A strong “leave it” can be a safety issue. It can literally be the difference between life and death for your dog. Think about the pill you accidentally drop on the floor. Or the squirrel that runs across the street in front of your dog with intense prey instincts. Or your dog that likes to pick up and ingest all the trash along the road in a walk. A strong “leave it” could save their life or at the very least prevent at trip to the vet.
Here, Bailey is starting the process of learning the command by disengaging with the treats in Grace’s hand when she gives her the “leave it” command and is rewarded from the other hand.
