Poppy is a busy farm dog, who presented with an unusual occurrence this weekend.

Poppy had been holding her head sideways and shaking it with one ear down. What initially looked like a grass awn (foxtail) turned out to be a grass awn and a live tick deep in her ear canal.

A little sedation to safely remove both and she went home feeling good as new!

In honor of National Animal Shelter week we wanted to highlight a couple of our local pets looking for their forever home. Starting with Millie!

Millie is a 4 years old female Domestic Longhair/Mix cat who weighs 11 pounds and has been with us for 22 days.
If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind feline friend, Millie is your girl! This stunning long-haired tortoiseshell has a personality as vibrant as her beautiful coat. At four years old, she's a delightful mix of charm and sass-definitely not your average cat!

Millie can be a bit of a mystery, with moods that can swing from playful to a bit aloof. She's got a unique, bipolar personality that keeps you on your toes! One moment she might be asking for cuddles, and the next, she's ready for some solo time. It's all part of her charm!

While Millie loves her humans, she prefers to be the sole queen of her castle and doesn't do well with other cats. If you're looking for a companion who will keep you entertained and on your toes, Millie is ready to find her forever home.

If you think you can handle a little sass and a lot of love, come meet Millie today! She's waiting to steal your heart. ??

This cute little guy, Buster, was recently seen at GVVEC for episodes of regurgitation and increased respiratory effort. It was recommended to perform x-rays of his chest to evaluate his lungs and esophagus for abnormalities to explain his clinical signs. Buster's x-rays revealed a very dilated intra-thoracic esophagus containing a significant amount of impacted food material. This finding is consistent with a diagnosis of megaesophagus, a disorder in which the esophagus becomes dilated and loses its ability to appropriately move food and water from the mouth to the stomach (picture of Buster's radiograph attached).

There are two types of megaesophagus: congenital (born with the condition) and acquired (occurs later in life either due to an unidentifiable cause (idiopathic) or secondary to other conditions). Because of Buster's young age, his megaesophagus is likely congenital.

Because regurgitation (passive production of food material without abdominal effort) is the most common clinical sign in cases of megaesophagus, aspiration pneumonia (inhalation of vomitus) is a common complication. Depending on the severity, this may necessitate hospitalization with oxygen therapy and antibiotics.

To ensure megaesophagus patients receive adequate nutrition (making sure food gets into the stomach) and to reduce episodes of regurgitation and aspiration pneumonia, there is a multimodal approach to management of this disorder. Management strategies include medication to reduce lower sphincter tone to allow food to enter the stomach easier, pro-kinetic agents to improve motility of the esophagus, feeding patients in an upright position (using gravity to pull food into the stomach), feeding patients a liquid or soft food diet made into meatballs, and allowing patients to sit in an upright position for 15+ minutes after eating and drinking (taking advantage of gravity again).

To aid in keeping patients in an upright position for the recommended duration, a Bailey Chair can be utilized (see attached picture). These special chairs can be purchased commercially or even made at home.

Sweet little Buster will require lifelong management of this disorder. He was started on different management techniques and is doing much better. On his radiographs, it is suspected that he likely had mild aspiration pneumonia secondary to his regurgitation, so he was also started on systemic antibiotics.

We wish this sweet boy a long and happy life with his dedicated family and we are so happy he is doing better! If you have any questions about megaesophagus, comment below 🙂

Our sweet boy has been with us 5 months now, and he is thriving!

He came to us at 22lb and now is a healthy 55 lbs and holding.

His favorite things are playing with his red heeler sister, car rides and cuddling up with his people.

He’s the happiest soul and enjoys every day to the fullest.
