Hi Everyone! Exciting news to share. One of our shelter dogs, Tyson, is working on self-publishing his first (and last) book. It's called "Are You My Mother?" and it's about his search for his forever home. Tyson is pumped about finding his future mother (and/or father)! Below is an excerpt from his book that he'll finish writing once he's adopted.
″Yes I know who you are," said 3-year-old Baby Tyson. “You are not a kitten. You are not a hen. You are not a bird. You are not a cow. You are not a boat, or a plane, or a Snort! You are a wonderful human, and you are my mother.”

We are again sharing FACTS about the Lakewood Animal Shelter and want to clarify some confusion.
The Lakewood Animal Shelter is a city run shelter and Animal Control operates the shelter. They have a completely new staff starting the beginning of this year.
FERAL cats are very different from stray cats. Feral cats are not socialized to people, are fearful of people and will likely never become acclimated to living indoors. Feral cats that are trapped by Lakewood residents on their property and brought down to the shelter are held for 48 hours to give any possible owner/caregiver a chance to reclaim before they are euthanized- with full disclosure to the trapping resident that this will happen.
Kittens and cats brought in to the shelter in carriers by residents that are friendly and handled by people are a completely different situation. These are STRAY animals.
The shelter staff takes in stray animals from the city of Lakewood only. These stray animals are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and seen by a vet if sick. We, CCLAS, a separate non profit organization, assists with veterinarian costs when needed. Our goal is assure no animals suffer and as many that can be adopted find their forever homes.
Unfortunately, some STRAY animals are too sick when they come in, and are humanely euthanized- these on the advice of a veterinarian. And FERAL cats brought in by residents are also euthanized as described above.
Again we urge you if you have specific concerns or questions about your City of Lakewood Animal Shelter to contact them to ask questions and address the issue directly. The staff is open and transparent about their operations.

The Citizens Committee for Lakewood's Animals & Shelter (CCLAS) appreciates the passion and concern of Lakewood’s pet loving community and we are making this statement in response to some recent activity on Facebook regarding unowned cats in our neighborhoods.
If you have any concerns about the City of Lakewood animal control officers and the city run shelter, we request you get your information straight from Lakewood Animal Shelter staff. You’re welcome to even stop down and visit the staff and animals at the shelter during business hours! There is new staff in place and they are working hard to respond to all community issues regarding animals in Lakewood. CCLAS is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, a separate organization from the Lakewood Animal Shelter. Our mission is to provide financial assistance and resources to the Lakewood Animal Shelter for the quality care of abandoned, orphaned, sick, and injured animals. Our financial assistance for the animals at the Lakewood Animal Shelter addresses veterinarian care costs above the basic needs that typically a municipal shelter provides. CCLAS works very hard to ensure adoptable animals receive the medical care they need and that they find their forever homes!
Part of CCLAS’ mission is advocacy as well. We are acutely aware of the abundance of community cats in our city. “Community cat” is an umbrella term that refers to any member of the Felis catus species who is unowned and lives outdoors. Both feral and stray cats are considered community cats.
We have been advocating, through the city of Lakewood Animal Safety and Welfare Advisory Board, to clarify language in the city ordinances regarding Trap, Neuter, and Return (TNR) policies for feral cats. TNR is the only proven way to address the issue. As a result of months of research and meetings, proposed legislation has been forwarded to the City of Lakewood Administration and City Council for their consideration. Please watch the City Council Docket for this legislation in September and please support these TNR changes to help the community cats in our city.

Sweet 11-month old Henry is looking for his forever home! This goofy guy is a puppy so he likes to play, chew on things, eat, sleep and repeat! Henry is house broken and walks well on a leash. He gets along with other dogs but isn’t a fan of cats (I think the feeling is mutual from cats).

Happy National Kitten Day! Kitten season is still in full swing and during this time you’re more likely to find litters of kittens living outside. Do you know what to do if you find them? If you’re unsure, take a look at this flow chart to help you make a decision on what to do if you encounter kittens outside. 🐱🐾
It’s important to remember that if the kittens are not sick/injured, do not kit-nap! A kitten’s best chance at survival is with mom. CCLAS is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that supports the Lakewood Animal Shelter. We are a partnership with the shelter with a mission to help and support Lakewood's homeless pet population. We are a separate entity to the shelter and do not have a 'brick and mortar' facility. We operate entirely on donations from our supporters in the City of Lakewood and beyond. All donations in their entirety go to improving the lives of the pet population in Lakewood through spay/neuter partnerships, foster programs, and partnerships with local vets and pet stores.
