Hello,

We wanted to reach out and let everyone know that we have made the hard decision to end our public lesson program. We will still be offering lessons with Cheyenne for boarders or haul-ins for people that have their own horses.

We have loved teaching each and every one of our students over these wonderful 6 years. Thank you for the time spent with us and for trusting us with your beloved children. It has truly been a dream fulfilled to help create more equestrians in a world that desperately needs to know the love of a horse.

As we venture into new things, we just want to say "Thank you!". Thank you to every family that has supported my dream over the years. There will never be enough "thank yous" to explain how blessed and lucky I am to share what I love so deeply with you all.

Happy Riding,
Cheyenne Perry šŸ’›

How cold is too cold to ride? Better safe than sorry, equine respiratory issues are terrible to deal with and take a long time to heal. šŸ’—

How cold is too cold to ride?

Letā€™s start with your horseā€™s respiratory tract. The horseā€™s respiratory tract is designed to warm and humidify air by the time air reaches the lungs. Intense exercise (anything more than a walk) speeds up and deepens breaths so that air is not as warm or humid when it reaches the lungs which can cause damage to the lower respiratory tracts. It has been discovered in multiple studies that respiratory tracts in horses can become damaged by breathing cold air starting around 23 degrees Fahrenheit, damage to lower respiratory tracts was found 48 hours after exercise, including elevated white blood cell counts and inflammatory proteins as well as narrowing of the tracts.

Moving on to your horseā€™s cardiovascular system (heart). The cardiovascular system react to cold by increasing the blood pressure and heart rate. It also reduces the amount of blood that flows closest to the skin in order to preserve core body temperature. The reduced blood flow to the skin can lead to frostbite. This lack of blood leads to the eventual freezing and death of skin tissue in the affected areas. Again, it is probably wise to reduce the intensity of your ride so that your horseā€™s heart does not have to work so hard.

And last but not least your horseā€™s muscles and joints. Muscles take longer to warm up in the cold weather and arthritic joints may ache and need more time to loosen up. During exercise in the cold, your horseā€™s muscles require more energy at a faster rate in order for them to function as they would under less extreme conditions. The cold temperature effects the temperature of your horseā€™s muscles greatly affecting the musclesā€™ ability to contract. This can leave muscles more vulnerable to fatigue and strains, as cold muscles are less elastic and donā€™t absorb shock or impact as well as warm muscles. Cold muscles are also less responsive to signals from the nervous system so movements are less coordinated.

So in conclusion it is best to avoid exercise (trotting, cantering and jumping) when temperatures are under 20 degrees F, stick with walking and make sure to properly cool your horse down.

Hello Everyone!
We will not be taking on anymore lesson students through Jan and February of 2021. For everyone that has inquired about lessons, our program stays very full and we have a waiting list. Lesson priority will be given to people wanting to haul-in with their own horses for lessons going forward.

With this update, we will be taking in a couple more stall boarders. We also do not have openings for boarding often, so if you are interested in getting a boarding spot, now would be a great time before the weather gets bad.

Horse Training Frame of Mind

My ultimate goal in horse training is to teach and show a horse how to enjoy their job. I focus on a training method that helps horses to understand a working partnership with their riders through soft, subtle and quiet cues. Not matter how old or young you are, I can help you be the leader that your horse desires you to be. I believe in a training method that teaches a horse how to be quiet, calm, soft, receptive, and responsive. Once a horse leaves my program, it is equally important to help the rider be in tune with the responsiveness that is created in training so the horse can continue positive. I not only desire to teach your horse, but teach YOU how to continue the education that your horse receives. It is very important to be a part of your horseā€™s training. Everything we do as humans, teaches our equine partners something. I want that learning to be positive, which is why, the owner plays a vital role in training. I love to have owners included and give knowledge on the reasoning behind what I am training horses to do. Communication is key! I will help you tune into what you are communicating with your horse through your body, tone of voice, energy, and attitude.

Ground work is an extremely big part of a horses' foundation and is also a tool to fix a majority of problems that arise from a panic or anxiety filled horse. I have a dedication to be the best horsewomen that I can be, and I am devoted to continuing education. I believe you can never stop learning!
