What's in a Fall CSA Share? This is a frequently asked question and we're glad you asked! Our CSA shares always contain a wide variety of veggies and herbs grown here at the farm and the contents of a share evolve over the season based on what's fresh and ready for harvest in our fields and high tunnels. The first weeks of our Fall CSA often catch the end of "summer" produce like peppers and beans, then include lots of cool weather greens like lettuces, kale, collards and bok choy, root crops like radishes, carrots and beets, along with items like garlic and onions, herbs, and microgreens. Just a shoutout to the best team of farmers! Sunday is the autumn equinox, and lately the crew has worked very hard to get fall plantings completed while still tending all of our summer crops still being harvested each week for CSA members, restaurants, and community donation. Friends, we are under construction! The farm will be closed to the public until further notice as we break ground on our new building. If you have a booked a private tour, don't worry-- we will still be conducting scheduled tours during the construction process but are closed to all other visitors at this time. We look forward to welcoming you back to see our new building in the near future! NOTE FOR CSA MEMBERS: Construction should not affect your share pickups which will continue as usual.

The flower CSA somehow keeps getting better every year and every single bouquet is the best one yet. Just look at the colors in our cooler this week! 😍
Did you know that cilantro and coriander are the same plant? Here in the US "coriander" refers to the dry seeds of a cilantro plant that has been allowed to flower. Here at OCF we harvest some of our cilantro for the fresh herb, and let some of it go to flower so we can harvest the coriander seeds like Safi is showing here. We'll let them dry fully and then likely distribute some to our CSA members for cooking and save some to plant next year.
It's LONG BEAN SEASON! 🎉 A couple of weeks makes a big difference for bean plants--we posted a photo two weeks ago of these same plants before they started producing blooms, and now they're loaded with beans! CSA members will start receiving these tasty treats in shares this week, along with recipes for putting them to use.
An exuberant celebration of the end of August in produce form: CSA Week 13. This week's shares included carrots, sweet yellow onions, curly kale, eggplant, tomatoes, mini cabbages, Jalapenos, green beans, bell peppers, zucchini, and shish*to peppers.
Our East side CSA setup practically overflowing in the store at this evening. 😍 (Seriously though, please be careful with these very tall stacks of veggie boxes; there are many more rows behind the ones you can see here.😬) FOUR of our team members loaded all of this up today and took it to Van Aken while Michael (our senior farm manager and usual solo East side delivery hero) was unavailable and Michael, we have a new appreciation for you!!

A hot hot harvest for a hot hot day, these Thai chili peppers are on our team's favorite crops list every year.
Feeding our community is an honor. This summer OCF produce is distributed weekly to 280 CSA member families who have purchased a share of the season's harvests PLUS we have been sending hundreds of pounds of produce to the Food as Medicine Clinic to be distributed to their patients experiencing food insecurity at no cost. In addition, you might see our produce pop up on restaurant menus around the city!

Extending our growing (and therefore working) season has been an important goal at the farm and we are proud to now be able to operate our CSA program for a full half of the year (26 weeks)!
Our farm team currently goes on furlough for three months over the winter, but that used to be much longer. With your support of our season extension endeavors like the Fall CSA program, we plan to continue shrinking that furlough until the day our whole team is employed year round if they so choose.

The sun is shining, a breeze is blowing, and the dirt is flying as we make the most of this gorgeous weather to continue planting fall crops like these lettuces. Fall was absolutely in the air this morning in Cleveland!
This Saturday we said farewell to our friends Bree and Sam who were both a joy to have helping out at the farm this summer. Thanks for your time and energy!
This CSA Week 11 box included three kinds of tomatoes, two colors of bell pepper, kale, scallions, eggplant, green beans, jalapeño peppers, leeks, and potatoes. Not sure how to tell the difference between leeks and scallions? The green portion of leeks are flat and on scallions they're hollow and cylindrical. Having trouble using all of the bounty while it's fresh? This week's member newsletter includes tips for how to best freeze each of these veggies along with the other items on our harvest list.
