Amateur riders and those new to the industry may never realize the bad habits they have unintentionally created in their horses.
A horse that used to stand patiently at the mounting block for previous owners, now takes off trotting the second you sit down in the saddle. A horse that used to wait quietly to be haltered in the stall, now bulldozes through you the second you open the door.
Every single time we work with a horse, even if that’s just sharing space, we are training them to do something, whether it’s something we want them to do or not.
That being said, I think it’s extremely important to set a fund aside for the possibility that your horse may need a refresher from a professional trainer, that can help unravel some of those habits, and walk you through how those habits began, how they can be prevented, and how to reconnect with your horse to instill good habits you WANT to see in the future.
There is nothing wrong with seeking more help for you and your horse.
The GREATEST gift we can give our horses, that insures they will live long happy lives with us or away from us, is the gift of good training.
