hobbes. He was found on campus about a year and a half ago, and was so friendly that we immediately thought he would be a good candidate for an inside forever home. Unfortunately, once we got him to the vet, he tested FIV+, so at that point, we couldn't have released him back on campus even if we had wanted to.

FIV used to be thought to be a death sentence to the cat who had it, but that is no longer the case. FIV+ cats can still live long, normal lives. It just means their immune systems are not as robust as they could be (so they could get sick more easily). It cannot be passed to humans, and can only be passed to other cats through deep bite wounds or if kittens are born with it.

Hobbes is now about 3 years old, has been fostered with another FIV+ cat and would probably do best as an only, spoiled cat or in a home with other FIV+ cats. He can get overly excited when he plays, so we recommend a home without young kids. Older kids will know how to handle him. The foster has been working with him to try to get him used to an indifferent dog, but as of right now, Hobbes is not a fan of dogs.

We know that all of these special needs make him a lot harder to adopt, but we're still hoping the perfect person or family is waiting for him. He has a LOT of love to give the right person/people - he has waken up his foster many times by kissing her nose. 😽

If you think you might want to meet him or give him his happily-ever-after home, please message us. If you can't, please consider sharing this post so that we can reach more people. He's on PetFinder https://www.petfinder.com/cat/hobbes-61523492/tn/clarksville/pawsfund-tn1025/ and we've shown him several times at PetSmart, but he just hasn't met his "Calvin" yet.

Hang in there, Hobbes. Your forever home is out there, somewhere! 💗🐾

Good morning, everyone! It's the dreaded Meow-nday morning, once again, but do we have a smile to start your week off right! We love getting updates from our adopters and we got a fantastic update from the pawsome couple who adopted our problem child, Rowan. Rowan was in foster care for over a year because he had problems with an overly sensitive GI tract which caused him b***y issues. We wondered if he would ever find his forever family and home. Then along came Katie and James, who were willing to give him a chance!

Here is what they said about him: "Celebrating one year since we brought this sweet boy home! Rowan is the most playful, curious, talkative, fun-loving kitty we've ever known, and he is absolutely loving life, whether critter-watching from the windows, playing fetch with his toys, ambushing us from underneath sheets of packing paper, or snuggling up next to us at night. We are so grateful to you all for taking such good care of him for so long and giving him a second chance at happiness!"

Thank YOU, Katie & James, for opening your hearts and home to give Rowan the PURR-FECT Forever Family and Home he deserved! And thank you for sharing an update with us! It really means a lot and makes it all worth it to know we're changing lives of cats and people for the better. 😽💗🐾🎩

We could really use some dry food for the cats if you have the means and want to help. We know everything is so expensive right now, and times are hard, so we *really* appreciate any and all donations! We also have a notebook inside the library where you can write your name and email address (or you can send us a private message if you'd rather). We're keeping track of the donations and whoever donates the most will win a prize at the end! Here's a picture of Freyo. He is just one of the gorgeous campus cats you'll be helping. 03/13/2024

THIS is why we TNR. Places where there are a lot of humans (college campuses, military bases, stadiums, etc.) have two things that will *always* attract animals like feral cats: they have food (and food trash) and shelter. You can get rid of all of the animals currently in an area, but if the food and shelter remain, more animals (that are NOT fixed like TNR does) will just move in and reproduce exponentially; then you have the same problem all over again, made worse because the animals are not spayed/neutered. TNR works. It works *best* with a high trap and high adoption rate, which we try to maintain. 😼 We're extremely grateful to the APSU administration for allowing us to TNR the campus cats instead of culling them. 😽

Removing cats from an area by killing or relocating them is not only cruel—it’s pointless. Animal control agencies and city governments have blindly perpetuated this futile approach for decades. But scientific research, years of failed attempts, and evidence from animal control personnel prove that catch and kill doesn’t permanently clear an area of cats.

Scientific evidence indicates that removing feral cat populations only opens up the habitat to an influx of new cats, either from neighboring territories or born from survivors. Each time cats are removed, the population will rebound through a natural phenomenon known as the “vacuum effect,” drawing the community into a costly, endless cycle of trapping and killing.

The vacuum effect is a phenomenon scientifically recognized worldwide, across all types of animal species
Well-documented among biologists, the vacuum effect describes what happens when even a portion of an animal population is permanently removed from its home range. Sooner or later, the empty habitat attracts other members of the species from neighboring areas, who move in to take advantage of the same resources that attracted the first group (like shelter and food). Killing or removing the original population does nothing to eliminate these resources; it only creates a “vacuum” that will inevitably draw in other animals living nearby.

Scientific research has observed the vacuum effect across many species—herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. When studying mountain lions, for example, one researcher noted, “When you remove resident lions that have established home ranges you create a void.” He continues, “Other resident lions that have home ranges that may overlap the individual you removed now find that territory empty. This allows them to expand their range, as well as create openings for transient lions to establish a new home range.”

Simply put, when mountain lions are removed from their habitat, other mountain lions move in. This behavior has also been documented in possums, badgers, and raccoons.

A habitat will support a population of a certain size. No matter how many animals are removed, if the resources remain, the population will eventually recover. Any cats remaining after a catch and kill effort will produce more kittens and at a higher survival rate, filling the habitat to capacity. As one study found, “populations greatly reduced by culling are likely to rebound quickly.”Over time, the number of cats in an area where a feral cat colony has been killed or relocated will simply recover and return to its original size.

Removing cats from an area is a futile effort—one that cannot succeed
The only documented “successful” effort to remove a population of cats occurred in a cruel program on uninhabited, sub-Antarctic Marion Island. It took two decades and ruthless methods—methods that are impossible to replicate in areas inhabited by people including poisoning, hunting with guns, and introducing disease—to clear the island of cats. As scientists tried each method, they noted “the recolonization of preferred habitats, cleared of cats, from neighboring suboptimal areas…” In other words, like the mountain lions, whenever they killed cats in the best habitats, the cats next door simply moved in.

The Marion Island example proves the vacuum effect while it also proves the impossibility of permanently clearing an area of an entire target population. Municipalities engaged in any type of catch and kill efforts are fighting a cruel, endless, losing battle against nature that is a gross waste of taxpayer dollars and ends hundreds of lives.

Years of failed catch and kill policies prove this method’s ineffectiveness
Animal control officers all over the country have observed the ineffectiveness of lethal methods firsthand through years of misguided policy.

Joan Brown, President and CEO of the Humane League of Lancaster County (PA), says that her organization made the switch to Trap-Neuter-Return when they started to realize that they were never making any headway with catch and kill.

“I finally went to the board and said, ‘Where in our mission statement does it say euthanize? Because all we’re doing is taking [feral cats] in to euthanize them…we’re not only doing an inhumane thing, we’re actually contributing to the problem, creating a vacuum effect that will just be filled again—and probably at a faster rate than when we started,’” says Brown.

Brown says that they noticed it was a never-ending and growing problem, draining their resources and their morale: “At the very least, we were standing still. That was clear, and it seemed as if we were running forward, but actually moving backward.”

Other animal control and shelter organizations nationwide have also taken a stand after acknowledging the failed results of their catch and kill efforts. Maricopa County, Arizona’s animal control website says, “We have over 20 years of documented proof that traditional ways of dealing with feral cats don’t work. The catch and kill method of population control (trap a cat, bring it to a shelter, ask that the cat be euthanized), has not reduced the number of feral cats. The cat may be gone, but now there is room for another cat to move in…So, catch and kill actually makes the problem worse.” And the Humane Society of Ochocos (Oregon) agrees: “…[W]e know now, that more than 30 years of trapping and killing cats has done nothing to reduce the feral cat population.”

The National Animal Control Association amended its feral cat policy in 2008 to be more supportive of Trap-Neuter-Return, in part because, as then president Mark Kumpf put it, “[i]t’s recognizing that in some cases, certain jurisdictions and communities are more interested in maintaining a stable cat population than they are in simply bailing the ocean with a thimble.”
He continues: “What we’re saying is the old standard isn’t good enough anymore. As we’ve seen before, there’s no department that I’m aware of that has enough money in their budget to simply practice the old capture and euthanize policy; nature just keeps having more kittens.”
If catch and kill had any long-term effect on cat populations, animal control officers nationwide—and their leadership organizations—would have observed it by now. Instead, they are reading the writing on the wall and switching to the method that works.

Trap-Neuter-Return is the responsible, humane method of care for feral cats
Trap-Neuter-Return stabilizes feral cat populations. The cats are humanely trapped, vaccinated, and neutered, so no more kittens will be born. They are then returned to their original location to live out their lives in their outdoor home. Not only is Trap-Neuter-Return the humane option for feral cats, it also improves cats’ lives by relieving them of the stresses of mating and pregnancy. In the end, unlike catch and kill, TNR works.

It’s time to stop the killing.
Cities and shelters across America have experienced great success with Trap-Neuter-Return—it is now official policy for feral cats in Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Chicago. It’s time to learn from past mistakes and move forward instead of going around in circles—it’s time to stop fighting the endless battle of catch and kill and protect cats’ lives.
