I’ve made a similar post before, but I wanted to take the time to explain in more detail, 3 BIG differences between our gourmet mushrooms, and traditional button mushrooms from big box grocery stores.

1. Our Substrate (what our mushrooms grow on; mushrooms don’t grow in soil like plants, they need to grow on decaying matter like a fallen over tree since they are fungi).

We use Organic Alfalfa Hay, as seen in the top right of the first picture, combined with locally and sustainably sourced hardwood from the Allegheny Mountains. The alfalfa has a very high nitrogen content, which results in high quality mushrooms. I believe the organic aspect increases the shelf life, as I have had some last upwards of 2 weeks in the fridge! Most will start to go bad within 5-7 days either due to bacteria forming on the mushrooms, or botulism, “when they get slimy”, which can be FATAL. Never eat a slimy raw mushroom.

A majority of all button, cremini, and portabella mushrooms from stores are grown on straw (the bi-product of a grain crop, lacking any nutritious value), and animal manure. Yes, p**p. This is required because the straw has no nutritional value, so these mushrooms obtain their nutrition from what’s left in the p**p. Most of the animal manure used does not come from organically raised livestock, rather from animals that where fed conventional feed and given hormones and antibiotics throughout their life. I truly believe the mushrooms leach these toxins from the manure, as they have been proven in numerous studies to remove 99% of oil contamination from soil, go read up on or watch Fantastic Fungi on Netflix. There is NO WAY that these conventional store bought mushrooms are free of these toxins, I simply will never believe it.

So, the “dirt” you’re rinsing off your button mushrooms is really just p**p.

2. Our packaging is made in the USA, and is a fully recyclable paper container. The paper sticker label is recyclable as well. Most traditional button mushrooms are sold in a non-recyclable styrofoam container or tray, with non-recyclable plastic wrap, and a non-recyclable vinyl sticker.
