Champ update!

Here is Champ 6 days out from his eye surgery. Champ has his re-check today with Dr. Ramsey in Williamston. Champ’s foster dad, Jack, said he is doing great today. His pain could be behind him now.

All donations for his surgery are welcome and appreciated! So far, we have raised $205 to help cover his medical expenses which have exceeded $3000. We anticipate more costs as we help Champ fully recover and get ready for adoption! He is worth every penny and we will continue to support him thanks to your generosity!

🚨 Available for Adoption! 🚨

DIOR Born - 6/8/2018 Female

Dior is a 63 lb. sweetheart. She is friendly, affectionate, very curious about her surroundings and still has a puppy level of excitement. She loves to cuddle and loves being around people of all ages. She gets along well with other dogs and cats but need to be fed separately. She is house trained and will let you know when it is time to go outside. She does well walking on leash. She likes to explore so she would do best in a physically fenced yard, but other forms of containment might be considered. She is a counter surfer and she has a history of getting into the trash and eating things she shouldn’t, so trash cans need to be dog-proof. Dior occasionally jumps up when excited, but otherwise, she is quite obedient, so no formal obedience training is required (though always encouraged). Dior would do well with an experienced or novice family. She grew up around young children and would be suitable with children 6 or older. However, interactions with children have not been observed in her foster home. Dior is incredibly sweet, smart, and quite the cuddle bug. If you think she might be just the right addition to your family, you have got to come meet her!

🌟 Adopted! 🌟

Daisy has been fostered for almost a year. This super sweet but scared girl hit the jackpot with her foster dad (who we think is pretty lucky to have been paired with her!). He has worked tirelessly over the last year with training and helping her to come out of her shell to let her Golden heart shine!

They decided to make things official with an adoption!!

It’s been a big day for the big guy!

Some of you know that Champ was scheduled for ocular removal next week for approx $4200. When his story went on Facebook, two of our volunteers stepped forward to recommend a vet, that would not only do the surgery for less, but is one of the few who do implants, so that Champ would look like a “typical” dog, without sewn shut lids.

Laura, a volunteer, paved the way with a phone call to them, and when I called the vet, was told they would do an evisceration, and eye prosthesis the very next day. FOR LESS!

So this morning Jim, myself and our golden, Frida May, made the 1 hour drive to Flushing to get Champ from his foster, Jack. We then drove another hour to the Animal Opthalmology Center in Williamston, where we met the wonderful and kind Dr. David Ramsey.

Champs eye pressure was very bad, and he had two detached retinas. This poor boy’s eyes were a mess.
It took three of us and a muzzle to be able to get drops in for the exam.

Once Dr Ramsey saw his behavior, he suggested an antibiotic shot, to avoid Champ needing the 10 days of antibiotic eye drops needed following the procedure.
Unfortunately, they didn’t carry it. So….their lovely staff member Tina, called another vet, requesting they fill the script for us, for Dr Ramsey to administer.

Back in the car we went, and drove off to pick up the meds! It was a VERY expensive shot. $295, but when told we were a rescue, Cedar Creek Vet discounted to $249.

Champs surgery went very well. He was ready to be discharged and transported back to his current foster at 3pm.

The total amount was $3,300, plus the shot. Still less than the original vet, and he has EYES.

Champ has a recheck in 1 week, and then hopefully he will be an adoptable boyo.
I am learning there are so many wonderful, caring people in this organization.
Not Just the dogs are golden!
It was a good day, and an honor to be a part of this boys journey.

Macie’s family sent us an update on how she is thriving!

“Macie came into our lives in 2019 through GRROM. She was approximately 10 months old at that time and she was afraid of everything. She has gone through obedience training and pet therapy training and has made huge strides since then.

She now commits her time to visiting a nursing care facility near our home. She has been visiting the residents every other week for over a year. In the beginning, she was a bit nervous and skiddish, but now that she has gotten to know a lot of the residents quite well, she is more comfortable during her visits and always gets excited when it is time to go see them and any new residents that may have arrived as well.

When we get to the facility, we go directly to the activities area where the residents are waiting for Macie. On our last visit, when we arrived at the activities area, there were no residents there due to lunch running a bit late and they were still in the dining room. I decided that we would walk the halls and round up some of the residents to let them know we were here, however, Macie was not going to have anything to do with that idea. She put on her brakes and would not move from the area. I started to walk away thinking she would follow me, but she didn’t. She stayed right there knowing that her friends would soon come to see her. (I just had to learn to be a little patient like Macie). After a few minutes, they arrived. Macie got super excited and went to greet each one individually as she loves getting treats, pets and kisses from them.

The residents have helped Macie come out of her shell and she has also helped them as well. There are a couple residents who have never spoken to me, the staff or the other residents when I am there, however, Macie started going up to them and they would extend their hands and pet her. After a bit, they started talking to her. It is amazing to see this take place and how a dog can make such a huge impact on a person. I don’t know if she loves them more or if they love her more. Either way I see it as a win/win and Macie loves making new friends and regularly visiting old friends.”

We can’t stop smiling with the recent news of Rocco & Remmy’s adoption!

One of our volunteers involved with their rescue in December shared this story:

“Today was another GRRoM success that is only possible because of the fantastic teamwork that is part of the organization spirit and culture.
You have likely seen the postings about two 5-year-old brothers whose owner recently passed away. There is more to the back story that needs to be shared. The dogs’ names are Rocco and Remmy and they lived on a farm in Burr Oak, MI which is south of Kalamazoo.
The time window from GRRoM being notified of the surrender (November 28) and finding a foster family was very tight. GRRoM found a foster home on November 30 however the foster family was on vacation. One member of the owner’s family became impatient and brought Rocco and Remmy to the Saint Joseph Animal Control Center in Centreville MI on Saturday December 2.
On Sunday December 3, the plans were put in place to pick up Rocco and Remmy on December 4 as soon as Animal Control opened and transport both to the foster family on the same day. GRRoM can’t thank St Joseph Animal Control (Officer Bingaman) enough for cooperating and bending some rules to release R&R to the transporter. Clearly her priority was finding a forever loving home for both boys. It was also emotional to see an inmate of the St Joseph jail playing with Rocco and Remmy in the dog exercise area. I’m not sure who was having the most fun.
During the ride from St Joseph Animal Control to Jackson, Rocco and Remmy were comforting each other by licking each other’s face. The love and affection they showed one another was touching. It was also an indication that they should not be separated. In the last 30 minutes of the ride to Jackson both dogs fell asleep. That might be partially due to Christmas music being played.
The meeting of transporters in Jackson went like clockwork. When one of the dogs jumped in Al Lengeman’s car for the transport to the foster home, the other was right behind. They were not going to leave their brother behind.”

⛳️ 🐕 ❤️ Birdies for Brandon Golf Outing ❤️ 🐕 ⛳️

The Birdies 4 Brandon Golf Outing is an annual fundraiser dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of Brandon Nieporte, a remarkable individual who touched many lives. Before his passing in July 2022, Brandon was not only a beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend but also a passionate sports enthusiast and advocate for animal welfare.

This golf outing reflects Brandon’s love for bringing people together, his passion for sports, and his commitment to helping abandoned animals in the community. Each year, a deserving rescue organization is chosen to receive the funds raised in his memory.

This year, GRRoM is deeply honored to be the recipient of this generous support. We learned that Brandon had a special place in his heart for Golden Retrievers, having grown up with them, which inspired the selection of GRRoM for this year’s event.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Brandon’s parents, Dean Nieporte and Kathleen Smith, as well as to Konnor Chupp for hosting this meaningful event. We also send a heavenly thank you to Brandon, hoping to make him proud by using the funds raised in his honor to rescue, rehabilitate, provide medical care, and find loving homes for the dogs he cared about so deeply.

The Golf Outing is on August 17th at Goodrich Country Club.

Champ needs our help!

We posted about Champ earlier this summer when he was first brought into our rescue. Champ had recently been diagnosed with sudden onset blindness due to glaucoma, when, due to a loss of housing, he was owner surrendered to us in June.

As always, our volunteers sprung into action and with just a few hours of notification, he was picked up and brought to his fosters home. This loving, 95 pound boy didn’t just lose his sight, he lost his family.

We quickly followed up with his medical care to alleviate any pain his eye pressures were causing. Although we hoped his condition could be managed, his ophthalmologist considers occular removal his best option. His surgery will cost an estimated $4,200 and will occur on Tuesday, August 20.

Champ is doing a fabulous job adjusting to the layout of his new home. He quickly bonded with his foster family, and wants nothing more than cuddles, love and some good treats. Taking walks remains a favorite activity, and although he can’t chase them anymore, he still loves to hold a tennis ball. Champ has faced many challenges in a very short time, and yet his heart stays Golden strong.

We hope you will consider donating to his medical fund. Help us, help him. The link to donate to Champ: https://www.grrom.com/golden-archives/champs-fight-against-glaucoma

Alright team!

The job isn’t done. Sally (formally Blondie) was picked up with her pit bull companion who still needs help!

This guy is being held at StreetHearts Animal Rescue in Burton, MI. Due to their lack of space, he is in a crate in a barn with fans but no AC. He needs our help too!

As you can see, his skin is in rough shape and he is very thin. Due to the appearance of his nails, we think he has lived most of his life in a crate. Regardless of all of that, he is the sweetest guy and deserves better than what he has had!

We know we are all Golden lovers here, but we love all dogs and want to help out Sally’s friend. Do you know someone who can see past the rough exterior to the heart of Gold beneath?!

We wanted to update everyone on Sally (known as Blondie when she was picked up!)

For anyone who missed it, “Blondie Streetheart” was picked up from the road at 3:00 AM on the morning of Thursday, August 1st, 2024, near Flint MI. She was laying in the street with her pit bull friend. The police picked up both dogs and took them to Streetheart rescue who didn’t have space for her. The nearby animal control wasn’t taking dogs because they have an outbreak of parvo.

This cute, sweet girl was teaming with fleas and has probably never had her nails trimmed. She also had a horrible ear infection and had probably been exposed to mange, since the pit bull showed signs of mange. Streetheart rescue treated her with cap star and flea spray to control the fleas. As they didn’t have space for her, she was put in a crate in a barn with fans but no AC.

We knew we had to act quickly, and quickly we did! As soon as GRRoM was contacted by Streetheart, we went into action calling upon our registered foster families as well as putting a plea out on social media for someone to bring her home ASAP. The outpouring of support was overwhelming, and we quickly identified a foster home who is planning to adopt Sally once GRRoM has covered her medical expenses to get her into tip top shape.

We appreciate any and all donations towards Sally’s care. She is a happy girl considering everything she has been through and the poor shape she was in when she was found.

We are so excited to see her flourish in a life of luxury!

We did it!

From being found on the road in Flint, MI at 3am to being placed with a foster home less than 12 hours later - fleas and all!

Thank you thank you thank you to the outpouring of willingness to help! Blondie will be with her new foster family TODAY! We had such a fast response and so many people willing to open up their homes and hearts to this girl.

Y’all are really the best and we appreciate each and everyone one of you!

PS: Everyone on our foster list gets emailed when we have a dog surrendered to our rescue. This is how we are able to so quickly get these dogs into homes. We have been getting so many dogs into our rescue, that we have really had to lean hard into our volunteers. We are always looking for more people willing and able! So if this story spoke to you and you wanted to help, please consider applying to foster!

Meet Indie! Born 6/4/2021

Indie is a beautiful 52 lb. sweetheart who was surrendered because her owner could no longer care for her. She has an easygoing temperament and loves all people. She will greet you with a wiggle that you’ll just have to see to believe! Indie gets along with cats and dogs. Her previous owner said she was around kids as young as 5 so GRRoM recommends kids be at least 5, preferably older, since interactions have not been observed. Indie is food motivated and will eat her food and everyone else’s if she thinks no one is watching. However, she listens well and understands “no”. She loves to ride in the car and be outside. She walks easily on a leash and comes when called but would benefit from positive reinforcement obedience training. A physical fence is not required. Other forms of containment would likely be acceptable. She isn’t much interested in playing with her foster family’s dog but does get along with him and follows him wherever he goes. She is learning to fetch but mostly wants to just hang out by your side with a toy or two. Indie is a super sweet dog who will make a great companion for a novice or experienced dog owner.

To celebrate this sweet girl, and keep her pain free, we are asking for the generosity of our donors. Wouldn’t it be amazing to raise $1400 to celebrate such a momentous occasion though?!

Read more about Sophie from her foster mom:

Sophie came to GRRoM when her family felt they could no longer give her the life she deserved. And Sophie is indeed now living her life to its fullest. After spending her birthday romping in the backyard with her favorite companions, Alan and Apple (also a GRRoM rescue), she took a well deserved nap.

Sophie came to GRRoM at 12 years of age in August 2023. Within a few days, she was given a permanent foster home. Sophie received a thorough vet check and given medication to meet her needs. GRRoM paid for all of her veterinary care and medications. One year later, a routine vet check revealed Sophie was suffering from anemia, likely caused by pre-existing re**al mass that was bleeding. After consulting with the vet, it was decided that Sophie would have the growth removed as well as badly needed dental work. Again, GRRoM paid for all of Sophie’s veterinary care. She not only recovered from the surgery, but thrived.

Fast forward to July 2024. Sophie was still playful, bubbly and social but her foster parents noticed she had a foul breath. A vet appointment was scheduled in which the vet discovered two abscess teeth and a growth, possibly cancerous.

Once again, GRRoM funded the surgery, biopsy and all of Sophie’s medication. All of the volunteers that make GRRoM function as a well oiled machine eagerly await Miss Sophies’s results.

Adopted!

Meet Captain America, born 4/7/23

Weighing in at a whopping 35 lbs. this sweet boy is much more of a Steve Rogers than his alter ego Captain America. He currently responds well to “Cappy”. He was surrendered to GRRoM because his family could no longer care for him. He is a happy boy, loves everyone he meets, listens well and longs to give love and be loved in return. He knows how to sit and has decent recall. He needs some work on a leash. He has played well with the resident dogs at his foster home and every other dog he has met while in their care. He was seen getting love from the resident cat. Cappy loves children and can go to a house with children 2 and older. He is a laid-back guy who is just as happy cuddling as he is going for a run. He likes to play fetch and chew on sticks. He does have some puppy tendencies and can be mouthy in the gentle puppy fashion. He sleeps well in a crate at night but has anxiety when being left home alone during the day. He also really likes to drink water which then makes him urinate frequently. After being evaluated for this, turns out he just likes to drink and there are no medical issues. He rides well in a car. He doesn’t require a physical fence; other forms of containment will likely be acceptable. Obedience training is encouraged but not required.

Just another day in the life of rescue!

We had SIX Goldens surrendered to our rescue over the weekend. The numbers we are seeing are huge. As of our board meeting this week, we have taken in 52 dogs in 2024.

🐕 That’s a whole lot of Goldens who we rely on our volunteers to open up their home for fostering until the Golden is ready for adoption.
🐕 It’s also a tremendous financial challenge that we meet every time thanks to the generous donations we receive. Many of the Goldens who come in are not up to date on vaccines or heart worm preventative. Some haven’t been to a veterinarian in years. They come in with tooth decay, allergies, or other major health issues (like Flynn and Champ!). Part of getting them ready for adoption is to get their health assessed and optimized.

So thank you all for your support in what we do! We graciously ask for your continued to support by sharing our rescue, applying to adopt or foster, and donating! You are so appreciated!!!

Congratulations Murphy!

Murphy just graduated with his level 1 and will be starting Canine Good Citizen Training next month.

He will be a CAC volunteer and a registered therapy dog. What an amazing boy!

Murphy was one of the 4 puppies surrendered in December 2023 due to a skin condition called ichthyosis. He is absolutely thriving!!
