This year I tried my hand at growing native plants along with medicinal herbs. I winter sowed a majority of them, and had some great success but definitely learning as I go! For pollinator month I’ve discounted all of my plants listed on my Etsy site. Check them out and let me know if you have any questions! Happy planting 🌱

It’s been a while but here’s a cute landscaping install I’ve done recently 🌱 I love providing variety, unique, and native plants for my customers. Keeping in mind flowering plants for every season. Native plants are not only beneficial for the environment but make pruning and maintenance for the homeowner none existent! If this is something you’ve been interested in- please send me a message! I love drawing up designs even if I’m not the one installing them. Always keeping the customer’s preferences in mind. Our potential is unlimited 💚 : hostas, hydrangea, viburnum (native), fern (native), geum (native), heuchera coral bells (native), astilbe (native), plumbago (native), hypericum, liriope (customer already had on site to incorporate)

This is called the Oniscidae. You may find them under a brick or a damp object. You may have felt disgusted and wondered why they exist in nature. Well, let me tell you, the oniscidae , better known as cochineal, is a subgroup of isopod crustaceans whose function is to remove harmful heavy metals from the earth such as mercury, cadmium and lead. They contribute to the cleansing of soil and groundwater to reaffirm the wisdom of nature. Do not damage them or spray pesticides!

Lady bug larvae 🐞 if you see these friends in your garden let them do the work!! A single ladybug will eat up to 5,000 aphids in their lifetime (and eat the most during the larval stages). They also munch on scale, mealy bugs, boil and corn ear worms. Their larvae looks totally different than their adult counterparts so don’t be alarmed when you first see them!

Stinging Nettle 🐝 Urtica Dioica

What an interesting herb! As the name suggests, this plant carries a sharp sting. When the aforementioned hairs come in contact with the skin it breaks revealing a sharp point. Then chemicals are released producing a familiar stinging sensation. Kind of like a bee sting.

Have I scared you off yet? No pain no gain here! Stinging Nettle is an amazing super herb! The roots and leaves contain a potent amount of minerals and nutrients (vitamin A/C/K, calcium, iron, magnesium, healthy fats, amino acids, chlorophyll); great for reducing internal inflammation; lowers blood pressure; alleviates allergies; can be a natural diuretic; and helps control blood sugar levels.

💚 The key is to steam harvested plant material to disarm the stinging hairs when using it raw. Great for soups, smoothies, broth, stir fry, infused liquors, and shrub. For dried nettle simply keep on protective wear, place in dehydrator at lowest setting or hanging rack. Use for tinctures, tea blends, or capsules. Recommended to harvest up until blooms begin to set.

Some even say you can use this herb as a garden or property border to keep unwanted animals out.

Stinging Nettle starter plants will be available to purchase on my online store, and in bulk as raw or dried herb starting in May.

Happy planting 🌱

🍀 Beautiful red clover growing at the compost site ❣️ there’s not enough for me to harvest any but the bees are really digging it, and I want it to go to seed so maybe next season there will be enough for me to harvest! Red clover is a great cover crop with soil amending and medicinal properties. That’s what I call a slam dunk double planting whammy 🤪

🍀 Red clover contains substances called “isoflavones” which are structurally similar to estrogen. Great daily supplement if you struggle with low estrogen.

🍀Medicinal benefits of red clover include:
- Menopause relief symptoms
- Osteoporosis treatment
- Respiratory issues (lung disease, asthma, coughs)
- Gout remedy
- Cancer
- High cholesterol

Don’t forget to stop and smell the flowers 🌱 varieties: scilla peruviana (spring bulb); Camassia cusickii (native bulb, flowers spring to summer); Japanese Maple (not a flower, but a classic & looove this texture!); Bulbine Narcissifolia (drought tolerant perennial); Clematis (cultivar patented by NCSU and unfortunately not released yet); Euphorbia Ascot Rainbow (love the “out of this world” flowers- perennial)

Doing some perennial bed installs today! I always find a way to sneak an edible plant into the arrangement 😋 not only do I design edible installations, I also do perennial, annual, and native installs. I love working with different colors and textures; and I make sure it’s all done with the pollinators in mind! These beds will be topped with compost, first fertilized with fish hydrolysate, then throughout the season with compost tea. If you’re interested in an installation (from business landscape to bars to home gardens) send me a message, we can talk plants and make all your garden dreams come true 💚💚
Plant pallet: Dark Knight Buddleja, Schizachyrium Scoparium Blaze, Schizachyrium Scoparium Blue, Lemon Lime Thyme, and Pugster Pink Buddleja. The grasses and thyme bring winter interest while the Buddleja goes dormant.

Let’s talk soil recipes! This year I’m experimenting with making my own soil mixes. Ingredients include: finished compost, peat moss, perlite (for aeration), lime (neutralizes PH of soil- peat moss can reduce PH) and worm castings (low dose of organic fertilizer). Current seed soil recipe listed at the bottom✨
A few reasons for making your own soil:
1. It provides you with more control over your growing medium. You can carefully choose what organic materials to add, avoid any unwanted chemicals, and really set a solid foundation for healthy plants to grow.
2. You can better learn how each ingredient effects the growth and quality of the plant and tweak it throughout the season. Sometimes eliminating ingredients if not needed! (Saving you $$)
3. Financially cheaper! When sourcing through your city or a local supplier, buying these materials in bulk saves so much throughout the year compared to purchasing premade bags of soil. I barely made a dent in my materials after starting 1200 seeds. Plus you always have some on hand in case you need it!
4. So much false advertising in the garden retail world! Better to take the initiative to learn for yourself instead of spending money on a product you can replicate. Seed soil recipe:
- 1 part compost (I measure by gallon- used a garden pot)
- 1 part peat moss
- 1/2 part perlite
- 1 tbsp lime per gal peat moss
- 1 cup worm castings

Love to see the garden transform! You can see remnants of last years mulch, but I like to let the garden do its thing during the winter and tidy it up in the spring. I used cardboard around the edges/between the rows topped with mulch for w**d suppressant; then w**ded the rows and laid compost mulch down. Not planting until April but never hurts to get a head start! A few medicinals are coming back: bergamot, clary sage, stinging nettle, self-heal, and comfrey. This week after work I’ll tackle the side lot 🤪 happy gardening 🌱
