Dachshunds were bred by farmers to fight badgers. Shar Pei are unique in that they have a purple tongue. German shepherds make excellent guide dogs and watchdogs. Armored mastiffs guarded travelers transporting their goods from town to town in the Middle Ages. Newfoundlands have webbed feet that make them excellent swimmers.
