It's been a loooong cold freeze at the farm this month, and harder than usual to find any remaining signs of green. While things are quiet in the fields and high tunnels, our admin team has been hard at work preparing all of the details for this year's crop plan, CSA program, and use of our new building. We're easing into 2025 slowly but soon you'll be seeing a lot more of us in your feed! Hope you're staying warm, friends. 💚

Ohio City Farm's new Roundstone Pavilion is coming to life on Bridge Avenue! Remarkable progress has been made on the site over the past 3 months, reflecting the exceptional collaboration between contractor Independence Construction and our architects at Young Design Studio LLC as well as the hard work of the talented tradespeople working through all kinds of Cleveland weather. Pictured here is recent photo of the building's progress below a rendering of the finished building.

We are incredibly grateful to the major funders and partners on this project, including Roundstone, The Glick Family, The Reinberger Foundation, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland City Council, Finance Fund, The George Gund Foundation, DIGERONIMO, Eric Kennedy, Andy & Kathy Moock, Cynthia Parker Matthews Family Foundation, Dudley & Barbara Sheffler Family Foundation, and The Higley Fund.

In a stroke of good luck, our final CSA shares of the season were distributed last week just before the deep freeze, snow, and high winds arrived! The team really hung in there prepping and packing veggies with cold hands (and only a space heater inside a hoop house for warmth) so we could share this last fall harvest with our awesome members. Last week we officially wrapped up our 2024 growing season with our annual team planning meeting, where we all share our thoughts about what went well this season and what could have gone better. (This year, everyone was bummed about lackluster onion transplants and aggressive aphids. ) We look through seed and supply catalogs and brainstorm about ways we'd like to make next year an even better experience for our team and customers. (Spoiler alert-- we're really really excited about what's to come.)

Wow. As of today, we have distributed more than 3,900 pounds of FREE fresh vegetables and herbs to those experiencing food insecurity in our community this year. A portion of this is from CSA shares that are not picked up in a given week, and the rest is food that we grow specifically for this purpose. Our donations, from zesty arugula to crisp juicy carrots and everything in between, are combined with staples from the and distributed by the Food as Medicine Clinic each week. We launched our Farm-to-Community Food Donation Program when the pandemic hit in 2020 and have continued it ever since! Dollars donated on our website (link in bio) help us to continue growing food for our neighbors in need while also supporting fair wage employment for our team of farmers.

Incredible progress is being made on the Roundstone Pavilion thanks to the construction team's dedication--even in today's blustery wet conditions! The project team at Independence Construction has been fantastic to work with, taking great care to ensure our operations could continue throughout the project, and we're so grateful to their whole staff and contractors as well as our architects .

Today is opening day of our 2022 farm stand season, and @news5cleveland's Katie Ussin visited to chat about our farm's mission and our hopes for the future as we transform to welcome the future Irishtown Bend Park. You're welcome back any time, @katie_ussin_wews! Find a link to the full feature in our stories. Starting today, our farm stand will be open every Saturday 9am-noon until Thanksgiving. Find our purple shipping container stand at the intersection of W 24th & Bridge Ave in Ohio City. Cash, card, and WIC FMNP and SFMNP vouchers accepted.

It's time for us to take a little social media break until the new year! Thank you for following along in 2021--we're wishing warmth, good food and good health for you and yours as we pass the winter solstice this week and reach the end of another year. Our holiday gift sales have ended (though you can still purchase CSA shares in our online store) and if you purchased a gift set but have not yet collected it, we will have open pick up hours at the @refugeeresponse office on Monday and Tuesday from 11-5. Stay safe out there, friends. 💚

We promise, there are huge smiles under these masks! The farm has a current need for a few more volunteers to assist with our farm stand and CSA distribution on Saturdays from 9:15 to 1:15. Volunteers must be able to commit to being available most (if not all) Saturdays from now until Thanksgiving and will receive a weekly CSA share in return. We’re testing out a new Friday produce stand location this week! Find us outside the new MetroHealth clinic at the Urban Community School campus, 4757 Lorain Ave, from 3-6pm on Friday. As the UCS campus is also the future home of the @refugeeresponse offices, we’re excited to share some of our produce with those who live and work in the neighborhood. Stop by tomorrow for the freshest produce in the Land!
