We are the Humane Society of Barbour County, Alabama (HSBC). HSBC was founded in 1994 by Hank & Joy Bryan of Eufaula, AL. Joy Bryan believed it is our responsibility to help those who cannot help themselves. We strive daily to do just that by the way we care for the dogs and cats of Barbour County. Our Shelter Director, Tara Polli, is dedicated to making HSBC the leading animal welfare resource in

Barbour County. She ensures our shelter follows the animal sheltering guidelines while focusing on finding homes for our sheltered pets through adoption and transport rescue. She is able to do this with the support of Mellissa Howard and Amy Greer, the Animal Care Specialists, who help with the care of the shelter animals daily.

Dumped on the side of the road and left to fend for herself and her puppies, this poor momma dog was discovered by a long time and faithful follower of HSBC. Found while she was traveling on a back road, she just couldn’t leave these poor souls. Please help us get these babies and their momma vetted and ready for their next chapter. We sure would appreciate it.

Our CANS FOR CANINES is in full swing! Thanks so much to Ashley Galloway for jump starting our program with lots of cans and a container! Don’t forget, if you can’t make it out to our shelter to drop off your used cans, message us or call and leave a message. We would love to partner with local businesses too if you need too! New Year, new start, new goals. We are starting our New Year here at the shelter with a project that will not only benefit our animals but will help the environment as well. Introducing our CANS FOR CANINES project. If you, like us, have been looking for a way to recycle, here is your chance. Simply collect your empty cans and drop them off at our shelter. We will take care of the rest. We plan to partner with locations all over Barbour County to be designated drop off locations but for now, our drop off location will be our shelter and if you need assistance, message us. :)

A quick message to note that we have a few openings left for small dogs/puppies and cats for our first spay and neuter transport trip for the year. Drop off will be Wednesday, 3:30pm at our shelter. Message us for details or if you have a pet that needs to be fixed.

Two more tiny babies dumped. Thank goodness for shelter friend and supporter Eufaula Country Outdoors, LLC Licensed FFL, Eric Pomeroy who brought them in from the cold and had us go pick them up. Although they appear healthy, they are still tiny and will need bottle feeding and around the clock care for a few weeks. We are super low on kitten supplies. Any help would be appreciated.

These babies, we think they are girls, need:

Puppy pads
Newborn blankets
Kitten formula
Kitten wet food
Hot hands(found in the hunting section at Walmart. They last for hours and we put them under their blanket to keep them warm)

So we had another surprise today. This time while we were in the back cleaning and tending to our animals. This sweet girl was tied to a tree in our side yard. If one of our employees hadn’t been heading back inside from walking one of our dogs, we would have never saw her and she would have choked herself out from the cable that she was tied to the tree with. She had managed to wrap herself nearly to the tree with no wiggle room. Not cool.
We quickly assessed the situation and added her to the list of animals (all dumped animals) we were taking to the vet today. Initial vetting for five animals at once is terribly high. But everyone is stable. What a day. If anyone can help us with the additional cost of this sweet dog who is now named Merry, we sure would appreciate it.

So we had a surprise this morning when we arrived to the shelter. Actually three surprises. Thank goodness they took cover under our heating lamp that we keep for our stray cats we tend to. It was nasty weather out last night and we don’t know how long they were stranded outside our door. They are safe now. Clean, deflead, ticks removed, wormed and fed they will be fully vaccinated and vetted next. Puppies are expensive and this was an unexpected litter of puppies that need our help. Any help from our HSBC family would be very appreciated for their care and vetting.
