Happy Saturday from Bear! 🧸

If this cute pup looks familiar, it’s because he is Atlas’ relative, and was featured in Sunny’s board and train post. Bear is a 1.5 year old mixed breed that came to us from Columbus to complete his board and train. Bear spent three weeks with trainer Jess to work on confidence building, how to walk on leash, crate training and anxiety, and jumping.

Bear was a little nervous upon arrival but quickly warmed up to our staff. Jess reported that Bear was always eager to work and picked up on a lot of training exercises quickly. The biggest hurdle in Bear’s training was overcoming his anxiety. Living in Columbus, there is a lot of city noise including cars, bikes flying by, construction, etc., which Bear was struggling to adjust to. Instead of labeling Bear as uncomfortable, his parents decided to invest in training and teach him to navigate and manage the discomfort.

Bear is an extremely social dog, so Jess used that to her advantage while working him around distractions. Jess often had Bear observe or interact with another confident dog to help show him the ropes. One big pro to the board and train is having access to a lot of predictable, stable dogs that will help your dog through their training journey.

Bear is back home and has been doing great with his family and the dogs they foster. Now that Bear has gone through training, he can be an excellent role model for the fosters that come through their home.

Sunny ☀️

This blue eyed pup is an 8 month old Husky that recently completed a two part (yes, you read that correctly) board and train and is officially home! Sunny’s mom, Jackie, reached out about training for Sunny as soon as she brought her home. Jackie wanted a well behaved dog and recognized the importance of implementing training at such an impressionable age.

When Jackie and Sunny arrived for their assessment, Sunny was only a few months old, but Jackie mentioned wanting Sunny to be ecollar trained, off leash reliable, good manners in public, and being able to walk on the treadmill. After Jess and Jackie discussed Sunny’s age and training goals, the two part board and train was decided. This way we would be able to start with foundational skills and layer the ecollar over those skills later when Sunny had some time to mature.

The biggest hurdle Jess faced with Sunny was her low food drive. Huskies as a breed generally do not have the highest food drive, but Jess was able to tap into Sunny’s other interests, such as her play and toy drive. Once Jess began hand feeding Sunny, having her work for meals, and offering toys as rewards, Sunny was enthusiastic to work.

Sunny is a true testament that foundational training is key to a dog’s long-term success. At only 8 months old she was eager to work, dog and people social, and even was able to help Jess as a distraction dog in a few 1:1 sessions.

Are you interested in a board and train but unsure your puppy is at the right age? Please reach out! We’d love to help build a unique training program to fit the needs of you and your dog.

Pork ❤️

Pork 1 year old Mastiff that first came to us in April of 2024 when his family realized their shelter dog was not outgrowing his skittish behavior. When Pork wasn’t hiding from his family he was chasing the cats, getting into things he shouldn’t, trying to climb the fence, and picking fights with their senior dog.

When Pork came for his assessment he was beyond scared. He would not allow Paige to approach, tried to climb over the fence, defecated, and hid in a corner. Pork was an extremely insecure and undersocialized dog, so building trust was a must before any true training could begin. Pork spent his summer coming in for day training sessions to establish a relationship with Paige and to learn the routines and other staff members at Turning Point.

Pork arrived for his board and train in October and the work began. Pork’s first week was spent establishing trust, building a relationship, and learning the basics of being a dog. Within a week Pork was opening up and playing with Paige and no longer hiding in the corner of his kennel when techs came to care for him. Our structured daycare really allowed Pork to open up and be a dog around other well socialized pups. He quickly learned that we were a group he could trust.

Pork’s board and train may not have ended with crazy off leash hikes, family road trips, or fancy obedience, instead it ended with a more confident dog and a family who is better able to communicate and better understand their timid dog. That is the true purpose behind training dogs and helping owners.

There is no better feeling than watching a dog go from complete panic to play bowing every time he sees you. Pork has quickly become a staff favorite and we are looking forward to welcoming him back for boarding next month.

We haven’t officially introduced him, but everyone knows Atlas by his signature grin.

Atlas is an 8 month old mixed breed (Great Dane? Pittie? Lab?) who was adopted by his parents, Amanda and Jake. Neither of Atlas’ parents had any behavioral concerns, but they wanted to set Atlas up for success when it came to overcoming those nuisance puppy behaviors. Atlas showed typical mouthing, jumping, and leash pulling which are all typical for a dog of his age. Amanda and Jake also wanted to work on socialization so Atlas wouldn’t be an obnoxious new addition to his two Daschund sisters.

Jess spent three weeks with this eager guy working through basics, teaching him to settle, and working on proper socialization with other dogs. The best part of working with Atlas is his goofy personality. He can always find a way to put a smile on your face. The hardest part of working with Atlas was showing him how to remain calm and neutral with other dogs. Atlas is a super social guy but wasn’t always the most polite or best at picking up social cues.

Atlas has been doing great at his follow up sessions, has attended a few structured daycare days, and his parents have even scheduled a few day training days. We love being able to share Atlas’ unmistakable face with all his new Turning Point fans!

Meet Athena & Heinz!

These young pups recently participated in the two week board and train program offered to clients who have already completed a training package. Athena and Heinz are very similar in their strengths, weaknesses, and overall training path, so we thought we would introduce them together.

Athena completed training with Jess as a puppy where she excelled with her foundational training. As she grew into adulthood, Athena’s parents felt it would be beneficial to continue her training to refine her obedience and layer the ecollar over what she knows.

Heinz completed puppy training with another local trainer, but his parents found that the group setting was not one that Heinz thrived in. They reached out to complete another round of one-on-one training with Paige. After a handful of sessions, his parents concluded that a board and train may be the best route for Heinz so we could introduce the ecollar over his known commands.

Athena and Heinz are smart dogs that enjoy working, but their behavior and mindset often made it difficult to see that side of them. Athena was anxious and whiny, while Heinz demonstrated over exuberant puppy behavior in a 90 lbs. Body. Although their behaviors manifested differently, each dog was in need of building a calm mindset and healthier ways to channel their energy.

Jess and Paige worked hard to further solidify down stays, long downs, and place before layering the ecollar over the commands. Once the dogs had a solid understanding of expectations, the ecollar was layered over to help hold Athena and Heinz accountable for their behavior. A big part of their training was also teaching their guardians how to utilize these commands in a way that felt purposeful and effective. For example, a place command for 15 minutes before a walk, followed by threshold manners before leaving is a great way to address the excitement or anxiety of the transition.

Meet our November Client Spotlight, Daphne 😍

Daphne is a 2 year old Pitbull that lives in Cleveland with her mom, Ellen. This duo recently completed an 8 session package with Jess to address leash reactivity, destructive behaviors, and having some issues pop up at a traditional doggy daycare. While our favorite part of Daphne is her long haired ears, Ellen said her favorite part is how much Daphne loves to cuddle.

Ellen’s goals for Daphne were walking nicely on leash, a solid recall, and properly socializing with other dogs. The most valuable thing Ellen has learned during Daphne’s training is how to properly read her body language and social cues to build her confidence. We see it often where a handler misreads their dog, causing reactivity and insecurity to spike. Although colder weather is approaching, Daphne and Ellen continue to work on Daphne’s off leash recall to keep her safe on their hiking endeavors.

“We love Turning Point, came for the training and stayed for the daycare!”

We’re doing something a little different for our October Client Spotlight and introducing some of our staff dogs!

Our staff dogs are often seen helping the daycare dogs break out of their shell, acting as a distraction in 1:1 sessions, or modeling expectations for some of our board and trains.

Raven & Jude
Raven is a six year old Lab mix and Jude is a 10 year old German Shepherd owned by owner/trainer Anthony and his wife, Anna. Raven and Jude are big travelers thanks to their parents’ camper van and have visited 30 states!

Miko, Do**us, Diaz, Shigaraki, and Sanji
Our biggest pack of the staff belongs to Kel, who is often found running our morning structured daycare. Doof is a huge help bringing some of the more undersocialized dogs out of their shell and getting them to interact with the pack. Sanji is Kel’s newest addition who will be joining us for more daycare as he gets older.

August, Ekko, and Ruca
This trio is owned by trainer, Jess, and her partner, Adam. Augie is an 11 year old Mountain Cur mix who has completed over 25+ backpacking trips. Ekko is a 2 year old, blind Pittie Mix. Although Ekko is blind, her can still keep up with his two canine siblings and even picked up his CGC this summer! Ru is an estimated 13 year old Pittie Mix whose favorite activity is sleeping in IKEA bags.

Maisey & Roxy
Maisey and Roxy are owned by our kennel tech, Andrea. Maisey is often found alongside Doof helping socialize some of our daycare dogs. Outside of structured daycare, Maisey enjoys scent work or requesting belly rubs from the nearest person. Roxy is a 12 year old Shepherd mix who loves agility and tracking small woodland creatures.

Winston
The smallest (but arguably most vocal) staff dog is Winston, owned by trainer Paige and her husband, Zack. Winston is a 6.5 year old hound mix who enjoys competing in scent work and flyball. Winston is a big fan of hiking, vacationing with his parents, and sunbathing.

Not sure how to navigate Halloween? We’ve got you covered!

Dogs are individuals that require different approaches to successfully navigate Halloween. There is nothing wrong with having a dog who prefers to stay inside and snack on a Kong while another wags their tail from their place cot as trick or treaters approach.

Remember to meet your dog where they are this holiday season. Twenty minutes of focused training is better than one hour of disorganized training.

Happy Halloween! 🎃

Happy Tuesday from Henry

This 2 year old Goldendoodle has been home for almost three weeks and is being the very best boy for his mom. Henry came to us for a board and train for leash reactivity, along with mouthing and jumping. Henry is a good example of a dog who never “outgrew” those puppy behaviors because he was never taught to stop doing the behavior. Once Jess began providing clear instruction to Henry, his behavior fell into place.

Nuala, Henry’s mom, found that Henry was extremely social and loved to be out and about, but struggled to maintain his composure. Nuala wanted a more calm and balanced attitude from Henry so she could enjoy their outings as well. Proper socialization was crucial to Henry’s success on these outings. By attending pack walks, working around other neutral dogs, and participating in daycare, Henry was able to learn and maintain the skills needed to politely interact with others.

We’ve gotten quite a few updates from Nuala on Henry’s behavior. He is much calmer and thoughtful with his actions, leading to a better relationship with his mom.

This cute dood is our September client spotlight!

Meet Brodie, an 11 month old Bernedoodle who just moved to Boston with his parents, Alyssa and Ben. If your dog has ever attended our structured daycare, chances are they’ve met Brodie. Alyssa said her favorite thing about Brodie is how social he is, whether it be with people, dogs, or other animals. If Brodie were a person it would be safe to consider him the life of the party. Brodie recently wrapped up one-on-one sessions with our trainer, Jess.

When Alyssa and Ben started training, their goal was for Brodie to be comfortable and behaved in any environment. They wanted Brodie to have a sense of independence, while also being able to follow their lead when asked. They continue to put a large emphasis on Brodie’s place command as he learns to politely greet new people and hold place while people move around him. Brodie has blossomed into a confident, well rounded, obedient adolescent pup due to his parent’s diligence.

Alyssa said the most important thing she learned during training is that consistency and patience are very important: “Training doesn’t stop after they learn a new skill or command, you have to keep reinforcing and practicing that behavior.”

“We are so grateful for Turning Point and the staff there. They helped Brodie learn so much, and helped us learn how to better encourage and train Brodie. We couldn’t be happier with our experience there, and truly Brodie was never more excited than the days he got to go see his friends at Turning Point.”

Good luck in Boston, Brodie!
