foundered horse is one that has suffered from laminitus which alters the shape of the foot. Although an x-ray is needed to show the severity of this it can be diagnosed by the outward appearance of the foot. The hoof will develop ridges and develop a concave front and the sole will drop, this is because of the rotation of the lowest bone in the hoof; the coffin bone. Most will be lame some of the time but a knowledgeable farrier can help the horse be more comfortable and even remain working depending on the treatment and severity.These equines will need regular and specialized hoof trimming and/or shoeing to help them be more comfortable.
