Who knew something so small could be so cute!

The baby otters are receiving around the clock care as the moms were a little surprised themselves. After much debate and concern about their mothering skill and lack of milk, the babies were pulled for surrogate mom care, aka the sleepless humans on the Otter Team 😅, feeding them around the clock as they settled in a specialty incubator to keep them healthy and growing and protected!

The phrase "The Miracle of Life" could not have a more literal meaning. Help us welcome two new surprise additions to our NOGAWILD Asian Small-clawed otter family! 🦦

If you have done an Otter Experience or Ult. Otter Splash with us, you may have met Noah, Rainbow, and Hannah the otters. Noah and Rainbow have been together here with us for an astonishing 12 years, and 9-year old Hannah has been with us for the majority of her life. None of them have ever produced young, and none of them showed the normal behavioral or physical signs of otters getting ready to have babies. Imagine the Otter Team's shock when they came in to say "good morning!" and found these two adorable babies!

Lets give Noah an atta-boy and welcome the otterly adorable pups into the world! Where are all of our Noah fans! Let's hear from you! If you haven't met Noah sign up for otter experience and give him a high 5 🙂

My, what big teeth you have! Did you know that Wolves have 42 teeth, while humans only have 32? Wolves have 20 teeth on the upper jaw (six incisors, two canines, eight premolars, and four molars), and 22 teeth in the lower jaw (six incisors, two canines, eight premolars, and six molars). Scientists have measured up to a 400psi bite force in a wolf's bite! (Source: the California Wolf center)

Bones are EXTREMELY important in a wolf's diet, which is why those big teeth and a strong jaw are so important. Bones help keep their teeth clean, provide essential nutrients, and help young wolves grow big and strong bones and healthy joints themselves!

Wolfy ears are pretty cool! Unlike the ears of a husky, wolf ears are small, more rounded at the tips and more "cupped" forward in shape. Their ears are also heavily furred both on the inside and the outside. These smaller and heavily-furred features help prevent frostbite and can also help keep dirt out of their ears.

Like your dogs at home, wolves also use their ears to communicate! By holding them high, low, flat, or pinned at an angle, their ear postures can help their fellow pack-mates understand how they are feeling.

Today is the start of Wolf Awareness Week! Wolf Awareness Week is dedicated to understanding wolves and what makes them so special. 🐺

Wolves are a keystone species, just like beavers, bees, the saguaro cactus, and the sugar maple tree. A keystone species is an organism that other species in its environment heavily depend on. If a keystone species is removed, their entire ecosystem can potentially collapse or change drastically. Wolves regulate prey populations and have a heavy influence on their grazing and foraging patterns. This helps provide healthy habitats for other plants and animals.

The wolves at NOGAWILD serve as ambassadors to educate our community on their crucial place in this world. Follow along with us this week to learn more about wolves from our Carnivore Keeper, Erica!
