We've almost made it through July 😎 kudos to all the growers out there battling the pests, heat, lack of - or too much - rain. Farming is gratifying in so many ways though this time of year can be super challenging.

Here are some pictures from the past week. So grateful for the rain this week. Everything is responding, including the w**ds.

We didn't open the online store this week to give ourselves a small break but you can find us at the Thursday from 5 to 8 pm!

Thanks for your support!! ❤️

It was a busy week on the farm! Not only is it peak season but we also had lots of visitors. From a baby shower to an in-district meeting from Rep Brown, getting bees to a WIC day at the farmers market, plus a visit from Cornell University extension.... glad the weekend is here and always grateful for our amazing farm team, customers and partners. The farm looks beautiful and bountiful and it makes me so happy to share it with others.

Who's saving seeds? If you haven't and want seeds, check out the coolest event in town - the
Annual Winter Seed Swap on Saturday, January 27th!
These are butterfly w**d seeds that I'm planting in a milk jug greenhouse since they need cold stratification.

Lettuce talk! Seeking ideas on good lettuce varieties for next season. Which cut and come again lettuces have performed best for you? We are planning our seed order and looking for ideas. We love the Intercut from Johnny's seeds for green leaf and have had good luck with the one-cut or EZ cut varieties. I'm particularly looking for a good red leaf variety to try. Last year our mix included red sweet crisp salanova, intercut, muir, and cegolaine planted at 4" spacing using the paperpot transplanter, 4 rows/30" bed. Summer was pretty cool and wet, so this mix performed well all season. Zone 6b (actually 7a now). Thanks!

Getting the farm ready for winter involves a lot of work! Mulching plants, adding compost and tarping the beds is almost done though.....had to take a break to vote and hope you did too! Thankful for the abundant leaves that we can shred to keep our beds covered. And, looking forward to some rest next week.

It looks like the universe is trying to tell us something here....maybe the season is over finally. We need to replace the plastic again (we did it in 2021 due to getting it too taut on the frame). One benefit of the timing is the soil in the tunnel can get a good rain drenching. This go round we'll be retrofitting the tunnel with a ridge vent that will be operated by a temperature-controlled motor. We'll post updates as we go along and welcome any tips from anyone who has done this. We got the ridge vent kit from CVS.

Fall clean up continues and the compost bins are full! Lots of chipping and shredding and mixing so all the plants debris breaks down into a great soil amendment for next season. Grateful for the warm weather to get these tasks done. We tarp or plant the beds to suppress w**ds, encourage biological activity, and prevent erosion. Doing it now means easier work come spring 🌱

We're trying to overwinter some snapdragons (Costa series from Johnny's) in the tunnel. These were transplanted a few weeks ago. Some were pinched prior to transplant and some we didn't pinch. What do you recommend here? Should we pinch all of them and should we cover with row cover as well (once it gets colder)? Those that we've pinched have already started branching. Zone 6b.

Some fall farm updates. We managed to get all the onions in before the recent rains (the paperpot transplanter made this quick work), used the TDS to incorporate compost and prep beds for spring plantings (some will be tarped and some will be planted with garlic) and getting old crops cleaned out and stored for winter. Trying an experiment with some overwintered flowers in the high tunnel. Fall is bittersweet...we're so ready for a break but we will miss the days of outside work, fresh air and fresh produce. Grateful to have so much stored for winter between freezing, canning and dehydrating. What have you been putting up for winter?

Look Ma, new beds!! On our small 1/2 acre farm, new growing space is something to write home about! This area is being tarped over the winter with plans for perennials... flowering bushes or greenery for bouquets next season. Any suggestions on what might do well? Full sun, clay soil, stays pretty wet, zone 6b, ideally quick growing.

All this tomato removal has led to today's research project on the farm. Folks from OSU are doing research on anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD), a method for managing soilborne pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and nematodes that can cause disease in the tomatoes. We signed up to be a test site and want to share some of the process. First step was clearing out the tomatoes. We then tilled the beds and they added a carbon source - in this case they added wheat bran as a food source for beneficial microbes. We tilled in the wheat bran to incorporate it into the soil, added drip lines and then the research team covered test sections with black plastic. We watered deeply (to depth of 8"). The plastic is buried to prevent air exchange. It will stay covered for 4 weeks or until the odor gets strong enough to indicate that it's gone anaerobic. The beneficial microbes break down the wheat bran, depleting oxygen in the soil and producing toxic byproducts that kill soilborne pathogens.

Took time today to clean out the cherry tomatoes. They had a great run and finally succumbed to disease. Best performer continues to be esterina - yellow, sweet, and prolific! After the final harvest, we chip and shred the stalks and compost them.
