Yesterday we had two wonderful Golden Retrievers, ages 6 and 2, come in for elective surgical procedures. Both dogs had a history of eating a well-known and popular grain free diet for several years. In one dog, an arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) was detected so an x-ray of his chest was taken. His heart was enlarged, so an echocardiogram was scheduled for that afternoon. An x-ray was also taken of the other dog's chest as a precaution, and his heart was also enlarged. He was able to get an echocardiogram same day, as well.

The reports on both dogs just came back, and both of these gorgeous, otherwise perfectly healthy dogs have Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The cardiologist suspects that in both cases it is related to their diet. Thankfully, this condition was caught early, and when fed a traditional diet, their condition should hopefully reverse. Their cases are being reported to the FDA, along with the thousands of others from across the country.

There is no evidence to support feeding grain-free. Most pet allergies are related to environment (pollens, etc) or protein sources. Grain allergies account for a tiny fraction of all food allergies in dogs. Unfortunately, many dogs are becoming very ill or even dying from eating so-called "BEG" diets (boutique, exotic, grain-free), and the terrible thing is nutritionally mediated dilated cardiomyopathy is 100% preventable. There have been zero reported cases of NMDCM in dogs eating foods that meet WSAVA guidelines, currently made by Purina, Hill's, Iams/Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. We strongly suggest if you are feeding a "BEG" diet that you change your dog over to one of the brands listed above. If you have any questions specifically related to your pet, please call us.

We are so hopeful we caught this disease in time for our two beautiful patients to reverse their disease. Their very caring and dedicated owners have already changed their diet to one that meets WSAVA criteria. The articles below will help explain this disease, WSAVA guidelines, and why grain-free was more marketing than science.

With the temperatures rising and summer months ahead let's talk about heat exhaustion and heat strokes! Heat exhaustion and heatstroke in dogs can be caused by a combination of high temperatures, strenuous exercise, and underlying health issues. Dogs can't sweat like humans, so they rely on panting to cool down. Here are some ways to prevent heat exhaustion and heatstroke in dogs. Provide shade- Provide your dog with access to shade from vegetation or use your own shadow.
Provide water- Make sure your dog has access to fresh water and encourage them to drink frequently. You can also try frozen treats or wet food. Limit exercise- Avoid strenuous exercise on hot days, especially early in the day before the heat index rises. Keep dogs indoors- Keep dogs inside with air conditioning, especially brachycephalic breeds, elderly or obese dogs, and dogs with heart or lung disease. Don't leave dogs in cars- The inside of a car can be much hotter than outside, even on cool days. On an 80Β°F day, the temperature inside a parked car can reach 100Β°F in 10 minutes, and 130Β°F in 30 minutes. If your animal is showing any signs it is urgent that you bring your pet in asap. Just 10 minutes can mean life or death with your fur baby!!

Okay everyone it's that time of year again where Parvovirus is on the rise!! We see it year round but during the warmer part of the year it's bad! So let's get to know exactly what we are dealing with. Canine parvovirus (CPV), also known as parvo, is a highly contagious and potentially deadly viral disease that affects dogs. It's especially dangerous because it's easy to spread and can have a long incubation period of 3–14 days. During this time, an infected dog may appear healthy, but it can still carry and spread the virus. Parvo is a gastrointestinal virus that can be deadly to dogs without treatment. It can be passed easily from dog to dog through direct contact with an infected pet or through f***s. Parvo can also live on soil for up to a year(but here in SE Texas way longer!) and on fabric and carpet for up to six months.
To protect your dog, you should vaccinate them against parvo. Puppies should receive their first vaccinations at 6, 8, and 12 weeks of age, and a booster vaccine between 14 and 16 weeks(Every vet does their vaccine routines differently there is no wrong way as long as your pet is getting them!!). You should take your dog to the vet as soon as possible if they are showing signs of canine parvovirus (CPV), also known as parvo, such as: Lethargy, Loss of appetite, Vomiting, Diarrhea(which may be bloody), Fever, Weight loss, Weakness, Dehydration, Depression or painful abdomen. Please stay informed on this virus and bring them for testing even if you're not sure, it's always better to be safe than sorry!
