Happy !

Better care means dogs and cats are living longer now than they ever have before—and, as pets get older, they need extra care and attention.

It's important to remember that age is not a disease. Although senior pets may develop age-related problems, you can help your pet live a happy, healthy, and active life in their senior years by providing for their physical, mental, and health care needs.

Regular veterinary examinations can detect problems in older pets before those problems become serious or life-threatening, which can lead to a longer, healthier life for your pet.

Pets today have a better chance of being successfully treated for neoplasia and cancer than they did before, thanks to advances in early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment.

Neoplasia is the uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells or tissues in the body, and the abnormal growth itself is called a neoplasm or tumor. It can be benign or malignant.
The word “tumor” or “mass” is often used to describe the actual swelling or other physical appearance of a neoplasm. The word “cancer” is often confused with neoplasia, but only malignant neoplasms are truly cancers.

Approximately 1 in 4 dogs will, at some stage in their life, develop neoplasia. Almost half of dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer. Dogs get cancer at roughly the same rate as humans, while there is less information about the rate of cancer in cats. Some cancers, such as lymphoma, are more common in cats than in dogs.

Diabetes mellitus, or diabetes, is a common, treatable condition in both people and certain pets that occurs when the body can’t use glucose (a type of sugar) normally.

Diabetes in dogs and cats may occur at any age. However, diabetic dogs are usually 4 to 14 years old, and most are diagnosed at roughly 7 to 10 years old. Most diabetic cats are older than 6 years. Diabetes occurs in female dogs twice as often as male dogs, and certain breeds of dogs and cats may be predisposed to the condition.

Fortunately, diabetic dogs and cats can live long, comfortable lives with appropriate treatment and monitoring. It all starts with a visit to your veterinarian and a commitment from you to take a few extra steps in caring for your pet.

Happy 🐾

We appreciate those animal shelters that step up and go above and beyond for the animals in their care (and rescues, too)!

If you are looking for a new furry family member, check out Clearlake and/or Lakeport Animal Control. Also, there are many rescue organizations in and around Lake County that have pets up for adoption.
