Did you know that the GVVEC is under all new local management?
Hi! My name is Dusty, and if you have been in you may have seen me here. I have been a veterinary technician at the GVVEC for over 5 years. I recently became the practice manager and I am excited to step into this new role.
To some, my face will be familiar, I have managed a local large animal practice for many years. I love being part of the veterinary community for my entire career.
You may recognize that sweet boy too, our sweet Genghis, that came to us severely malnourished, who is now thriving, that we have been updating about often. My husband and I are excited to welcome him into our home permanently!
In addition to Genghis, I have two cattle dogs, several farm cats, a small herd of beef cattle, horses and a very large flock of chickens! (Chicken math is real!) My husband and I have two grown children and we ranch in the Plateau Valley.
Together with our medical director, Dr. Emily Kastendieck, I am proud to offer quality emergency care to the pets of the Grand Valley and surrounding area. It is our goal to put our patient care and client experience first with every patient that we see.
The importance of heat stroke prevention
This handsome guy came to us, non-responsive, comatose and near death, after playing outside for a short time with his canine pals.
Because he is what we call a “bracheocephalic breed) (short nose, wide face, short thick neck) he was more at risk for heat stroke, and succumbed quickly to it.
His owners rushed him to us right away and through several days of treatment and close
Monitoring we were able to return him back to his owner in good health.
When the temperature is high it is safest to save outside activities such as walks or playing, for the coolest parts of the day and rest while it is the hottest.
We are so glad he is recovering well!
Happy Independence Day from the doctors and team of Grand Valley Veterinary Emergency Center!
Just a reminder that if your pet has an emergency we are open through the holiday! We will open at 6pm tonight and remain open 24 hours through the July 4th holiday.
We are fully staffed, and ready for all emergencies! 970-255-1911
This sweet and curious kitten found herself in a bit of a situation last night!
Her owner rushed her right into us and we were able to sedate her to relax her, and gently work the jar off her head.
Half an hour later, a little wet from a bath to wash off the lubricant used to help get it off, she was awake and ready to go.
She is expected to be just fine thanks to her owners quick decision to get her in right away before any physical trauma occurred!

Grand Rivers Humane
Genghis update!
He had been a rockstar!
He is eating so well, and settling in with our family perfectly.
Yesterday, he met Dr. Hoest and her amazing staff at Cottonwood Veterinary Hospital for a check up. His feet are healing nicely and he was as charming as ever! His bloodwork came back with some slight changes that we will monitor closely over the next few weeks to be sure they are improving.
His favorite things right now include-laying in the sunshine, he loves to be outside. Food-he is mastering a slow feeder puzzle bowl and wags his tail through his entire meal. Beds and soft blankets, he is so snuggly and loves soft things to snuggle in. Being part of a family-he loves to hang out with the crew while we cook or do yard work, anything he can be part of he wants to be. People, the most social guy ever! Car rides-he prefers to have the whole backseat and a fuzzy blanket to stretch out and take a solid nap.
He is thriving and appreciates all of the warm hellos and encouragement he gets when someone sees him around!
Thank you, Grand Rivers Humane for sponsoring him and giving him the very best chance at a great life!
Genghis update-
HE STOOD UP ON HIS OWN!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Though our sweet boy could walk on his own, he was unable to go from laying down or sitting to standing by himself. Today he got up and walked without assistance!
He continues his refeeding program and tomorrow his calorie intake will be more than what his body uses in a day, he will be able to start gaining weight now and the scariest most dangerous part of his program is almost behind us. He has handled it like a champ!
Check out his sweet pajamas, Sky Canyon Veterinary Hospital sent him, to help him stay warm! Being so thin he has little ability to keep himself warm and is always looking for something cozy.
Early last week, some Good Samaritans brought in a dog they had found trapped under a house. A young intact male pitbull, emaciated and dirty. This little guy seemed like he had no chance, but as soon as we set him on the exam table he wagged his tail.
We immediately called Mesa County Animal Services and without hesitation they said treat him! Dr. Kastendieck was able to stabilize him that night and he spent a few days transferring back and forth between our clinic at night and a day practice getting constant care.
Mesa County Animal Services, partnered with Grand Rivers Humane and they stepped in to cover the cost of his treatments. Our practice manager Dusty, decided without hesitation, that she would love to foster him through the slow and careful process of getting him safely back on food. Feeding him too many calories too quickly, would be very dangerous for him, and a precise plan must be followed exactly.
We all took a poll and decided to name him Genghis.
Follow along with us as we chronicle his journey back to health. This is day one, moments after he arrived to us. I will post updates from his first week in following posts.
If you feel called to help this sweet boy, he will have significant vet bills over the next few months and Grand Rivers Humane could use your support! You can find them here on Facebook.
We are honored to be able to help this sweet boy, and he is headed home with our practice manager, Dusty, to continue his recovery.
Genghis is a kind and loving boy, and he has a long road ahead of him, but we can’t wait to see him back to strong and healthy!
