STICKS & STONES

Neither one is good for your dog. Just ask Ella. Ella poked herself with a sharp stick in the mouth and it’s caused her and her mom a lot of grief. Who knew a simple stick could cause so much pain?

Doc says greenies and dental chews are good in moderation. Those hard nylon bones are good for even strong chewers. Avoid rawhide, bones that splinter or break, wooden sticks and stones, of course.

Happy healing to Ella!

WHAT IS THAT LUMP, BUMP OR GROWTH?

Is it a cyst? wart? tumor? It’s never a bad idea to make an appointment to get bumps on or under the skin checked out by Dr. Syed or Dr. Farees. It could be a rash. It could be a swollen a**l gland. It could be a fat pad. It could be a tumor. It might even be an embedded tick! It’s happened!

Doc doesn't like to see any growths that are dark in color, cauliflowered or bleeding on the skin. Lumps under the skin that are near lymph nodes, the spine or hard to the touch should also be removed. Better to be safe than sorry!

In Daisy’s case, she had a hard little black speckled bump on her back right on top of her spine. Doc removed it right away and said by the looks of it, it was cancerous but encapsulated. It was small enough for him to get it all, down past the root.

Recovery was quick and easy. In and out surgery. Aside from her new bare spot, you'd never know it was there. Hair grows back!

Hummy here. Alyssa is one of my favorite aunties. She's been with me, greeting our guests, for about 9 years! I've even letting her hold me on her lap lately. I'm getting a little less spicy in my old age.

Alyssa gives me so much love and attention, I'm ok with sharing her with Beau, Benny and Rico. I'm getting soft.

She cares for all of our guests in this way, which makes her a great vet assistant to our doctors. We’re all very lucky to have her!

With love,
Hummy Hum Hum

IS IT TIME FOR A TEETH CLEANING?

In general, Dr. Farees recommends most dogs start with a teeth cleaning at age 5. However, if the teeth are pearly white (some dogs are so lucky), you may skip it for a year or two. Typically, a teeth-cleaning every two years between the ages of 5 and 8 is a good call.

After 8, a teeth-cleaning once a year or more is recommended. Small breed dogs are notorious for having gnarly teeth. We have a lot of little seniors with only a few left. Take a look inside your dog’s mouth regularly.

Irritated or bloody gums, heavy tartar and foul breath hint at the need for attention! Don’t let abcesses grow. If you see pus, call us. If your dog suddenly doesn’t want to eat or chews on only one side of the mouth, call us. Bad infections can cause sepsis, which is a big problem!

Take care of your pet’s teeth and your pet is likely to enjoy a longer, happier life!

Say hello to Raja, Dr. Farees’ invisible pet kitty. Hummy here. While Dr. Farees says Raja is friendly, I know for a fact I’m much more social and loving than Raja—most of the time. I get to greet you all 6 days a week. I'm a social butterfly.

If you see me on the counter, I may be inclined to allow you to rub my ears, but be aware of my social cues. Sometimes I can't be bothered.

So yeah, yeah, yeah. This is Raja—the one Dr. Farees leaves “at home” every day. I personally think I got the better deal.

With love,
Officer Hummy, Everyone’s Favorite

Say hello to the fashionable Miss Coco. If your pet needs a bandage change, at least you know they get to wear it in style. Patients get their choice of leopard, giraffe, tiger or zebra prints at Pet Docor. Coco here is wearing the uber-popular leopard sticky gauze.

Remember, these bandages are delicate. Please do not allow them to get wet. Secure a plastic bag over legs and feet when wet outside. Bad things happen under wet bandages. Trust us!

Molly was all smiles so we had to get a picture! She's having a little trouble with her sutures after surgery, so she was happy to be here to get fixed up. Mom said she is usually camera shy but she gave us a toothy grin. Good girl, Molly. We hope you’re feeling better now!

Sutures that bleed, are hot to the touch, opening/missing, seeping pus or have a foul odor need immediate attention. Call us right away, so we can get your pet back on the road to healthy healing!

Chihuahuas look like puppies forever. Tito is already three years old! We enjoyed his visit for a wellness check immensely even if he did give us the raspberries!! Don't miss your pet’s yearly exam. It’s an opportunity for us to catch health problems early and keep them in tip-top shape.

Yoda and Shelly (one of our former staffers) stopped in for a social visit yesterday. Dr. Farees had to give them some sad news about Yoda’s health last Friday, but Yoda is hanging in there and doing ok for now. It was good to see him bounce back the last few days. He’s a fighter! Every day is a bonus day in Yoda’s world!

So when will Yoda’s family know it’s time?

With Shelly’s permission, we thought we’d take a moment to discuss end of life care. For now, Yoda is alert, his gums are a healthy pink, he's eating and drinking, he’s walking on his own, sleeping through the night and his potty is normal.

You know your pet best. Some indicators that it may be time if your pet has been DIAGNOSED WITH A TERMINAL condition or has been seen by your vet for a quality of life check:

Your pet isn't eating/drinking
Bloody or frequent vomiting and diarrhea
Loss of bowels/bladder
Extreme lethargy (can't stand up on own)
Labored breathing at rest
Ruptured mass or foul odor
Pale white or yellow gums
Heavy panting
Unable to get comfortable (pacing)
Seizures

If your pet is experiencing any of these issues, call us and/or take your pet to an emergency animal hospital right away for evaluation.
We want what’s best for your pet and family alike.

In Yoda’s case, he’s not there yet so they are making the most of his time and enjoying life!

Sage and Lavender are model material with their bows, bling, fancy dresses, vaccinations, yearly heartworm tests and preventative care.

Their visits are always a joy and it’s good to see them in tip-top shape thanks to their mom’s attention to such details.

Sage and Lavender are all smiles!

POST-OP SNUGGLES

Sweet little Bailey came in for her spay surgery, so Alyssa loved up on her much of the afternoon. She is the sweetest young lady—nose kisses and all!

Getting your young lady spayed is of utmost importance. It’s not just about preventing pregnancy, but serious infections and cancer. It’s a life-saving operation.

Bailey got to go home the same day and in two weeks, she’ll get her stitches out provided she takes her pink medicine, wears a cone and heals up nicely.

DOGS LICKING PAWS OR SCRATCHING EARS?

As Doc likes to say, then it’s time for a muffler job!

When a**l glands get full, dogs often lick their paws and scratch their ears to self-soothe due to the discomfort. When dogs scratch their ears with their nails or along the floor, broken capillaries are apt to invite bacteria in, which often result in a nasty ear infection!

Full a**l glands may also get infected or even rupture.

If your pet gets chronic ear infections, make an appointment to get their a**l glands expressed. Full a**l glands are likely the culprit.

Nugget gets his glands expressed every 4-6 weeks, keeping him a happy boy!!
