How whimsical is this German chamomile 🕊 had to snap a picture before I harvested it. Wish you could smell through the phone!
Growing info:
🕊light: partial shade to full sun
🕊water: light watering if planted in ground; every other day if potted
🕊harvest: use only the blooms for this herb. Harvest blooms when fully open (as shown in the video) AND once the petals have all fallen, the pollen sack will triple in size making it easy to differentiate from new pollen sacks- these can be harvested to save the seeds or make chamomile flower powder.
🕊ok then what?: can use raw or dehydrated blooms to make teas, tincture, lotions, perfume, or tonics. Collected pollen sacks can be grounded down to make capsules or skincare ingredient. Dehydrate for a longer shelf life and if not using immediately.
🕊medicinal benefits: chamomile has been praised for centuries for its calming properties. This includes calming of stomach and digestive issues, skin inflammation or irritation, and the mind. These days I suggest to sip chamomile tea while bathing in chamomile water and placing underneath your pillow to calm down 🤪 (kidding but Rosemary Gladstar would agree (look her work up!)). Folklorically, chamomile was thought to attract money and was therefore used as a hand rinse for gamblers.
This whimsically fragrant gentle giant is such a fun addition to the garden. Give her space to get weird with it and you’ll be rewarded. Do you have any experience with chamomile? We’d love to know 🕊
