♥️💗Denali’s ‘Be My Valentine’
Annual Gotcha DayCelebration💗♥️

Can you believe it’s Denali’s 6th gotcha day anniversary? Each year in February, to honor Denali’s survival, resilience and triumph over being burned by her former owner, we celebrate!

In 2018 Denali spent 16 days in the ICU at Blue Pearl, suffering from 3rd degree chemical burns over 40% of her body. She endured surgeries, bandage changes, multiple IV catheters with several different antibiotics and pain medications, and then once released, two more months of medications and bandage changes until she was medically cleared to be adopted on Valentines Day 2019.

To pay it forward to her friends at Suncoast Animal League for saving her life, each year she becomes the hostess of a very special fundraiser themed around love 💕 Join us as we raise money for Suncoast Animal League so they can continue to help pups & kitties like Denali that need specialized medical care.

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of a man with a DREAM. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a visionary leader whose efforts helped change the world. MLK Day 2002 is also the day I discovered my lump after doing a self-check.
I was at a conference in Vegas the weekend before MLK Day and a lady had shown me a keychain with different sized beads. The beads were visual representations of what tumors and stages of breast cancer could look like. I didn't really understand the concept of how a tumor might feel until I saw the visual of this keychain depicting round, hard beads in various sizes.
That Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I had the day off and while l laid in bed, I thought to myself at 40 years old, next month I’ll be getting my first mammogram. I thought of that keychain and decided to do a self-check and that’s when I felt it - something hard.
I chose not to wait until February for my mammogram appointment and instead called my doctor. That Wednesday, he verified he could feel something too and the next day I had my first mammogram. Nothing showed up on that mammogram. A dark, dense mass was finally visible after an ultrasound was performed. A needle biopsy was conducted to take a tissue sample and by that next Monday I knew I had breast cancer.
I call my friend from that conference my lifesaver because it was truly the visual and that conversation that saved my life. If I waited until my February mammogram appointment and not done that self-check at home, then I’m not sure I would be alive today.
Inspired by my experience and that little keychain, I was determined to find a way to educate and save others and thus, 11 years later, my vision of Knotty Girl Loves was born. My DREAM is that our mission will be taken seriously as 40% of diagnosed breast cancers are detected by women who feel a lump during self-checks. This is especially important for women under the age of 40 who aren’t yet getting regular mammograms. Men also benefit from self-checks as 1 in 726 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
May we all continue to fight for our DREAMS and thank you all for being a part of mine 🫶
