What Is Dog Socialization?

Recognizing the signs of a poorly socialized dog early on means more time to train healthy behaviors when around other dogs and people.

Make sure your four-footed family members stay safe and warm by following these simple guidelines.

Keep pets sheltered -
Keep your pets inside with you and your family. If your dog is outdoors much of the day for any reason, they must be protected by a dry, draft-free shelter that is large enough to allow them to move comfortably, but small enough to hold in body heat. The floor should be raised a few inches from the ground and covered with cedar shavings or straw. The doorway should be covered with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.
Pets who spend a lot of time outdoors need more food in the winter because keeping warm depletes energy. Routinely check your pet's water dish to make certain the water is fresh and unfrozen. Use plastic food and water bowls; when the temperature is low, your pet's tongue can stick and freeze to metal.

Bundle up, wipe down-
No matter what the temperature is, wind-chill can threaten a pet's life. Exposed skin on noses, ears and paw pads are at risk for frostbite and hypothermia during extreme cold snaps. For this reason, short-haired dogs often feel more comfortable wearing a sweater—even during short walks.
Rock salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate the pads of your pet's feet. Wipe all paws with a damp towel before your pet licks them and irritates their mouth.

01/15/2025

Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention is important even in the winter because while these parasites may be less active in colder weather, they can still survive and become active during warmer spells, and even in milder climates, meaning your pet can still be exposed to them; additionally, fleas can easily live indoors year-round, and mosquitoes carrying heartworms can find sheltered areas to remain active during colder months, making year-round prevention crucial for your pet's health.
Key points about winter parasite prevention:
Tick activity:
Some tick species remain active in colder temperatures, and even if they are less common, a single bite can transmit serious diseases.
Flea survival:
Fleas can thrive indoors, where temperatures are warmer, and can easily re-infest your pet when conditions become favorable again.
Mosquito presence:
While less active, mosquitoes can still be present in milder winters, allowing for potential heartworm transmission.
Warm spells:
Even in colder climates, occasional warm days can trigger increased activity from fleas and ticks.
Protection against disease:
Preventing parasites year-round is the best way to protect your pet from potentially serious diseases they can carry.

With the very cold weather upon us please keep your pets safe! If you can’t bring them inside you need to provide them with a dry draft-free shelter with a raised floor. Consider getting a coat or sweater for them to wear. Protect their paws from salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice. Remember if it’s too cold for you it’s too cold for them!!

Things that you need to remember when getting a pet for Christmas:

Puppies and kittens are adorable as babies, but remember they do grow into adults.

Pets can be expensive. You have to be committed to providing Veterinary care, vaccines, prevention, and spay/neutering your pet. They are a financial commitment.

Pets require a lot of patience and training time. Potty training and obedience training can be very taxing. They can get into trouble quite often as babies.

Make sure you have time to devote to your pet. They need a lot of interaction and exercise.

We recommend pet insurance for all pets, but getting Insurance as a puppy or kitten is best, before there are any pre-existing conditions.

Pets are a lifelong commitment and we recommend that you are dedicated to being a part of your pet’s life for the entirety of their lives.
