The goofiest, most expressive boy has made his way back to Columbus
Pluto is a 4 year old hound mix who completed a three week board and train to address some nuisance behaviors such as directional disputes on walks, attention barking, struggling to settle or do certain commands when asked, and bolting out the door. Pluto is a perfect example that training is not only for unruly or bad dogs - training can help bridge the gap between dog and handler communication and give your dog the best life possible in their environment.
Although a very sweet dog, Pluto would simply disregard what was asked from him if he felt it did not serve him. For example, Pluto would stop walking and plant himself if he felt his walk was ending too early or he did not want to walk down a certain street. In addition, Pluto would continuously pull on walks, sometimes trying to work his way into the street which can be dangerous. Brooke and Andy, Pluto’s parents, were becoming frustrated with Pluto’s behavior as it felt like he was starting to dictate many of their interactions.
Dogs like Pluto can be tricky because firm and fair are the name of the game but it can be a very fine line. We chose to focus on celebrating the small wins with Pluto and slowly building up a stricter winning criteria. We also noted a big shift in Pluto behavior when we transitioned from the harness to the starmark and ecollar. Pluto is the textbook definition of a dog that responds well to the on/off method of leash pressure. Sometimes a change in equipment is the missing link to a better behaved dog.
Brooke and Andy are extremely dedicated dog parents and truly want the best for Pluto. He is a very lucky boy to have parents that take the time to understand him, his new training, and how to get him to seamlessly blend into their lifestyle. We’ll miss seeing Pluto and his hilarious side-eye!

Congratulations to our Novice Trick Class students on passing their TKN!
Meet the Trainers: Paige, Jess, and Anthony
Chances are you’ve met the whole training crew, but if not, here is your chance! Having multiple trainers on our staff is not something we envisioned a short five years ago, but we’ve truly built up the best team.

Accepting New Boarding Clients
We’ve seen how beneficial opening our daycare services to new clients has been so we’d like to extend our boarding services to non-clients as well. Our boarding experience includes:
● A personal boarding experience with only 8 dogs in our care at a time
● Daily exercise, training session and/or play group
● Large indoor and outdoor spaces for daily exercise no matter the weather
● Climate controlled kennel room
● Medication administration
● Spacious kennels
If you have a dog that is not outwardly social, needs more work with socialization, or is dog reactive, our boarding program was made with you in mind.
In order to book boarding, new clients must complete an overnight stay to evaluate your dog’s behavior and ensure this is the best fit for them. The cost of the evaluation is $70 for the night. To schedule your dog’s evaluation, please email Anthony: [email protected]

When clients come for an assessment, we always ask what short and long term goals they have for their dog. This helps us choose the appropriate tools and training package, which allows us to craft the perfect training plan for your dog.
When Jazymne first came for training, her family said they would love to certify her as a therapy dog. We spent a large chunk of Jazymne’s sessions solidifying her obedience commands, moved onto working her in outdoor spaces, then finished up with a mock Therapy/Canine Good Citizen test. In this video, Jazymne is working on her loose leash heel with minimal rewards and leash corrections, as those are not allowed in either test.
If earning your dog’s Canine Good Citizen title is one of your goals, we’d love to help you get started. While we do not offer CGC testing (yet), both Paige and Anthony have experience with the test.

Why is the heel command so important?
Heel is one of our favorite commands because it is a great way for handlers to establish leadership with their dog. By teaching our dogs a proper heel command (their nose behind your leg), we are asking dogs to follow behind us, making us the leader. By continuously practicing, your dog will realize that you are not leading them into stressful situations, but advocating for them as you confront and make all the decisions first. The goal is that your dog will choose to look at you for guidance rather than react in a way that we often find frustrating. Changing how your dog views you and the rest of the world is a game-changer for dog training.
One of the more obvious reasons people teach a heel command is for loose leash walking. Nothing is more aggravating than having your dog pull you in every which way on walks. By teaching a heel command, you will have more control over your walk, and your dog will start to learn the boundary of the leash.
Lastly, heeling is a great command to have for emergency or dangerous situations. For example, if you live near a busy intersection and need to cross the street, having your dog in a heel can keep them safe as humans are often more visible to motorists than dogs. Additionally, teaching a heel command allows for your body to act as a buffer between other dogs, wildlife, etc.
Why did you teach your dog to heel?

Now that you’ve had some time to practice you’re luring, let’s begin applying it to our training.
In this video, Paige and Winston are modeling how you can utilize luring in a variety of ways. First, Paige is simply walking and getting Winston to follow that lure. If your dog is not able to follow a lure as you walk, that’s okay! Remember to take it slow and work at your dog’s speed. To build distance and speed, try taking slow and exaggerated steps.
Next, Paige begins luring Winston to the place cot. Again, following your dog’s speed is crucial when sending them to place using a lure. If you go too quickly, your dog may fall behind the lure and lose interest in the lure or the cot. Using a lure is a great way to familiarize your dog with the place cot while teaching them how to be sent to place.
In the last video, you will see Paige luring Winston onto a table with a ramp. Luring is also a great tool when introducing new objects or teaching body awareness. While you might not have a table like this at home, you can use a lure to lure your dog onto playground equipment, different surfaces, or things they may not immediately love. This will also help build a dog’s confidence to new objects or surfaces.
Did you learn something new about luring? How do you use a lure in your training?

Your leash is one of the most powerful tools in dog training.
The leash often acts as an extension of the handler’s arms; picking up on our slight shifts in body language and movement. Whether you realize it or not, you are always communicating with your dog through the leash.
We often tell our clients to keep a U-shaped slack in the leash for multiple reasons. First, walking with this much slack will help absorb any small movements the handler makes while walking.
Second, this amount of slack will ensure your dog is walking in a proper heel and you aren’t micromanaging every time your dog takes one tiny step ahead. Letting your dog think for a moment and correct themselves is such an important skill!
Lastly, keeping this much slack in the leash gives YOU more control over your dog. Think about it this way: how would you feel if someone was holding you back when you were trying to run after a winning lottery ticket? Adding tension to your leash makes your dog feel just as frustrated! By maintaining some slack in your leash your dog will be in a more calm and collected mindset, allowing you more control over your dog in case a distraction or trigger arises.
We challenge you to make notes about your leash handling when you walk your dog this weekend!
