Humane Society of Barbour County - Alabama Our mission is to improve and save lives through compassionate care, community engagement and advocacy. We are located in Southeast Alabama.

We are the Humane Society of Barbour County, Alabama (HSBC). HSBC was founded in 1994 by Hank & Joy Bryan of Eufaula, AL. Joy Bryan believed it is our responsibility to help those who cannot help themselves. We strive daily to do just that by the way we care for the dogs and cats of Barbour County. Our Shelter Director, Tara Polli, is dedicated to making HSBC the leading animal welfare resource in

Barbour County. She ensures our shelter follows the animal sheltering guidelines while focusing on finding homes for our sheltered pets through adoption and transport rescue. She is able to do this with the support of Mellissa Howard and Amy Green, the Animal Care Specialists, who help with the care of the shelter animals daily.

For those who may not know, Susan and her husband Terry have been faithful supporters and contributors to the Humane Society of Barbour County for many, many years. As the Co Directors of our board, their support has been invaluable to our animals. To say they are avid animal lovers is a huge understatement. Pulled up to another surprise this morning. Five little kittens in a crate, shivering and covered in their own urine. Upon seeing them we didn’t know how long they had been out there in the crate. We have since found out that they were left here overnight since 1:45pm yesterday afternoon.
No one was here. They were left.
Needless to say we have them in a very warm room now trying to warm them up and they are very, very hungry so we are feeding them of course.

Thing is we are just about out of litter and hard cat/kitten food since we are still tending to all the kittens and cats that were dumped here last month. We need help. Our power bill is going up and up because we are needing to run space heaters in all these cat rooms now. If you can spare a little, we could sure use the help, desperately. Monetary donations can be sent using our links or supplies can be ordered and sent to our shelter directly. Thank you so much in advance and pray that these babies warm up.

On this last day of 2024 we want to reflect on the past year and thank our HSBC family for their support and love this past year and always.
We had many, many highs and many lows as well but we pushed thru and in doing so had a great year. We implemented new programs, added to existing programs and served the community in many ways this past year and are looking forward to 2025 and all of the adventures we will get into.
Most of all we are grateful we had the chance to help so many dogs and cats this year as well as responsible pet owners. Cheers to 2024!!! Here’s a look at just some of 2024 for you to enjoy!

Been trying since last week to catch the tuxedo kitty that ran from us when we took in the three, sick dumped kittens. We have not had any luck and haven’t even seen it again. 😞
But while trying to catch the tuxedo kitty we spied another sick tabby kitten. Tried since Monday to catch her and finally this morning we caught her! So now we have the four kittens, sick but on the mend. The first original three have finally started eating well. We will keep trying to catch the tuxedo kitten. 😞
Any donations towards their care sure would be appreciated. Thanks so much in advance!!! We continue to do what we love only with the generosity of our HSBC family and like all rescues and shelters, we need help in these trying times.

On this $5 dollar Friday we are in need. We pulled up to the shelter today to find 3 little kittens huddled next to one of our resident strays, under the heat lamp. All present with upper respiratory virus which includes eye issues. Upon further investigation, we found one more kitten but unfortunately it ran from us so we will have to set a trap and hope for the best. Since these babies were dumped we do not know if the total dumped was four or more. 😞

These babies need help with meds,which includes wormer, antibiotics and vaccines and than to be spayed or neutered of course.

We have to keep them in our office because we already have three rooms with cats/kittens and we can’t have them mingle with the others till they are healthy and fixed. So four rooms with cats it is.

If you can help with a few dollars on this $5 dollar Friday, we sure will appreciate it. The money continues to go out much quicker than it comes in. 😭

We had a great time at the Eufaula Christmas parade last night! It was the perfect weather for a parade!! Thanks to all who visited us and supported our efforts! The “Pupcorn” was a hit!

New Year, new start, new goals. We are starting our New Year here at the shelter with a project that will not only benefit our animals but will help the environment as well. Introducing our CANS FOR CANINES project. If you, like us, have been looking for a way to recycle, here is your chance. Simply collect your empty cans and drop them off at our shelter. We will take care of the rest. We plan to partner with locations all over Barbour County to be designated drop off locations but for now, our drop off location will be our shelter and if you need assistance, message us. :) Heres to a new year! Let's make it a good one!!
