It was a busy week on the farm! Not only is it peak season but we also had lots of visitors. From a baby shower to an in-district meeting from Rep Brown, getting bees to a WIC day at the farmers market, plus a visit from Cornell University extension.... glad the weekend is here and always grateful for our amazing farm team, customers and partners. The farm looks beautiful and bountiful and it makes me so happy to share it with others.

Annual Winter Seed Swap on Saturday, January 27th!
These are butterfly w**d seeds that I'm planting in a milk jug greenhouse since they need cold stratification.

Lettuce talk! Seeking ideas on good lettuce varieties for next season. Which cut and come again lettuces have performed best for you? We are planning our seed order and looking for ideas. We love the Intercut from Johnny's seeds for green leaf and have had good luck with the one-cut or EZ cut varieties. I'm particularly looking for a good red leaf variety to try. Last year our mix included red sweet crisp salanova, intercut, muir, and cegolaine planted at 4" spacing using the paperpot transplanter, 4 rows/30" bed. Summer was pretty cool and wet, so this mix performed well all season. Zone 6b (actually 7a now). Thanks!

Getting the farm ready for winter involves a lot of work! Mulching plants, adding compost and tarping the beds is almost done though.....had to take a break to vote and hope you did too! Thankful for the abundant leaves that we can shred to keep our beds covered. And, looking forward to some rest next week.

It looks like the universe is trying to tell us something here....maybe the season is over finally. We need to replace the plastic again (we did it in 2021 due to getting it too taut on the frame). One benefit of the timing is the soil in the tunnel can get a good rain drenching. This go round we'll be retrofitting the tunnel with a ridge vent that will be operated by a temperature-controlled motor. We'll post updates as we go along and welcome any tips from anyone who has done this. We got the ridge vent kit from CVS.

Fall clean up continues and the compost bins are full! Lots of chipping and shredding and mixing so all the plants debris breaks down into a great soil amendment for next season. Grateful for the warm weather to get these tasks done. We tarp or plant the beds to suppress w**ds, encourage biological activity, and prevent erosion. Doing it now means easier work come spring 🌱

We're trying to overwinter some snapdragons (Costa series from Johnny's) in the tunnel. These were transplanted a few weeks ago. Some were pinched prior to transplant and some we didn't pinch. What do you recommend here? Should we pinch all of them and should we cover with row cover as well (once it gets colder)? Those that we've pinched have already started branching. Zone 6b.

Some fall farm updates. We managed to get all the onions in before the recent rains (the paperpot transplanter made this quick work), used the TDS to incorporate compost and prep beds for spring plantings (some will be tarped and some will be planted with garlic) and getting old crops cleaned out and stored for winter. Trying an experiment with some overwintered flowers in the high tunnel. Fall is bittersweet...we're so ready for a break but we will miss the days of outside work, fresh air and fresh produce. Grateful to have so much stored for winter between freezing, canning and dehydrating. What have you been putting up for winter?

Look Ma, new beds!! On our small 1/2 acre farm, new growing space is something to write home about! This area is being tarped over the winter with plans for perennials... flowering bushes or greenery for bouquets next season. Any suggestions on what might do well? Full sun, clay soil, stays pretty wet, zone 6b, ideally quick growing.

All this tomato removal has led to today's research project on the farm. Folks from OSU are doing research on anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD), a method for managing soilborne pathogens such as bacteria, fungi and nematodes that can cause disease in the tomatoes. We signed up to be a test site and want to share some of the process. First step was clearing out the tomatoes. We then tilled the beds and they added a carbon source - in this case they added wheat bran as a food source for beneficial microbes. We tilled in the wheat bran to incorporate it into the soil, added drip lines and then the research team covered test sections with black plastic. We watered deeply (to depth of 8"). The plastic is buried to prevent air exchange. It will stay covered for 4 weeks or until the odor gets strong enough to indicate that it's gone anaerobic. The beneficial microbes break down the wheat bran, depleting oxygen in the soil and producing toxic byproducts that kill soilborne pathogens.

Took time today to clean out the cherry tomatoes. They had a great run and finally succumbed to disease. Best performer continues to be esterina - yellow, sweet, and prolific! After the final harvest, we chip and shred the stalks and compost them.

Store open and newsletter ....

Hello Farm Family,

I hope you enjoyed the Labor day weekend. We managed to get some R&R in by just staying home. The heat is back on for a few days and it will begin to cool down later this week just in time for fall plantings. This week we’re excited to have arugula and greens mix in the store, alongside all the summer goodies that are getting a boost from the high temps. Another round of cucumbers might just make it before it gets too chilly. A couple new items in small quantities available in the store this week: habanada peppers, think habaneros without the heat; paste tomatoes for those interested in making sauces; and yellow squash. Plus, beautiful beans, tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, beets, chard, kale, herbs and flowers.

Link in bio to order for delivery or pick up this week.

Heather has added one more flower event. This will be the last one of the season and you can find all the details at this link.

As always, thanks for supporting us!

Annabel and Eric

Online store is open and newsletter ....

Hello Farm Family,

Happy summer solstice eve! Tomorrow is officially the first day of summer and the longest day of the year in terms of daylight hours. The weather looks fantastic so let’s get outside for part of the day (your farmers will be outside no matter what!).

The start of summer means tomatoes! And, the cherry tomatoes are looking great and starting to produce. It will take a couple more weeks for full production, but there are some pints in the store. Check inventory later in the week if you miss out. This year we’re growing our standards - esterina (yellow), sun orange, and trying a few new varieties for fun - edox and artemis (red) and chocolate sprinkles, a dark red-purple with green striping.

In addition to the tomatoes, we have lettuce, greens mix, kale, chard, spinach, onions, garlic scapes, herbs, and flower bouquets.

Link to online store in bio. Please let us know if you need to schedule an alternate pick up.

Increasing our delivery radius: Some of you may have noticed we started charging a delivery fee. Since that is the case, we’ve opted to add to our delivery radius to include the following zip codes: 44144, 44109, 44113. We’ll see how this goes and if we need to make further changes, we will. If you’re not in the delivery zone, but would like delivery, please reach out to me so we better understand the demand. I can’t guarantee delivery, but it will help us make informed decisions.

Flower event update: we have decided to postpone the first flower event to July 8th to give the flowers more time to grow. We’ll share more info next week. Thanks for your patience!

Annabel and Eric

Store open and weekly newsletter.

And, now for your weekly weather report….no rain for almost 3 weeks in the springtime is such a huge challenge on the farm! I know it’s been beautiful and I love this gorgeous weather. I just wish it would rain so the ground could get a good soaking and our rain catchment system would be working again. We have mulch on most beds, drip irrigation to target the plants at the roots, and are trying a new method to create a micro-climate close to the most tender greens. If I’m being honest, though, it’s been a tough 3 weeks. It looks like we may get some rain this weekend, so please keep your fingers crossed. Maybe I need to plan an outdoor event because when I do, it usually rains!

Despite the lack of precipitation, the veggies carry on. We’re excited to see the first garlic scapes of the season. This is the flower stalk of hardneck garlic (photo below) and signals the bulb is growing. We pull them off the plant to help focus the energy on growing the bulb. Plus, they are a delicious garlicky treat that can be used in a variety of fun ways before the garlic bulbs are ready to harvest. Try garlic scape butter, pesto or sauté them and add them to your morning omelet (or any dish for added garlic flavor). Yum!

This week we also have beautiful greens - lettuce, greens mix, kale, chard; a few purple cabbages, herbs, onions, and a handful of flower bouquets.

Speaking of flowers, save the date for our first flower event of the summer. We are targeting July 1st and will share more details as the flowers progress. For those who want to come hang out on the farm without an agenda or fee, we’ll be hosting a few “Unplug at the Farm” events as well. Details coming soon!

Order Veggies for delivery or pick up this week. Please let us know if you need to schedule an alternate pick up. Find link to store in bio.

Super excited about the tomatoes this season! These were started in mini soil blocks and potted up to 2" blocks. They'll be potted up again into cow pots. We're trying a new labeling system this season as well - TerraSlate waterproof paper that goes through the printer. So far, so good. It sure beats writing out thousands of labels by hand! Plants will be available for sale late May/early June - see link in bio.
