**MUST READ IF YOU LOVE FEEL GOOD STORIES**

The Ed Hardy Racing Team put another WIN on the board at Re*****on Park last Saturday which was wonderful. However, the story behind this win made it just a little bit sweeter. The following is quoted from Doc Joe Carter's page. I hope you all enjoy!

"Animal abandonment and the story of Barry.

Every veterinarian will like this story.

Animal abandonment at veterinary clinics is a real thing. People show up at a vet clinic with their sick or injured animal, they receive an estimate, the owner gives you permission to treat but when asked for a deposit they have “forgotten their wallet.” Treatment begins and they leave never to be seen again. This happens all the time.

And so the story of Barry begins. The owner of Barry’s mother brings her to the clinic only to be never seen again.

The process of repossessing a horse and getting its registration papers is arduous at best. It takes forever and takes tons of effort. While that process goes on veterinarians are bound to care for the animal. They treat their medical problems. They provide food and board, preventative medicine, exercise and the list goes on and on.

It was early this year before we finally finished the legal process and received the registration papers on Barry and his mother. For lots of odd reasons it took 2 years.

In a cosmic sense, it seems these things never work out. No good deed goes unpunished so they say. In general our hope in this situation is once we assume ownership of an abandoned animal, we hope we can find a good home for them.

But Barry aka IMA SOUTHERN GOD was different.

The night Barry was born was not a typical night either. Horsewoman extraordinaire Carolyn Simancik was foaling mares at the clinic in April of 2020 and she called me with urgency in her voice. “I’m having trouble getting this c**t out, I need help.” If Carolyn said she needed help, she needed help! I was on my way.

Barry’s mother, Southern Goddess, was in full blown labor when I got there. She was down in a full sweat pushing as hard as she could. Barry’s front legs and nose were sticking out and Carolyn was in a full sweat herself pulling on those front legs.

I did a quick exam and determined everything was lined up right. But BARRY was huge and his shoulders were locked in her birth canal. With a little maneuvering and a lot brawn from Carolyn & I out popped Barry.

Remarkably Carolyn Simancik shot video of his first minutes in this world. (see below)

He definitely was pretty. He was strong. He jumped up and nursed in no time. All good things.

As he grew up I rarely saw him but Jessi, my veterinarian daughter, did and she liked him. His legs were straight, he was balanced, in other words he had good conformation. His form fit his function. But I remained a skeptic. I guess 37 years of the reality of veterinary practice will do that to you.

With the legal process the way it is the weanling became a yearling. Then the yearling became a two year old.

When the paperwork was finally completed I was ready to find him a new home. Sell him, give him away, whatever let’s just stop the feed bill.

However, Jessi Carter Arnold and her OEH team saw something. This c**t was athletic and had a good mind. She pressed me to try him. I again expressed my reservations from decades of veterinary practice and how I felt these things “never worked out.” I said, “Don’t throw good money after bad.” Jessi didn’t weaken.

We went and looked at Barry in the pasture. Jessi was adamant she thought he had all the pieces and a good name (father IMA FANCY PYC and mother SOUTHERN GODDESS produced the name IMA SOUTHERN GOD), on top of it her husband Brock David Arnold (a good horseman in his own right) had a feeling.

I gave in!

So off he went to trainer Ed Hardy and his team. He was a couple months behind when most c**ts start into race horse training. Not a good thing for 2 year old racing but he hasn’t missed a day training. Never sick, always healthy, likes his job. We started him a couple weeks ago in a Futurity trial where he showed a little immaturity by not breaking very sharply and ran 5th.

We entered him this weekend in a maiden special weight (against good horses) race this weekend at Re*****on Park as a long shot and to my surprise ( #10) wins in a photo finish! Wow!

So if there’s a lesson I guess it’s to keep the faith. Sometime a good deed does get rewarded!"

-Doc Joe Carter

As the legend Paul Harvey would say......and that is THE REST OF THE STORY!

Congratulations to all connections!
