For those who haven’t visited us, we offer a beautiful large indoor arena with dust-free footing and mirrors at both ends. It’s a rider’s dream every day of the year. We also feature a gorgeous large outdoor arena, installed and maintained professionally by Lawton Adams Construction. The outdoor footing is equestrian sand and fabric. It drains quickly and we use it year round, weather permitting. It’s the perfect setting to practice tests and freestyles! Both rings are conveniently located only steps away from the barn. Boarding and dry stalls are now available. Arrange a tour now to see how keeping your horses here will up your game!

Lis Hartel was one of our trainer Olav Drehn’s most important mentors. Working with her, he developed his approach to riding and training that emphasizes balance, trust and harmony. Thank you David for sharing

In 1952, Lis Hartel became the first woman to win an Olympic medal in individual dressage. Representing Denmark, she secured the silver in the Individual Dressage event riding Jubilee, a Thoroughbred/Oldenburg mare. What makes Hartel's accomplishment even more remarkable is her perseverance despite being paralyzed from the waist down due to polio contracted during her second pregnancy in 1944. Undeterred by her physical challenges, she continued to compete, seizing a second silver medal at the 1956 Olympics. Her extraordinary achievements earned her induction into Denmark's Hall of Fame in 1992 and recognition as one of Denmark's top 10 athletes of all time in 2005.

Come in out of the cold this winter! Two stalls just opened up for winter board. We feature a large indoor ring with dust-free footing, skylights and available heat for your rides. It’s attached to the barn and just a few steps away from the grooming stalls so you won’t have to fight the elements to get to the arena. Our tack room is heated and comfy with viewing windows, a couch, dining table and kitchenette with hot coffee, tea and hot cocoa available all day. For busy riders we have flexible hours and a full bathroom so you can clean up here before heading out. Trainers are available but if you already have one, we welcome outside trainers. Uphill Dressage Center is located in Salt Point, NY 12578.

This is so true. Horses don’t talk to us in human speech, but anyone who has spent a lot of time with them knows that they do speak to us in their own ways. It’s up to us as their caregivers to interpret their messages, and to give them the benefit of the doubt if something isn’t right.

I just got back from about an 8 day stint in the hospital, and since I was dealing with pain and was watching any number of others dealing with pain, it got me thinking about the difference between the way humans are able to express discomfort compared to the more stoic way that injured horses have to endure it.

Horses have all kinds of issues that are not created by humans, but they have ever so many which are.

It is so easy to assume that because horses are unable to verbally express discomfort and anxiety that they are not feeling those emotions and feelings.

Which leads me to these thoughts: we need to ask ourselves, since we all profess to love horses, whether what we are doing or failing to do Is causing pain that if it were happening to us would leave us begging for relief.

If we wouldn't want it done to ourselves we shouldn't ask it of our horses. In our daily riding are we demanding performances that our horses are not fit enough to accomplish without fatigue and stress? Are we doing sports or activities that take horses too far toward the outer limits of their abilities making it more likely that they will be injured? If we are, and we know it, are we getting involved in making positive changes to those sports or are we simply going along with the crowd and letting the horses take the hits?

Horses are completely vulnerable and powerless to escape what humans make them do. More and more I feel that the true definition of a good horseman, a good horse woman, is someone who puts the best interest of the horse as a number one priority. Competitive success is not a measure of being a good horse person. What is that measure is doing right by our horses.

Being in pain ourselves for a while lets us better appreciate how important it becomes to avoid doing it to creatures with limited abilities to let us know what they are feeling.

Unflappable. Literally.
