This is insane. On page 59 of the newest magazine you’ll find a story about a small down guy chasing his dreams relentlessly to help dogs around the world. So grateful, so humbled, so honored, so incredibly thankful.

The crazy thing about this piece is they wanted to share ME! Not a blurb online about what it’s like working with XYZ. They told my story and the success of my online content across social media. They give several of my training tips to millions. They mention my mom, my dad and the small town I grew up in.

When I chatted with PEOPLE last month I thought it was just a quick shoutout for their digital site. NOPE

You can walk into almost any store in the United States and see me and my story. Every target, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens airport etc.

It’s a very surreal feeling. I’m so happy that my team was given credit and had the opportunity to share this with me, my wife, my production team and my hard working training staff and personal staff.

We are literally constantly on the go running and gunning living out of suitcases just grinding. For the biggest magazine with a monthly viewership of near 100 MILLION monthly readers, It’s a major MAJOR win for my entire team and the No Bad Dog Army!

Keep in mind guys, I’m not a up and coming athlete or musician who just landed a record deal. I’m a dog guy, helping dogs. I don’t have a big label knocking down these media company’s door for spots, me and my team just work fu***ng hard. Most musicians and athletes don’t get a 2 page spread with PEOPLE… But the guy who lived in a tent while everyone laughed at him for wanting to work with dog professionally did.

If y’all want to support me in anyway, share this, tag some dog friends, go pick up the magazine this weekend and tag me, let’s keep the NO BAD DOG movement going! ❤️

Teaching your dog the foundation of leash pressure is a great way to sustainably create great leash work. In my newest YouTube video I go over step by step how to do this with a dog who doesn’t know how to yield to leash pressure.

It’s a rare day I actually get my hands on a dog for a extended amount of time AND no behavioral issues. When I do I can teach foundation skills! I also used the phrase “pressure path” in the video which I think is a great representation of what we’re doing here.

Click the link in my bio and watch the whole dang thing!

First date? STRESSFUL 😯
Job interview? STRESSFUL 😯
Buying a house? STRESSFUL 😭

Stress is part of our lives and it can suck for moment, but man once we get through it, LIFE can be amazing.

More than ever we need transparency in the dog training world. As most of you know I’ve spent my entire professional career coaching, helping, saving, donating my time training dog owners.

One thing I want YOU, the dog owners to understand, is that dog training will ALWAYS have polarizing, binary opinions — AND that’s okay! It’s JUST like politics, except it’s not politics these are animals. They all think differently, act differently, and behave differently with hundreds of discretionary approaches to each case.

I use all sorts of different dog training approaches and methods, including science-based training using the four quadrants. This is a personal preference. I am comfortable working with dogs that need structure, discipline, rewards, and punishment. I am skilled enough and have practiced enough to implement tools in my training. Just like with humans or children, not all kids learn the same.

I have plenty of friends that use positive only because it’s what they are comfortable with. The dogs and cases they are successful with typically don’t need anything else!

Here are two doodles that were completely out of control in all aspects of life. Barking, lunging, jumping, going crazy when guests came over. The owners tried for 5 months using harnesses and treats to control and discipline the dogs properly.

Turns out it just wasn’t enough.

This is something a lot of dog owners get frustrated with and even get rid of the dog or in some cases, dogs will be euthanized for such behavior.

Luckily the owners were never thinking about doing these things, but nonetheless they were frustrated. We tried a couple of different options for the 2 dogs and found the prong collar was the safest most effective piece of equipment for the family.

One thing I see often in different articles referring to the use of prong collars is the stress level of the dog can increase. CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS 👇🏻👇🏻

If you are with me on this, PLEASE share the post. I'm really hoping to spread the education to the (future) dog owners to prevent unfortunate consequences.

Dear dog owners,

Do you believe that every dog wants to play or is friendly to other dogs?

Do you believe that dogs can sort themselves out without our supervision?

Do you believe that dogs are allowed to do whatever they want and wherever they want to go with no recall?

If you say "it's off leash area", can you also read that the sign states "dogs must be under control"? And do you know how to control your dog to respect others boundaries?

Please take a moment to reconsider your "common-sense" of off-leash manners in public spaces. I know way too many people and dogs (including my dog) have been hurt or traumatized by irresponsible dog owners. Your trusting and stubbornly uneducated way of walking an uncontrolled dog without a leash can hurt people and/or dogs. And it's easily preventable!

Don't justify your dog's poor behaviour and let it free in public.
People/dogs shouldn't have to avoid parks just because some dog owners don't know how to respect boundaries or don't know how to control their own dogs.
Please remember that not everyone wants to be approached by your dogs.
If your dog's recall is unreliable, please LEASH YOUR DOG.
There are great online dog trainers like Cesar Millan , Southend Dog Training and Upstate Canine Academy to learn about dog behaviours and training. Having a dog comes with a huge learning package, and being safe for everyone should be a number one priority.

PM Sent. Pls Check.

Is there such a thing as a dog who can not be trained to allow a nail trim, no muzzle, no restraint? With all my other dogs, slow patient desensitization worked after a time and the dogs don't mind a bit. The new guy has a history of nail trim trauma but it's been a year and I'm not making much progress. It took 10 weeks of 5 minutes a day training just to get him to give me a paw on top of my open hand!

I have been very patient and reward him heavily for any cooperation. But it just seems to be eroding his trust in me. This is not a behavior I am comfortable correcting, he's not being bad. Are there dogs who will never be willing and calm for a nail trim?
From someone who was staunchly against e-collars until I got over myself and did the research to educate myself: I am so grateful for Dogtra and Tom Davis at Upstate Canine Academy for the education and tools I have to keep my pup safe and to give him the freedom he deserves.
Wanted to say we are beginners and love out German Shepard.

He is so smart and is learning daily.

Put biggest challenge is being around other dogs or animals off leash.

We provide structure and keep each day a routine.

We hope the videos will lead us in the right direction. Being in rural Illinois we are far from Upstate and very few trainers if any are available.

I would share a video of what he began working on today but not sure if that is appropriate
Our training and enrichment team at KC Pet Project had such a great learning experience this weekend during our visit from Tom Davis from Upstate Canine Academy, where we worked with many of our dogs that have some behavior challenges to work through. As the open-admission shelter for Kansas City, a lot of dogs that come to us have never been inside a house before, haven’t played with other dogs, or been around people. Our dedicated team works every day with these dogs, which requires a lot of patience and time, and through that work, our shelter continues to save lives in our community.

Tom also hosted a workshop with many of our fosters, staff, and volunteers where we talked through many ways to work with dogs in our shelter and in foster homes. Thank you, Tom, for all you do for dogs across the country and for generously giving so much of your time to come work with us in KC!
Hi, I am Bethany Prediletto, certified dog trainer and owner of Family Canine LLC. Growing up I always adored dogs but knew many dogs needed something more than love and care to live a fulfilling life, just not what that was. Fast forward to when I was finishing up my Early Childhood Education degree and working as a nanny. Now as an adult, caretaker and teacher I began to notice what was missing: training, and not just for the dog but for the whole family as well. Many household pets were loved but were just existing instead of thriving, causing stress in the household instead of joy. In order to provide the best quality training to families I became a certified dog trainer through Animal Behavior College's program. A fantastic internship at Upstate Canine Academy and volunteer training at the Montgomery County SPCA provided lots of hands-on experience before I started Family Canine LLC In 2018. I have now successfully trained dozens of dogs and puppies in general obedience, manners, and common nuisance behaviors - integrating the whole family in the training process. Ready to help your dog thrive; call 518-226-3115 today to learn more or visit our web site at https://www.familycaninellc.com
I just wanted to say how great your videos are. I have 2 high energy labs that have been very difficult to train. Until now!! Thank you so much Tom!
Question concern. I have a chihuahua/Jack Russell and he was abused as a puppy and is a bit more aggressive towards men when first meeting them a few times. He will bark a wag his tail, sniff their hand or leg and than nip at them and show aggression, but sometimes run off and act like it didn’t happen. He will also be a little aggressive or over excited when meeting dogs for the first time. I know he’s not aggressive because there is a chihuahua that gets in his face and bites him and my dog will come to me like he’s been hurt and show his belly, but he was introduced to a puppy recently and he nipped at the puppies face but showed no aggression before doing so. Would love your feedback or even have a way to communicate or send a video of his body signals and what is happening.

Thank you
At what age is it ok to start Ecollar training? I have a 4month old pup
