This is Pinocchio, (I had to name him) he has a beak that is a cull for me, it’s huge, and I don’t like it one bit, I like them much shorter, but…he has something I want to finish unraveling, after suspicions of a possible gene 🧬 we’ve been trying to uncover since some oddly colored birds popped up in a hatch that I felt should have had predictable results last Winter. This is the furthest Ive been able to break it down so far and Testing continues…
Back side looks similarly like Sparkly, but the chest is not. Suspicions are that this is what’s currently coined but not definitively named yet as AP or American Pansy in het form with Roux. Working with other awesome breeders to try and figure this out. Genetics is fun!

One of my color projects! The F1 generation is ready for sorting and I will be impatiently waiting to set eggs from these, as what I am trying to create won’t fully appear until the next generation… patience… I do love that these birds grow up fast!
Roughly three weeks out to set eggs, just over two weeks to hatch, then the wait to fully feather… Today marks the start of setting the coveys for the F2 generation!

This is a Bantam Cochin Roo that I am keeping my eye 👀 on, he’s in the running for next years breeders. Loving on his structure so far. Waiting on those tail feathers to fill in as one of his pen mates was picking at everyone’s feathers.

It took me a while to commit, as I wanted to make sure I was happy with the breed we chose to raise and took my sweet time sourcing out great stock. But! We finally registered our rabbitry! Loving on the standard Rex as a dual-purpose breed for the farm. We will also be lending some of the buns out to the 4H kids soon for them to be able learn about caring for these fluff nuggets. Also have some exciting breedings planned for the Fall, once this heat calms itself down!

Sorting Jumbo Sparkly grow outs this week! This lady is a ✨Sparkly Fee that we will be holding back for the breeding program, I’ll showcase some other color varieties from some of our other color pens this week, as it’s honestly hard to pick a favorite color. The docile, playful temperaments of this line is why I we love them so much.

This post is geared mostly for those residing in Florida, but those outside of Florida may find this information interesting as well so I thought I would share!

We are a licensed Game Farm, which means we have been inspected by Florida’s fish and wildlife commission in order to hold this license. In the state of Florida both native and non-native(Coturnix) quail are governed by FWC. In order for us to be allowed to offer live birds to the public or raise more than 100 birds we are required to have our farm inspected and pay the yearly fee.

**You are not required to have this license if you do not own more than 100 birds and/or you are not selling live birds.**

This information listed I pulled directly from FWC website at Myfwc.com. You can see listed in the photos some of the requirements they look for during inspection. The birds must have adequate shelter & housing, appropriate shade, predator protection, & sufficient space. These are general requirements that we recommend to anyone wanting to raise these beautiful birds even if just a small backyard flock.

We will be at the Folly Faire at Folly Farms in Safety Harbor, FL this Saturday 9am-12pm!

I will have a full list of the plants in tow on Friday evening! Some that I know will be coming along are:

White and red roselle AKA Florida cranberry-if you want your Florida cranberry sauce for thanksgiving this is last call to get these in the ground in time. Day length is shortening and these will be starting to flower.

Tindora-great cucumber flavored alternative, needs a trellis and recommended to be confined.

Bananas 🍌 4 varieties

Lavender double bloom butterfly pea-2 left

Canna Edulis-I have only 1 available, edible canna, great chop and drop plant.

Lots of tree starts, Pineapple gauva, sugar apples, & more.

Cool varieties of tropical houseplants including Thai cons, white princess, & more.

There’s room for all of us to succeed 💚

There’s room for all of us to succeed 💚

Wednesday morning musings.

Someone asked me yesterday why I shared the post about Southern Biophilliac Urban Farm’s new Roux Pansy line.

“Aren’t they your competition?”

That’s a legitimate question.

My answer actually comes in part from Michael Rose from Southwest Gamebirds. Michael once told me, “there are enough pieces of the quail pie for everyone”.

This was while Michael and I were collaborating on Black Coturnix. When Micheal found out I had been working on Blacks at the same time he was, he had two choices. Tear me down or collaborate. From that, a friendship was born that I value immensely and hope to maintain, even if one or both of us someday get out of quail.

Lea Kulas of Southern Biophilliac is a friend of mine. She’s not only a friend, but a colleague and darn good breeder. So I’m proud to help her achieve her goals and launch a highly-anticipated new line.

I believe in colleagues, not competition.

And as for those I may not be friends with? There’s enough of that quail pie to go around. There’s no reason to cut others down. Their business practices and breeding programs will speak for themselves. If people like what they have to sell, they’ll buy more. If they don’t, they’ll buy elsewhere.

Same for me. I strive each day to be worthy of your business and respect. My breeding speaks for itself. My integrity speaks for itself. If I don’t do well, you’ll go elsewhere. It’s up to me to be a good breeder to keep you coming back.

So, if you’ve made it this far in reading my soapbox post of the day, drop a link in the comments with a blurb about your farm/homestead/business. Let’s network together and lift each other up!

We LOVE hearing about your hatch results! Congrats to Mandy our 3k Sparkly G!veaway winner on her hatch!
