Do you get stressed during the holidays? We here at SnW sure do! Your pets can get stressed as well, especially when guests are over. During your event, or even just with a few folks over, keep an eye on your pup for signs of stress. Licking, whale eyes, and pacing are all signs of stress. Taking a time out if needed for a run in the backyard or a quick play session in another room can help your pup relax.
We hope all these tips help you during this crazy season!

This adorable nugget is Frieda. She's a Cattle Dog, Elkhound mix, and just as adorable as they come. She and her momma are working in Day Training with Valarie to prep her for Service Dog work. She is working on basic manners, engagement with mom, and finding outlets for her energy! She is smart as a whip and super sweet. Good luck little girl, you have a big future ahead of you!

A Christmas tree is full of shiny, noisy, new things for your pets to want to explore. Using an exercise pen, baby gate, or other type of barrier helps keep your pets, and tree, safe! We've seen families wrap boxes like gifts and stack them around the bottom to protect their trees as well. WHat do you use to keep your tree safe?

In addition to keeping breakables out of reach, it's best to keep ALL decorations out of reach when possible. Plants, like poinsettias, are toxic to dogs. Even if your pup isn't usually a chewer, the stress of the holidays can cause them to munch on new things. Don't take the chance, keep decorations out of reach!

Things can get loud when guests are over. Holiday noises like jingle bells and music can be as chaotic as all those extra voices to your dog. Using a fan or white noise machine in your dog's safe space can help mask all those sounds and relax your pup. Just make sure cords are out of reach; many dogs will chew when stressed.

When you're entertaining and your pup is in another room or their crate, it can be easy to forget that their potty routine is being interrupted. Be sure to plan potty breaks at appropriate times. Use a timer or alarm if necessary to keep yourself on time. Your pup (and your floors) will thank you!

Whether you're having guests over or not, be sure to secure decorations and if possible, keep them out of reach of your pup. While they may not try to eat them, wagging tails and nighttime zoomies may knock breakables over. The last thing you want to worry about is picking glass out of bare feet or paws!

With more people in your home, it's easy to lose track of where everyone is. Take extra care when children are in your home. Even the nicest, child-friendly dog can snap under stress, and most kids are going to want to see the doggie. Make sure all adults know that your dog is to be left alone, and keep an eye on those little ones!

Reduce the chance of an over-eager greeter jumping on your guests by keeping your pup on their harness and leash when people arrive. Even the best-trained dogs can get excited when folks enter their home. This extra layer of safety also prevents an anxious or scared dog from running out the open door.

Teach your pup to "go to place" before your party starts. This way, they know that it's time to retreat to their room or crate, and you're not dragging them away from people or food. This allows you to have them go where you need them to and gives them the autonomy to do it themselves. A win-win!

Some helpful information from Trainer Tiffany:
Did you know that according to the ADA, Service Dogs are NOT required to wear any gear at all? The place of business is allowed to ask 2 questions. Is that a Service Dog, and what is one task the dog is trained to do?
Many Service Dog Teams opt to have their dog wear gear, so they are easily identifiable in public spaces. Wearing a Service Dog harness often lets people know that the dog is working and should be left alone. For those of you who see a team out in public (whether they are in gear or not) If the dog looks like it’s working, treat the person as if the dog is not even there. For reference, this is handsome Rio showing off his Service Dog gear. He is working hard to become the best Service Dog for his person.

Place enrichment items in their crate or room, wherever their safe space is. A frozen Kong, snufflemat, or other enrichment toy will not only keep them busy and distract them from the sounds and smells coming from your gathering. Another great way to reduce stress and fight boredom!
