Nail trims aren’t just about the nails.

Every time we share videos of dogs overcoming nail trim aggression, people ask, ‘Why put them through that stress? Why not use alternatives?’ But here’s the thing, it’s not about the nails at all.

Dogs who react aggressively during nail trims are learning that if they push back hard enough, they can make something they don’t like stop. This same behavior carries over to vet visits, guests in the home, and other stressful situations.

That’s why working through nail trims is one of the first things we do with every board and train. If a dog can calmly accept something they once fought against, they can learn to handle pressure in other areas too.

Fiona is proof of this. She used to be horrible about nail trims, hated being touched, and showed serious aggression. But by working through these challenges instead of avoiding them, she’s now completely comfortable with handling and no longer struggles with the aggression she once had. Real change takes work, but it’s always worth it!

Love and patience are great, but they’re not enough to fix serious behavioral issues.

When we share before-and-afters of aggressive dogs, people say, ‘They just needed love!’ When in reality training, structure, and respect are what truly create change.

Building a well-behaved, confident dog takes more than affection, it takes guidance. That’s what actually helps them overcome reactivity and aggression for good

If you’re always avoiding your dog’s triggers, you’re not actually helping them improve.

A lot of reactive dog owners unknowingly keep their dogs just under their threshold to avoid reactions. You may be wondering, what’s the problem with that? The second a surprise trigger pops up, your dog isn’t ready, and NEITHER ARE YOU.

Instead of avoiding challenges, start pushing that threshold in a controlled way. Expose your dog to tough situations where you’re prepared to guide them through it. That’s how you actually break the cycle and get past reactivity for good!

How can you tell if a dog wants you to pet them?

In order to make sure your interaction with a dog ends in success, you need the dog’s consent. There’s that word again that’s been a big trigger in the dog training world!

We want the dog to consent so that they can feel like they aren’t being FORCED. It can be difficult for people to resist the rude to just pet a dog no matter the circumstances. You have to advocate for your dog. If your guests can’t resist the tempting urge to pet your dog without them first offering that interaction, it may be best to simply let your dog hangout in a separate space. By forcing those interactions repeatedly on dogs, that’s how we see behaviors like reactivity emerge, because the dog feels like it needs to set a firm boundary of “DON’T TOUCH ME”. We avoid that by having structured interactions where the dog can decide whether or not they want to be pet by the person.

It’s easy to feel like you need to avoid every situation that can trigger your reactive dog. And yes, there should be some priority in the early stages of working through reactivity to create adequate space and reduce the likelihood of your dog having a major outburst. However, sometimes it’s good to push the envelope with your dog! Not everyone is going to immediately respect your boundaries with your dog and we can’t always control every scenario. By continuing to work and push your dog little by little, their tolerance to previous triggers will build and they will realize the things that set them off simply are not that important!

What is the 1st step when working with fear aggressive dogs?

Working with a fear aggressive dog doesn’t require a ton of corrections, especially when we are in the very early stages of their training. The most important first step is taking away the reinforcement behind their behavior and showing them simultaneously that nothing bad is going to happen to them. By continuing to work with dogs like Ophealia in this way, their walls come down little by little, and they begin to loosen up without the need for a ton of corrections.

Winston started his one on one lessons this past week and when he arrived, he sure did cause chaos. Loud barking, lunging and pulling his owner around which he had stated has hurt his shoulder for quite some time now, Typically, we start with obedience for our first session but it felt important that we assessed Winston's social skills for how intense his entrance was. Make sure to subscribe and follow for more! Enjoy.

Meet Rick: newest board and train.
When Rick came in for his drop off, it was apparent he had not been socialized much, atleast properly. In this video, you'll see footage from his very first social here as he's fleeing, scared and muzzled. As it progresses to the second social, you'll get a glimpse of Rick approaching dogs this time and coming off as a bit too pushy. We are happy to share a social video without talking so you all can see the process. Enjoy!

When Brownie came to us, it was extremely difficult to touch him due to his intense fear aggression. The more we worked with him, we were able to get collars on him, resulting in us being able to start the process of muzzle conditioning. Here's the step by step process. Enjoy!
